What promise would you make my character as they were dying in your arms?

Her breath rattled, caught in her throat, threatened to choke her with each passing second, cheeks slick with tears she’d thought pointless to wipe away, hands stained with blood.

So much blood.

Arms ache as she bends at the waist, at the knee, careful not to drop him as they sink to the ground. Her hands move uncertainly to his wound once more, thinking that maybe, just maybe, if she can stop the bleeding, he can be alright, she can keep him here, with her. It’s foolish, she knows it’s foolish; gods, his blood is on the floors, in his clothes, and she’s never been a healer. They are destruction, they are endings. She is death, not life.

"Fenrir." But as she speaks, she’s suffocating, trying to swallow whatever’s stuck in the back of her throat, each attempt to breathe through her nose proving futile. He can’t die (he can’t die), not when they have so much left to do. If he dies now, his entire existence was for naught, years wasted planning, waiting, for their chance at revenge, to be able to hurt those who’d hurt them. 

If he dies now, he won’t see any of it.

She pushes the his hair back from his forehead, smiling despite the tears. Hela owes him this, now, after all the years he’d spent looking after her. She can be strong, for him, just this once, as strong as she can be, even though it feels like her bones have shattered within her, her heart shorn in half. “I swear to you, I will see to it that those who’ve harmed us will suffer for it.” And she hates this feeling, this helplessness; there is nothing she can do to stop him from leaving her, there is nothing she can do to bring him back. “You will get what you’ve been owed.”

Earth is full. Go home.

He still retained his golden colour, yet it was draining from the flesh slowly, just as salt might eat away at bark and leave it's silver mark. What once was living, proud and mighty, would be nothing more than bleached bones and a paler soul and, even now, the god could feel the cold light of the stars fade from his view.

He knew this moment, had accepted it and waited for it for a lifetime. He met with death as he would any stranger, with a calm courtesy even in this darkened place.
