How to cast your runes for a reading.
The first thing that is important is storage, typically people (like myself) store their runes in a cloth bag. Glass and wood prevent energy from flowing in and out of the runes. And a bag allows you to pull one rune out at a time, allowing you to keep easier track of them.
Once you’ve figured out storage there are just a few things you’ll need, but not all are necessary.
- a casting cloth. These are typically a white cloth that is large enough for you to cast your runes onto. It’s especially helpful if you do castings outside so that you don’t lose anything.
-rune stones or cards. this is all really your preference, you can make your own set with stones and paint, or out of cardstock, or you can purchase them online. I personally have three sets, one that I inherited, one that I made by hand, and a third set made from lapis lazuli that I purchased online.
-a notebook and pen (optional) to keep a record of which runes you pulled and in what position. I find it helpful because then I can also write out their meanings next to them and get an overall feel for the casting.
-rune reference guide (also optional) sometimes it’s helpful to have a reference for their meanings if you haven’t gotten them memorized or if you want to double-check.
After you’ve gathered your supplies you’re ready to begin. I find it’s helpful to have a calm atmosphere. Push all other thoughts from your mind other than the question you have for the runes.
Begin to “shuffle” the runes while focusing on your questions. This is where it’s also more beneficial when using actual stones, to have a bag instead of a box.
When you feel as if you’re ready to begin pulling stones, stop shuffling and open your bag or box. Here you can either gently toss your runes onto your cloth or other surface and choose the ones that are face up. Or you can reach into the bag or box while obscuring your vision and pull out however many runes you need for the castings.
Place the runes in order of when you touched them according to whatever formation that you used. My personal favorite is the Bifrost spread.
Casting is complete, don’t forget to reunite your runes and store them safely.
