R.A.P. Ferreira & Fumitake Tamura - begonias (ft. Hprizm)
Asiatic by Hprizm from the album Catching a Body
Sélébéyone
Today Senegal celebrates its independence day, which seems as good a time as any to revisit Sélébéyone – one of last year’s most interesting albums.
A collaborative project led by acclaimed saxophonist Steve Lehman, the record is an uncompromising collision between jazz and hip-hop that sees Senegalese rapper Gaston Bandimic and Antipop Consortium’s HPrizm trading rhymes in Wolof and English respectively. Other guests include French soprano saxophonist Maciek Lasserre, keyboardist Carlos Homs, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Damion Reid.
With such a range of musical and linguistic languages on show, you could forgive Sélébéyone for being a slightly messy affair. Yet while it revels in its unashamed complexity, the result is a record of aggressively focused dynamism where sparks fly in all directions. Check out ‘Are You In Peace?’, one of several stand-out tracks, and buy/download a copy from Pi Recordings here.
