“Nee-san!”
“I’ve asked you numerous times to stop calling me that.”
It’s a habit you won’t be able to break. “Not you too.”
“What? It’s a legitimate question.” Miwa flips through her wedding magazine.
Did you plan your wedding flowers yet?
Aside from… When’s the wedding? It’s what everyone’s asking these days. Who’s footing the bill? Both sets of parents are offering to pay for this or that, trying to outdo the other.
You’re grateful, you really are. There’s friends, acquaintances, and colleagues where one set of parents refuse to pay for anything and the other set of parents hold a grudge against them. Some are on their own due to both sets of parents not wanting to help out. Others choose to foot the entire thing themselves.
It’s what you’re leaning towards to some extent. You’re not looking to be a part of the wedding of the century. To save everyone the trouble, you tell them not to worry about it. Take the pressure off your parents and not give them the opportunity to hold it over your head. You don’t know what they have in mind or what they’re planning to do. Better yet, if you’ll even be on board.
As much as you hate to be selfish, the day belongs to you and him.
You toss the magazine back on the table.
She brought over a bunch for inspiration, but you suddenly lost interest.
Miwa watches as the magazine flies over and lands on the floor. “You know my brother won’t do any of the planning. It's all up to you.”
It’s a fact he’ll go along with what you decide. There’s only so much you can do though. You hope he does what he needs to for his part and gives input to things you need help on.
Wait until he finds out why she’s over.
Something small with family and friends. Who else do you need to invite?
“I do suggest hiring a wedding planner though. They’ll take care of everything for you. I know you want to do this all by yourself, but it will drive you crazy,” Miwa suggests. “I don’t know how far you’ve gotten or if you’ve even started. I’ll text you a few recommendations. Oh, don’t forget to drag Tobio along with you.”
You throw your head back on the sofa and close your eyes. The headache it’s causing you. She’s right. You need to find someone. Planning a wedding is a skill set you don’t have, not when you’re working a full-time job.
Why are they both always right? Miwa is at least. Tobio… He assumes he is in most situations when in reality he isn’t. He’s lucky you let him off the hook easily.
Miwa holds up a spread of different headpieces. She looks at you then back at the magazine. “You should wear a tiara.”
“I haven’t thought much about the whole thing.” A headpiece possibly. Comb or clips. Who wears tiaras nowadays?
“They look nice.”
On royalty.
She holds up another spread to show you, but you shake your head without even looking at it. “It’s not for me.”
“I think you deserve to wear one since you’re marrying my brother.”
“Oh, that’s a good one,” you smile to yourself, listening to Miwa drone on and on about hair styles. “Is he going to wear a crown?”
Not a single word you say makes it to her ears. “Ask him and see what he says.”
“I’m not asking him.”
“Have you tried one on before?”
You haven’t, but why would you?
“I’ll find one for you.” The sound of pages being flipped through filled the room. “You can create an heirloom out of it. Pass it onto your kids…”
What? Kids? Why does she sound like your mother?
A quick nap will help. You fluff the throw pillow next to you and change positions. “Nee-san, wake me up when he’s ho-”
Unfortunately, the doorbell interrupts your plans.
You flop face down onto the sofa.
“Are you going to answer it?”
“No,” you mumble into the cushions.
“You’re off the hook. I need to stretch my legs or else I’d scold you for making a pregnant woman get up.”
It is inconsiderate, but you’re dead tired from work.
Without another word, Miwa gets up from her chair. On the way, she swats the back of your legs with the magazine. “You’re just like my brother.”
“Sorry.” Your body relaxes further as you start to drift off.
A few seconds later, she returns, swatting you on the legs again jolting you awake. “It’s for you. I don’t know if you want to see them or not."
“Why didn’t you-”
The doorbell rings again, yet you don’t move an inch. Maybe they will go away, whoever it is. It’s either scammers or annoying salespeople. You aren’t expecting any other visitors. Pretend no one’s home.
“Nee-san, could you shoo them away please?”
Miwa doesn’t budge. “It’s your place.”
The third ringing rattles you. If it’s a neighbor or delivery man, it’s obvious by now no one’s home. They can wait until someone’s home or drop it off at the front desk.
You roll over and cover your face with the pillow, hiding the groan you let out.
The doorbell rings a fourth time.
“Oh my… AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGH!” You scream away into the pillow.
They can wait a few more seconds.
The ringing turns into incessant knocking at the door.
“Are you kidding me?!” You sit up angrily. If they’re going to be this persistent, they’ll get a piece of your mind. You stomp by to answer the pest at the door.
Miwa peers at you over the top of the magazine. “Be nice.”
You don’t bother checking who it is and whip open the door. “ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT? I’LL KILL-”
Tobio is standing there all flustered with one arm behind his back.
“I’m… I…” The words die at the tip of your tongue as your cheeks flush hot with blood. The truth is you’re very grouchy when the sleep you’re trying to get is cut short. It’s something you need to work on.
“You’re what? Going to kill me?” His eyes sparkle as his mouth breaks into a smile. “I’d like to see you try.”
“Try this.” You slam the door shut in his face. Expecting it to open from his end any minute, but nothing happens. When there’s no sound or movement coming from the other side, you open the door again. “What are you… Why’d you ring the doorbell? Did you forget your keys?”
He must have his keys if he’s home unless someone dropped him off.
“Phone?”
He shuffles his feet, clearing his throat. “Were you not going to answer the door?”
“Uh…” You weren’t, stepping to the side to let him in. “No.”
Tobio doesn’t move and looks as if he wants to disappear into thin air.
“Are you not coming in?” This is his place. Why is he treating it like it’s not his home?
The tips of his ears are as red as tomatoes as he stares at the floor.
“What is behind your back?” You reach out to tug on his arm, but he steps away from you.
You don’t have time for this. “Wake me up when you’re done playing around.”
It’s when you’re about to close the door again he finally holds out what he’s hiding.
In his hand is a huge bouquet of all sorts of flowers. The red from the roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, and gerberas add a pop of color to the whole bunch with a splash of pink from daisies and lilies. A little bit of eye-catching yellow from daisies and gerberas here and there. A mix of red, pink, and purple tulips scatter throughout. The remaining specs of white are from stems of baby’s breath and dahlias.
A good chunk of time spent at the florist and they’re nice enough to accommodate his request. As if what he’s doing wouldn’t draw a crowd already. He attracted one when he left the shop to go to his car. Pairs of eyes from outsiders and the occupants in his building followed him. He’s pretty sure neighbors would’ve poked their heads out of their doors if they knew.
If there’s no limit on what the size of the bouquet could be, there would be a flower for every time he thought about you.
“Wha…” You’re so surprised to see the ginormous bouquet that you're at a loss for words. One single stem would’ve been enough. “Who put you up to this? It’s not for-”
“It’s for you.” He watches as you back away from the door.
“We’re beyond that point.”
“I can’t get you flowers?” He steps inside towards you and closes the door, reaching for you before you run away, to place the bouquet into the crook of your arm. There’s nowhere you can run except out past him, but you don’t even have your shoes on.
“You’re acting all weird.” Rewind time back to when the two of you started dating. You’ve come so far and for him to make things awkward again because the status of the relationship changed. “If you can’t act like your normal self around me, I don’t want them.”
There’s parts of him you don’t want him to change ever. As for his bad habits, he’s almost rid of it. There’s nothing he can do to mess anything up or to get rid of you. If he does the unthinkable, he won’t live to see the next day.
Then you’ll leave him.
Maybe.
“I don’t want you-”
“-to change for me,” he finishes. “I’m trying. I don’t want to mess it up.”
After you place the bouquet down on the table, with your heart pounding you push him against the wall and kiss him.
His hand drifts down your back, pressing you even closer to him. Every time you try to pull away, he pins you against him.
You slide your hands down his chest pushing away from him, whispering, “Your sister’s here.”
Tobio tugs you to him and kisses your forehead. “Let me hold you.”
“Can’t-“
The sound of footsteps grows closer.
“Tobio!”
He looks up at his sister. “Nee-san.”
Miwa beams when sees the bouquet. “I see you took my advice and got a few of each flower. Now y/n can pick out her favorites.”
“Nee-san, I didn’t get the ping pong flower.” He looks down, locking eyes with you, hoping you know what he’s referring to.
You do.
They’re supposed to look like pom-poms, at least before you ripped them apart. The last time you caught a bouquet, you plucked all the petals into a pile, out of boredom, blew and dumped them all over him.
He’s avoiding them at all costs. It’s not what he wants to go through again, finding petals in his hair and clothes. If you get your hands on one at home, you’ll either toss it at him or rip them apart again…
She waves it off. “It’s fine. I’m sure y/n knows what they are.”
Wait a minute.
Sister… and… brother…
Before you can break free to check the bouquet for said flower, he forcefully hugs you even more tightly. “You wanted me to be myself.”
“The two of you were in on this!”
