There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

I fell out of love with historical romance. It was just a short amount of time where I was reading the same few authors who seemed to be telling the same story over and over.  Literally. When you read romance you expect a very specific ending. You expect it to be happy and end in marriage and little Duke’s and Duchesses. But, if you have a great writer, the way happily ever after comes to be should be unique and surprise you.

When I read the Bridgerton series a few years ago, I fell back in love with Historical Romance and head over heels in love with Julia Quinn. With that one series you have humor, and romance and twists that even the most jaded of  readers often didn’t see coming. (By jaded reader I mean, me of course). The Bridgerton’s made me laugh, they made me cry and they made me believe in love...over and over again.

I’m a big fan of Quinn’s other series, I mean we all know how I felt about The Sum of All Kisses, but there is just something about the Bridgerton’s. They are good Ton and yet they marry for love and have these twisty, turny, scandalous relationships all with their proud Mama at the helm. So, when I heard that Ms. Quinn was returning to the Bridgerton family, even if it’s a generation before our beloved siblings, I was through the roof with happiness.

Because of Miss Bridgerton is everything I love about a Julia Quinn novel. It has a fun heroine who you root for no matter what, a misunderstood Hero who is handsome, rich, loyal and has deeper layers that he rarely shows to the world. It’s filled with hijinks, supporting characters you love so much you can’t wait to read their books and of course a love story to die for.

I love Pride & Prejudice type stories. Where the hero and the heroine kind of hate each other at the start. Like Mr. Darcy and his Lizzie, Billie and George completely misunderstand each other. But, unlike Austen’s famous couple, they have been misunderstanding each other for all of their lives. Billie always knew that she would marry a Rokesby brother, but it never occurred to her to even look at George, the oldest brother with the title, because he always seemed so closed off, so pompous, so above it all. Little does she know that behind all that sour layering, is a loyal, caring and loving man. 

I found their romance to be adorable, funny and heartfelt. When they realize what is probably happening inside them, between them, they do everything in their abilities to avoid it, but the heart wants what it wants.

I really enjoyed the book. Its got a lot of heart and emotion. Julia Quinn has a way of showing how someone who seems to have it all, can be on the outside. How it feels to be an outsider in a world that you were born to conquer. 

I really liked the coming together of both characters and what’s revealed and peeled away as these two characters fall in love.

Then why 3.5 instead of 5 stars? It just isn’t Ms. Quinn’s best. She has written better and she will write better again. It’s a great book, but not to her usual hilarious, romantic standards. Still a must read.

Side note: Edmund Bridgerton aka the father of the Bridgterton siblings is just a kid in this book. He’s not in the book, but is referenced as being at Eton with one of the younger Rokesby brothers. I really, really hope that when the youngest boy finds love we’ll get a peak of Edmund meeting and falling in love with Lady Violet. :-)

Recommended for fans of Historical Romance and anyone who has been waiting to start a new series. I hope you join me in reading about the Rokesby clan!
