“Princess, I understand you’ve travelled a long way from Corona.” Eugene bit his lip, trying to recall just how much distance lay between the kingdom on the water and his.. his kingdom. He vaguely recalled his father telling him he could never abandon guarding the Moonstone, and all interest he had in knowing about geography and far off lands he would never see evaporated.

“But surely - my family has safeguarded this opal for generations. And if there was ever a chance, or a method in safely removing it, we’ve had no luck in finding it. And you say that you can?”

He was sceptical. And hopeful.

“Your Highness.” He offered a formal bow, practised mostly over the last day and coming off stiffer than perhaps was necessary. But there was no doubt in his mind that Corona’s Rapunzel was not only a guest, but socially much higher than him. She was the heiress to a powerful kingdom, with traditions and resources and infrastructure.

He was the Crown Prince of dusty, decayed ruins, with a legacy of guarding what may-or-may-not be a devastating relic.

“On behalf of my father, King Edmund, I wish to welcome you to... what’s left of our kingdom.”

A faux pas from the beginning, but he couldn’t help it. She was disarmingly approachable.
