@denmarks whispered : how did you sleep?
Mina has the uncanny ability, Jonathan swears, of being able to sleep pretty much anywhere. It does not matter how cold or damp or uncomfortable a makeshift mattress she has to endure is, she will make do and sleep will eventually find her. Old habits die hard, she has told Jon ( orphanage beds are anything but pleasant to lie in ), and despite the humid and chilly atmosphere of the castle and the torches casting a rather macabre glow upon the stone walls of her bedroom, she has found sleep pretty quickly.
The man finds her staring through the window that leads to a peculiarly somber garden, ( the castle reeks of old, ghostly tales, it brings an uneasiness to her body she cannot explain ), and once he speaks up, voice deep and serene, Mina almost jumps back on her heels – she’s on edge; it shows. Jonathan has insisted they sleep in separate bedrooms ( his excessive chivalry is bothersome to Mina sometimes, much more in situations like this ), thus, she found herself, last night, rather swallowed by the enormity of the room with the stone walls and four poster bed that was covered in a thin layer of dust, as if it had not been slept on for quite some time.
“ oh, I – I have slept well. thank you, ” a polite curtsy is offered to the royal, and Mina leaves her fingers curled still around the fabric of her skirts ( as if she needed something to grasp in order to steady herself ), “ has jonathan awakened already? he is an early riser if i’ve ever seen one,” Mina, on the other hand, does not pride herself of being a morning person, “ I suppose you two have still much to discuss regarding the selling of these lands. ”
mina and jon really are like the vampire slayer version of movie verse ed and lorraine w*rren in this essay i will -

how did you sleep? ( @hlmwood )
There is no sleeping – she wants to say – only nightmares. Only terrifying, foreboding images of what’s to come. Of Jonathan and you and Mr. Morris and Dr. Van Helsing being devoured by darkness and the beast himself – blood, so much blood, drip, drip, dripping from the jaws of a familiar monster.
She sees herself as the monster, and that is by far the most terrifying vision of them all.
Still, Mina does not bring herself to share her worries with Mr. Holmwood ( he has, indeed, his own Hell to deal with, they both share the grief over the loss of a loved one. They both mourn Lucy, and they both always will ), and for that reason, she forces a small attempt at a smile, tucks a stray lock behind her ear – these are not times to seek comfort, these are not times to falter ( Mina carries her own burdens on her shoulders, endures silently, just as women have always done and just as she hopes women will never do again ).
still, the monster lurks in the shadows, and in every sunrise that her skin grows paler, her eyes darker, her features more angular, Mina fears of what will become of herself.
“ I doubt any of us has had the chance to have a particularly pleasant night of sleep lately, if i’m to be quite frank, ” voice sounds exhausted, dark circles mark her eyes – yet Mina still smiles, “ however, I appreciate the attempt at banal chitchat, mr. holmwood. I truly … I find myself truly missing it. ”

a land of permanent goodbyes taken from the 2018 atia abawi book.
it’s my job to worry about you.
make sure you find a good jacket to stay warm.
you don’t have a fever, do you?
you’re going to be fine. i just need to bandage up your head.
but when your soul feels too much, that trauma makes a home in your heart.
we have a big day today.
how did you sleep?
it will make you feel better.
every face had a story, a family, a struggle.
it’s the power of compassion and love – the two elements that can save a world.
when you lose someone or even something you love, you never feel complete again.
stop looking for reasons to make yourself sad.
when you truly love someone, their life means more to you than your own.
i’m your only son, your only child. i can’t leave you.
to feel so much means you can find empathy – when you can sense the pain of others, that is a power to hold on to. that is a power that can change the world you live in.
beep beep how’s my portrayal ?
“ childhood innocence is overrated . ” ( @forseit )
A civil conversation with a vampire is far from being something Mina considers usual in her life at this point – which is, in itself, a quaint notion, what is deemed normal becomes twisted with perspective ( nothing is as it seems in this world ). perhaps, there’s less of a feeling of uneasiness around this woman than it should – Mina cannot tell if it’s one of their enigmatic ‘gifts’, or simply the natural ability of a predator to entice their meals into their vicinity without them even noticing. many a vampire she and Johnathan have faced has had the same allure, but never have one made her feel as if she were talking to an equal.
This woman, petite and nonthreatening, looks far from being a bloodthirsty monster – and perhaps that might be the reason why she fits so well in the world around her. And as she speaks, ethereal and bell – chiming voice rings past painted lips, Mina studies her as much as she can, tries to decipher whether or not this vampire and her family represent a threat ( their eyes are speak of humane thoughts towards Mina’s kind, abstaining from consuming human blood altogether ).
however, Mina has learned to never trust a wolf that wears the sheep’s skin so effortlessly.
“ personally, I think everything can be overrated if analyzed too much, ” brunette shrugs, brings mug of coffee to her lips as her fingertips travel through pages of books and documents she’s supposed to study for tomorrow’s lecture – caffeine keeps her awake, the vampire’s presence keeps her alert, “ I believe innocence is a matter of perspective – all children are innocent until the vile ways of the world are inculcated onto them. so, in theory, the ones to blame for childhood innocence being such a precious concept are ourselves – because we tend to ruin it. ”
