Title: Eternal Summer  Square and prompt: C2 “Is your dream more important than me?” Rating: M WC: 570. Major tags: Harringrove, angst, non-explicit smut, Incubus!Billy, age gap, no upside down au, dark-ish ending which is also a happy ever after, slightly soft harringrove.

and @harringrovemicroficandart 4 prompts, fingers/slipping through my fingers by ABBA, mention of Jim Hopper. WC: 570.

Summary: Billy's nature enslaved him into killing pretty things. Then Steve happened.

“What are you thinking about?” asked Steve, rolling over on the pillows beside Billy.

Billy couldn’t look Steve in the eye. “Just some dream.” 

“You look pretty pissed about it.”

Billy sat up, swung his legs over the side of the bed. “It made me think. Listen, I’ve gotta—"

“Is your dream more important than me?” Steve’s voice cracked. “Last night you said… Look, if you were shitting me… C’mon, be honest!” 

“Jesus, you’re needy! Yeah! I meant it. I love you.” Billy scrubbed his face wearily. “Got lost in dreams about you.”

“Oh. Why the sad-face… Crap!”

Billy jumped Steve, pinning him on his back, wrists secured either side of his head. Steve giggled, and Billy melted. God, Billy was two millennia old! The heat must’ve gone to his head to make him feel like a real dumb teen.

“What happened in that dream?” 

I made you mine forever. “You accuse me of talking too much?”

Billy silenced Steve with a searing kiss, enjoying Steve’s struggles, as he moaned, desperate, into Billy’s throat. He knew it confused Steve—how Billy was always stronger. When Billy pinned him, he could never fight free.

The kiss grew rough, bruising. Billy sensed the delicious tingle of Steve’s lifeforce ebbing from him. Tears pressed in Billy’s eyes:

I figured you were a bully. I meant to fuck you all summer, then disappear, leaving Hopper scratching his head over a dead teen, like a hundred lawmen before. Then I watched you ditch your friends to look after a bunch of nerdy kids. You begged for love, and I got weak. Now I dream of keeping you always as you are right now—a freeze-frame saved from the crazy tricks of time.

“Fuck me,” gasped Steve, interlacing his fingers with Billy’s, clinging.

“Gotta go.” I stay, you’re gonna get sick and die, or else I’m gonna have to… 

Steve pouted. Christ, he was such a kid! Billy unthreaded their fingers, letting Steve’s hand drop like a stone.

Later, Billy loaded up the Camaro. A BMW tore up and Steve jumped out: “You weren’t even gonna say goodbye?”

I should’ve hauled ass quicker.

“YOU SAID YOU LOVED ME!” Steve grabbed Billy’s collar, got right in his face. 

Billy shoved him away: “Dumbest mistake I ever made.”

In a flash of golden light, Billy revealed his true demon form. Steve staggered back, covering his face then peeping between his fingers:

“Holy shit! Are you an angel?” 

Billy reinstated his glamor, wondering what Steve had seen. Poor pretty fool must genuinely love him back. Only love played crazier tricks than time. 

Laughing, Billy took his trembling prey in his arms: “I’m a demon, Steve. An Incubus. If I stay, I’ll slowly suck”—literally fuck —”your life from you.”

“Wha—” Steve took a beat, frowned: “Is that like a vampire? You could turn me too, right?”

“Doesn’t work quite like that. I could make you my thrall.”

“Wha… I don’t know what that is.”

That night, Billy spread Steve out on the bed beneath him. “You’re sure?”

“Yeah.” Steve’s voice was tight. “You’re gonna fuck me all night, and then… Jesus, will it hurt?”

“No.” Billy trailed his fingers down the curve Steve’s throat, over his quivering lifeblood. Then spiralling down his spine, lower, deeper, relishing Steve’s throaty growls, the little trembles beneath his skin.

No slipping from my grasp now.

For the first time ever, Billy was gonna actually make love.

Summary:

Billy has a run in with Karen Wheeler when he drops off Roscoe at Rosie's grandparents' for the weekend and he is not okay. Of course, Steve can immediately tell something is wrong.

“Do you really think I’ll be allowed to swim, Uncle Billy?”

“I asked Steve, my love, and he said you should definitely bring your swimsuit.”

“But what if Rosie’s grandma Karen says the pool is too cold?”

Billy tried to not let his frustration seep into his voice when he answered Roscoe’s questions for the seventh time. He knew it was because she was nervous. Rosie’s grandparents on her mom’s side were having a flashy end-of-summer BBQ party and Rosie had invited Roscoe for the weekend. 

From what Steve had told him, Rosie’s mom and her new partner were going to be there, and Rosie was a bit apprehensive. She hadn’t seen her mom in a while so she’d asked her best friend to come along. Max had been called into work so it had fallen on Billy to deliver the anxious little girl to a gated community in La Jolla.

Billy listened to the directions the guard at the gate gave him, congratulating himself on deciding to drive his new Camaro that day instead of his 1979 classic Z28. The houses they drove past all looked like they cost a couple of times what Billy made as a yearly salary and he earned a respectable living.

Roscoe held his hand from the car to the Wheelers’ front door and Billy picked her up in his arms to give her a pep talk before he rang the bell.

“Now, listen, Peanut. You’re going to be just fine. It’s Rosie. She’s your bestest friend and she will make sure you have a good time. You’ve met her mom, haven’t you?”

Roscoe nodded.

“Right, so if anything, and I mean, anything, happens that makes you uncomfortable, you find Rosie’s mom and she’ll ring Steve. Okay?”

“Okay, Uncle Billy.”

“Good girl. Now, ring the bell. I’m sure Rosie can’t wait to see you.”

The doorbell chimes were soon replaced by a screech and the sound of footsteps rushing to the door, which was yanked open a second later.

“Roscoe! You’re here!” Rosie beamed, slightly out of breath. She was wearing a white dress with grass stains at knee level and no shoes.

“Rosalinda Elizabeth Harrington! What have I told you about opening the front door?” a female voice said behind her, coming closer.

“Sorry, Grandma Karen,” Rosie said, not sounding sorry at all.

Billy bit down on a chuckle and put Roscoe down. “Hi, Rosie.”

“Hi, Uncle Billy.”

He turned to his niece. “You’ve got your bag, Peanut?”

“Yes, Uncle Billy.”

“Great. You girls have fun, okay?”

The girls both agreed before saying a quick goodbye and running into the house, hand in hand. Billy’s gaze followed them until they turned a corner then landed on the woman who was waiting in the doorway. She was wearing a figure-hugging gauzy dark red dress, with a low décolletage and capped sleeves, and matching stilettos.

“Hello, I’m Karen Wheeler. Who might you be?” the woman asked—like she hadn’t heard Roscoe and her own granddaughter call him Uncle Billy a minute ago—giving Billy a slow appraising look that made him glad he’d renounced the habit of wearing his shirts mostly unbuttoned once he’d reached his thirties.

She offered her hand and Billy shook it, resisting the urge to wipe his hand on his jeans afterwards. The way she stared at him, raw hunger in her eyes, was making him uneasy.

“William Hargrove, ma’am, Roscoe’s uncle.”

“Call me Karen,” she countered with a giggle that creeped Billy out. “Won’t you come in for a drink, William? Or, better yet, join us for dinner. There’s more than enough food.”

“Sorry, Karen, but I already have plans tonight.”

“Got a hot date, have you?” Karen said with a wink, leaning on the doorframe.

“Something like that,” he replied with a tight grin. No way he was telling her he was planning on spending the entire weekend naked in bed with her former son-in-law.

“Another time, then?”

“Absolutely,” Billy said, lying through his teeth, and not finding it in himself to feel sorry about it. “I better head off. Have a lovely evening.”

Her goodbye followed him down the path to the sidewalk and he got into his car and headed off without looking back. He tried to shake off the uneasy feeling the encounter had left him but was still feeling the after-effects by the time he made it to Steve’s house.

Steve was waiting in the open doorway as soon as Billy got out of his car, and fuck, he was a sight for sore eyes, in his soft yellow jumper and his grey track pants that did a piss poor job to hide his giant dick.

“Hey, stranger, what took you so long?” Steve said, dragging a willing Billy through the threshold with both hands.

Billy kicked the door shut with his foot, before walking Steve backwards to the closest wall and burying his face in Steve’s neck. He inhaled the scent that was vanilla shampoo and something inherently Steve. It calmed his mind, even as his hands came up to grasp Steve’s sides. 

How the fuck was he supposed to give this up when Steve decided he was ready to find someone he was serious about?

“Billy, are you okay?” Steve asked, an uncertain note in his tone when Billy didn’t move.

“I don’t know,” Billy mumbled against Steve’s neck, not letting go of Steve’s jumper.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

With a sigh, Billy leaned back, his fingers loosening their grip. “I dropped Roscoe at your former in-laws and your kid’s grandma tried to get me to stay for a drink, but the way she nearly licked her lips when she looked at me…” Billy couldn’t help the shudder that racked his body. He closed his eyes. “Felt like she was wishing I was on the menu.”

“What the fuck?” Steve wrapped his arms around Billy and pulled him close again. “I’m so sorry, baby.”

Billy bit down a whimper at the pet name Steve had never used before then shrugged. “It’s okay. I just wanna forget about her and enjoy our time together while I can.”

“While you—Billy, what the fuck do you mean?”

“Nothing, don’t worry about it.” 

Fuck. 

Great job, dickhead.

Keeping one arm around Bill’s shoulders, Steve led the both of them to the couch.

“Come here, sit with me.”

Billy let himself drop on the couch, leaning his head back and looking at the ceiling. He was aware of Steve settling next to him, his hand warm on Billy’s thigh. When Steve didn’t say anything, Billy turned his head to look at him, confused when he noticed that Steve was dialing someone’s number on his phone.

The tone was loud in the otherwise quiet room, and Billy wondered who Steve was ringing and why he felt the need to do it on speakerphone.

“Hello, Wheeler residence, this is Karen,” the person on the other side answered and Billy went rigid.

Steve sent him a smile and squeezed his thigh. “Hi, Karen. It’s Steve.”

“Oh, Steve, hi! I really wish you could have joined us tonight. It’s so lovely to see Rosalinda with Nancy.”

“I’m sure it is. Listen, I heard you met Roscoe’s uncle tonight when he dropped her off and—”

“Yes, William, what a charming man. I really wish he’d have stayed for a while. I would love to get to know him. Is he single? I wonder if Nancy knows…”

“Karen, I’m going to stop you right there and remind you that you are a married woman.”

“Oh, Steve, you’re sweet." She laughed, and the sound had Billy tighten his hands into fists, nails digging in his palms. Karen continued, "Ted and I… let’s just say we have an arrangement that keeps both of us happy.”

“Okay, first of all, ew, and second of all, I think it’s quite creepy that you’re setting your sights on men the same age as your eldest daughter.”

Karen laughed. “Age is just a number, Steve. And as long as the participants are willing…”

“Billy is not willing,” Steve said, a steely age in his voice. “And, while I know and respect your place in my daughter’s life, I would appreciate if you’d keep your aging paws off my boyfriend.”

Steve hung up without another word, shutting out the offended stuttering and plunging the room in silence again.

“Boyfriend?” Billy whispered, when the quiet got too much. He felt unable to move a muscle, yet, at the same time, desperate to touch Steve, hope springing free in his chest.

“I, um, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that for a bit now, I’m sorry it’s taken me so long. When you said you wanted to enjoy our time together while you could, I realized I’d fucked up.”

“Steve…” Billy sat up, but Steve stopped him with a hand on his chest.

“Billy, I know we’ve only been seeing each other for a couple of months, but I like you. A lot. And I mean that as in formally-introducing-you-to-Rosie-as-my-boyfriend-and-giving-you-a-spare-key-to-my-house-so-you-can-visit-whenever-you-like kinda like you.” 

“I… I don’t know what to say,” Billy said, trying to wrap his head around the bombshell Steve had just dropped. After his slip up earlier, he’d expected Steve to tell him their arrangement was over, or that Billy was expecting too much. But now…

is it casual now?

prompt: B1 "sitting in the dark"

summary: billy is forced to stick next to steve during a storm.

content warnings: internalized homophobia, angst, mentions of smut, casual by chappel roan inspiration

word count: 1.3k

Not enough light. Not enough space. Too much to say.

That’s all Billy could think of. He didn’t really plan to be stuck in Scoops Ahoy. Especially not with the boy who he considered to have broken his heart. Steve was the last person he wanted to be stuck with. But it’s not like he could just get up and leave. The summer rain was no joke and didn’t look like it was stopping any time soon. So getting into the camaro and driving as far away as possible from this was out of the question. 

Somehow the brunette had convinced Billy to stay with him at the shop. Of course he had feelings for Steve, regardless of the fucked up shit he had done. 

So yes, Billy had agreed to huddle behind the ice cream counter with nothing but a flashlight pointed at the ceiling. At least it gave them some form of light.

“This thing should last us about an hour. We can go from there once it dies.” Steve announced as he took a seat next to Billy.  The blonde distanced himself, scooting over a few inches. Steve sighed out of irritation. It was almost a play by play of the night Steve called things off. Billy knew that they couldn’t be together. Especially not in the middle of nowhere, Indiana.

People just wouldn’t understand.

“Really?” Was all Steve said in response to Billy’s choice of personal space.

“Yes, really.”  Billy said as he continued to do anything but look at the other boy in the face. He couldn’t understand how Steve could be so nonchalant about what happened between them. They shared intimacy together. Billy met Steve’s parents the one time they were actually home, as a friend of course. It still counted to Billy as much as it would’ve been if Steve actually told his parents the truth.

“Yes mom and dad this is Billy. Sometimes I let him Fuck me on your guys’ couch. No big deal.”

In Billy’s mind, it didn’t feel that hard to have to admit. The other half of his mind was telling him the opposite. If he would’ve said something like that Neil, he would’ve gotten a black eye. He somewhat understood. If only that were enough to mend the heartbreak he had felt for the past few months. 

Steve sighed again before speaking once more. “This petty bullshit is dumb Billy. We graduated a month ago and you’re still acting like a little fucking kid. You can’t keep dealing with all your problems by shutting people out.” Steve would say that was one of the main reasons why he cut Billy off. Anytime he got mad and Harrington attempted to talk to him about it, it was impossible to hold a single conversation without Billy lashing out.

Ok, what the fuck do you know? Was all Billy could think of in response. Of course he didn’t say it out loud. Steve didn’t deserve a response in his mind anyway. 

A few moments passed with silence. The striking sound of thunder from the outside made Steve jump up from his slumped position. He hated loud noises. He could barely stand the sound of the engine of Billy’s camaro. 

Hargrove was laughing at the tensing of the brunette’s  body.

“What’s so fuckin’ funny?” Steve asked with frustration.

Billy continued to laugh as he swept some of his mullet out of his face.“There’s no one else in the store so… that only leaves one person left.” 

“Figures you’d only wanna talk to me when it’s to put me down.” Harrington rolled his eyes.

“You did the same shit to me dude. Don’t get mad about it now.” 

Both of the boys were now staring each other in the eyes. Anger filling both pairs. Neither of them planned on backing down from each other. 

The clash of the titans was imminent at this point.

“God you’re so sensitive hargrove.” 

“I'm sensitive? Yeah, ok.”

“Yeah you are.” Steve started up again, riled up. “You’re a crybaby who can’t take rejection, or reality for that matter! We had something casual once. That’s it. It meant nothing.” 

“Me making you cum on yourself isn’t casual Steve.” Billy said in a much calmer tone than the other boy. It even took him by surprise. He was the last person to be rational and keep his cool during situations like this.

Maybe the heartache was making him numb to all of this.

Steve ultimately knew that the blonde had a point. But there was no way they would survive together. Living a double life wasn’t for Steve. Hooking up with a guy behind his girlfriend’s back and then hooking up with said girlfriend right after was mentally draining.

He just wished Billy would understand that.

Steve ran his hands through his hair, forming the words and putting them together. “I can’t do this double life shit dude. My parents.” Harrington paused. When Steve said parents, he mostly meant his dad. He was pretty sure his mom couldn’t care less. His dad would never live with a queer as a son. 

His words, not Steve’s.

“My parents would kill me. I would lose everything.”

All Billy could hear was excuses. 

“We’re fucking 18 years old. You don’t have shit to lose.” Billy snapped back. Steve looked down to the floor they were sitting on. “You knew what you were getting into when you decided to kiss me for the first time. That was your choice Steve, not mine. Stop blaming the fact that you can’t accept who you are on me.” 

Then it went quiet. Billy crossed his arms and Steve began to scratch the back of his head. Both of them had seemingly spoken their minds. As if knowing this, the mall lights began to power back on. 

The buzz of the luminents began to surround the room. 

Billy could finally get up and set himself free.

But for whatever reason, he didn’t. He stayed put. 

Then there was the eye contact again. Both of the boys were diving into each other’s eyes. Just like how they used to at the beginning of the school year.

Billy ultimately knew he had to get away.

“I need to get going-” As he attempted to get up, Steve grabbed his arm. The grip was hard, but it had a different energy to it. He wanted the blonde to say.

“I don’t know what I’m so afraid of.” Was all Steve said before he pulled Billy back to the ground and into a kiss. 

It was unexpected and contradictory. Billy didn’t know how the brunette could tell him one thing and then do the exact opposite.

The kiss was passionate. Steve brushed the curls of Billy’s mullet as they continued to share saliva. 

Then it hit Hargrove. 

He shouldn’t be doing this. This is exactly how he got hurt the first time. Steve was brushing through his hair the same way he always did. Kissing him the same way he did after they made love. If he let him do this again, it was only imminent before his heart would be broken once more.

Billy broke the kiss and got up swiftly as he wiped his lips.

“We can’t. You know we can’t. I can’t get fucked over again.” Steve only looked at him with upturned brows and apologetic eyes. 

Billy let out a sigh and made his way from behind the counter to the exit of the store.

Steve sat in the same spot, running his hands through his hair again. 

Now that Hargrove was walking out of his life for good, there's nothing more he wanted than for him to be in his arms.

'Fireworks behind my eyelids' - 15.09.2024

I went with something soft and sweet, and I wanted to put the boys in shorts and Steve in a pretty pink polo shirt 😊💕
