HOMESTUCK PILOT :)
when viewed as a proof of concept that crams as much as it can into an 11-minute vertical slice? i think it’s really fun! loved the strife sequence.
i’m sure the internet will be super normal about this :)

Fuck this. My God.
i dont even hate hazbin or vivziepop they are entirely inconsequential to my life and opinions and feelings its just that like. its so hellish to see on the horizon the shitstorm it will cause and the awful sorts of fans it will bring to a webcomic in shambles that can barely even be found to be read and knowing that if this becomes anything at all it will herald a revival of the fandom in the WORST way where all of the worst drama and discourse and annoying headcanons get retreaded by people who dont understand or care about the source posting directly in source tags
and its like, this is all corporate slop by people who dont give a shit and will ABSOLUTELY fuck the tone up taking something that transcended medium and converting it into a medium that CANNOT properly contain it, people who dont even have a track record with adaptation trying their hand at something notoriously impossible to adapt. hussie hates homestuck, VIZ wants more cheap bucks out of it, and they'll all keep trampling all over fans to keep making way for whatever corporate Product they want next, whether that's stealing the homestuck collection for themselves or creating a shitty little tonally dissonant pilot no one asked for using The Controversy Studio that makes mid animations that try too hard to be edgy.
homestuck already holds a pretty tenuous position, being made by a jerk that i can mostly ignore the existence of 99% of the time, but all this recent bullshit just tramples all over my heart. all i want is for them to shut the fuck up and stop touching it. just let it be what it is.
i'd also like to share this info from one of the hsod mods!
My favorite part of the homestuck pilot was the Dad Encounter, by far, explicitly because of how it differed from the comic
"It's a video game fight" wouldn't translate well to the screen, and besides, the point of the sequence isnt about how video games it is, it's about showing the way that John sees encounters with Dad as like a Big Thing, and it does this using the tools THIS medium has to show that
It's like Nichijou. No, I do not believe that canonically they could actually do that dragonball shit, nor do I think they canonically did. What they did is show us a brief encounter and chat between John and Dad, built up narratively and animatically to look the way John feels about it, exaggerated up to 11 to make it funny
Thoughts on the Homestuck Pilot (from someone who was not into Homestuck as a teen)
Because I've seen some people worried this version of the series may not be "beginner friendly". Hello! I am beginner (re: only knows a bit about HS mostly through friends) :). Here are my thoughts:
Absolutely delighted by the animation this style is SO charming. I like how it feels very similar to the style of the comic but is obviously updated to better suit the new format. I think the ONLY thing I would change would be the lines- I think it would be so cool if the lines were textured to be more pixelated which would make it even more reminiscent of that old, mspaint flash comic style, as well as make it stand out more from other series.
The personalities of the kids are absolutely exaggerated and cartoonish but they're also very fun?? I want to see more of them. I love their silly dynamics. They feel VERY much like young teenagers to me which I think is a good thing. Jade I can easily see becoming my fav.
The videogame type elements are very interesting! I do hope and expect they will be explained more in-depth later on, but as it is it wasn't too confusing. Obv there's a sort of inventory system in this world that characters can use, and that's about what I've got from that so far. Fascinating worldbuilding potential here.
On the topic of the format: The meta aspect is actually really fun. I love how many visual gags and such this allows. Characters pushing each other out of frame. Arguing with the narrator. It's so silly. I can tell the team had a lot of fun with it and it carries over into the show, it's delightful.
There is a lot of swearing but it didn't bother me personally. I could see others being annoyed with that, but frankly, given what bits I DO know about this series, I'm not entirely surprised.
Yes it was very fast but as I and others have said (and i say this specifically as someone with a minor in animation) this is a proof of concept. I have no doubts the actual show will allow for more breathing room. I came into this looking at it like a sort of extended trailer and I think that's how most pilots are meant to be seen as.
Overall: I really enjoyed this!! As someone who was not a Homestuck fan in its heyday this looks like a really fun adaptation of the series! The style is cute, the characters are fun, and I can see a lot of potential for the bits of worldbuilding they've given us so far! I will def be watching it if/when it comes out in full :))
Sure can’t wait for every instance of comic-accurate language and sexuality in the Homestuck cartoon to be blamed on Vivziepop.
WHAT DID U THINK OF THE HOMESTUCK PILOT EP
!! I LIKE IT! FULL HONESTY I ADORE THIS LIL THING A LOT !!
i came into it with an open mind because adapting homestuck into a medium without a reliance on static spoken/written dialogue seemed so out of reach! turns out i was pleasently surprsied on how they handled the pesterlogs between the characters!!! (tbh the teaser threw me off a bit it with how the convos would go but that was me uselessly nitpicking an obviously post nit trailer) it felt like a celebration of its cast, like it was made purely from the joy and love of the writers for a story they cherish :]
making all the kids voices actually sound young was such a great move, and i would die for every single one of them. those are our KIDS their hands are too small to hold the big world right now and they will be forever. when something bad happens to them im blowing this whole website up along with this stupid baka earth.
the fast pacing is comfortable for me! its how i expected it to go, with just enough detail that if you paid attention to the tiny things youd catch every move that would be played later. i liked how even though the smoke at the end of the dad fight seems out of nowhere, if you watch u can see john captchalouging his smoke pellets while digging through his chest that lasts like. half a second of frames in his first convo with dave. its super fun that they'll put tiny scenes like that to keep it whole despite having to move at breakneck speeds!
dave surprised me with how animated he was, but the fact is i cant expect to be able to pinpoint dave's issues from the first conversation, especially now that were in a new scenario with a big ass window to his whole demeanor during an interaction! we havent even seen him talk to anyone else yet, but i got hope in hussie n the writers that they will reveal dave as his same trauma ridden self, but more and more obvious as we get farther from johns limited perspective! pilot dave is a dick n i love him
my biggest worry is how its perceived by the wider audience, because the fast speeds is perfect for me as someone who as already read the comic! someone blissfully unrelated has no idea whats happening, and could easily be turned off by the lack of direction and drive. but honestly that a personal preference of the viewer!
SUPER STOKED TO SEE IT GET PICKED UP AND TURNED INTO AN ACTUAL SERIES! YEARS MORE VRISCOURSE, AS IT SHOULD BE!!
