THE DREAMLANDS - Campaign Trailer (2014)

This is a 12 year old preview, but, its production just wrapped up some 2 months ago!

"Die Traumlande" (The Dreamlands) is a totally crowd sourced & crowd invested independent film from writer/director Huan Vu.

"Dreamlands" is a dark fantasy movie freely adapted from HP Lovecraft's Dream Cycle - it's partly a wondrous road trip with a cosmic horror ending!

The film started out as a 100 minute long project that was supposed to be fully completed by 2024.

But, actual production lasted until late 2025 - some 10 years of work!

Half of its shooting schedule was spent outdoors.

With Iceland, Turkiya (Turkey) or Croatia being possible settings.

The other half was done in a German film studio.

Now, if I didn't make a big mistake, the plot changed a bit...

Originally, Roland (a troubled orphan) is led - by an old man - into another realm of existence.

A world created by Earth's greatest dreamers, over thousands of years!!

There, the old man stands revealed as a king - one needing to train Roland as his successor!

But, Roland has trouble controlling his feelings over his dark past.

In the end, the youth is forced to choose between adding to this mental realm or, totally destroying what so many dreamed into place...

But, now, the 'altered' or 'enriched' plot starts in Germany, 1927.

(Around March, Lovecraft finished "The Color Out of Space", was on the last draft of "Supernatural Horror in Literature" &, late in the year, wrote "The Very Old Folk."

He also worked on his short novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.")

Anyway, getting back to the 'new' story:

Auguste (a neurologist) is trying to save her reputation by helping a wealthy dementia patient.

Roland is most stable while talking about Karoline, once his childhood sweetheart.

But, he wants to raise Karoline from her grave!!

So, Roland's drags Auguste into the Dreamlands, a timeless & enchanting 'afterlife.'

A realm that's more real than any normal nightmare!

A world serving as a mirror to her own dark past, all leading to an existential battle for life itself...

Vu says his movie is inspired by these Lovecraft tales:

1. Celephais

2. The White Ship

3. Strange High House in the Mist.

&,

4. Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

The film hopes to build upon Howard's stories, yet, remain faithful to the core concepts of HPL's Cosmic Horror.

And, so far, this project is shaping up to be an ambitious & lavish work.

Reasons to Hope for the Best:

Vu's 1st film, "Damnatus" (2007), set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, now enjoys cult status - even though it's an unofficial adaptation!

Even better, Vu's 2nd film was "Die Farbe" (The Color, 2010), one of the best Lovecraftian movies ever made!!

Vu's even got the blessings of ST Joshi!

This esteemed scholar says that,

"The Dreamlands looks to be a truly impressive achievement, a melding of fantasy & horror fully in the spirit of HPL's own tales..."

This film is expected to premier during 2026.

The Color Out of Space (2010)

My rating: 6/10

Zordon hatte recht, zu viel pinke Energie ist tatsächlich gefährlich.

Gar nicht schlecht, für das Budget. Ein bisschen langsam vielleicht, und die computeranimierten Elemente stechen auch in schwarzweiß extrem heraus, aber streckenweise durchaus stimmungsvoll inszeniert.

Zordon was right, too much pink energy really is dangerous.

Not bad, for the budget. A bit slow maybe, and the CGI elements stick out even in black and white, but parts are quite atmospheric.

This is mostly a german language film made on a small budget.  What really makes it stand out is the visual choices the filmmakers have chosen. It is primarily presented as a black and white film, giving a feeling…
