EO (2022)
“Did I just save you, or have I stolen you? I hope you are not a criminal.”
Directed by: Jerzy Skolimowski Cinematography by: Michal Dymek Country: Poland / Italy / United Kingdom Genre: Drama / Adventure
Plot: The mostly sad, somewhat surreal adventures of a donkey separated from its loving owner at the circus.
Reasons to watch: Alternating between dreamlike and nightmarish, emotional subjectivity and detached objectivity, Jerzy Skolimowski proves that at 85 years old, he still hasn’t lost his edge, immersing the viewer in his evocative impressionism, painterly compositions, and innovative visual sequences. And if that’s not enough for you, EO also features a really cute ass.

The French Dispatch (2021)
“Perhaps the doubtful old maxim speaks true. All grand beauties withhold their deepest secrets.”
Country: Germany / United States Directed by: Wes Anderson Cinematography by: Robert D. Yeoman
Plot: An anthology of tales told from the perspectives of three American journalists in France during the mid-twentieth century.
Reasons to watch: It’s a film lover’s film through and through, with nonstop visual homages to New Wave and arthouse titans ranging from Godard to Bergman to Tarkovsky. Pure eye candy and an elite exercise in form, retaining Wes Anderson’s infectious playfulness and comedy despite all of its light experimentation. Really cool to see Wes translate and reinterpret New Wave cinema through the lens of his own incredibly unique artistry.
