Listen I know some historical figures get it worse than Hudson Lowe, largely by virtue of how more people know what a Marie Antoinette is rather than what a Hudson Lowe is, but when I say this book is slandering my boy

I mean it is slandering my boy!

So the book is hornblower and the island and I’ve never read any of the other hornblower books so I can’t speak as to how it ranks in the series. I can say this:

It’s Hudson Lowe slander straight down

The book invents an OC who I thought was just an expy for Lowe - it’s a bureaucratic little man who can’t get along with napoleon. So he’s replaced by Hornblower

Hornblower proceeds to roll up to the island and begins building napoleon a new house, begins negotiating with him on how it would be best to address him, allows him more free rein on the island - all things, incidentally, that Hudson Lowe did or tried to do but was then lambasted by Napoleon because Napoleon didn’t want to cooperate

But that’s my thing! In this AU, everyone Hornblower, who just does what Lowe did, does is just received perfectly by napoleon. Napoleon is the perfect little prison bean

And then we cut to the Congress of Vienna and Hudson lowe who apparently is a character in this story I thought he had been replaced by the expy, is plotting with Metternich to become governor of the island and assassinate napoleon and to also make his life miserable before

And like. Why. Why do this to my boy

Hudson Lowe Gets a Bad Rap - Shannon Selin

Sir Hudson Lowe, Napoleon's jailor on St. Helena, lacked the tact and intelligence necessary to handle Napoleon, but he had a difficult job.

Hudson Lowe, the unfortunate governor of St. Helena during Napoleon's imprisonment on the island, died on January 10, 1844 in relative poverty.

Bertrand and Montholon visit the Holland House, London

(I think Sept. 1821)  Bertrand and Montholon called here on Monday the 10th to present the Emperor's kind legacy to my mother. It was extremely gratifying to her to find not only what great amusement but what great use her presents had been of. He always opened the cases himself, and was very much pleased and delighted with many things in them....

Montholon has much the most appearance of talent; he has a countenance full of quickness and the cleverest eye I ever beheld. Bertrand is not the least handsome, but has a gentle and amiable expression. His feelings must be of a different sort — sorrow at the death of him whose fate he has so nobly followed, and pleasure at being freed from the barbarous treatment of Sir Hudson and the unhealthy rock of St Helena. The account he and Montholon give of Sir Hudson is worse even than what has before been known. His persecution lasted to the last moment, and even when the grave had destroyed all danger, his cruelty still followed his ashes, and he tried all he could to gain possession of his papers and his books. The former, however, were entirely out of his power; the latter, at least those furnished by Government, he did seize, though full of the Emperor's notes and observations. The books my mother sent out he had the impertinence to attempt to get; but that was prevented. No harshness, no indignity was omitted. The Emperor saw all the petty attempts made to insult him. He felt them acutely, but was silent. He never pretended to understand them.

It is very gratifying to think that with all Sir Hudson's harsh conduct and overstrained vigilance he never knew or prevented the regular correspondence between Longwood and Paris; and at least fifty people have been up to the Emperor's habitation, and had in one or two instances interviews with the Emperor himself, by stealth and at night. Both Bertrand and Montholon declare that his escape could easily have been effected, and that many opportunities occurred and were proposed to him; but he was a man never to attempt anything where concealment or disguise or bodily exertion was required. If he was not able to walk on board the ship with hat on his head and his sword at his side, he would take no measures to go.

The commander of British (and also Corsican) troops on Capri was none other than Sir Hudson Lowe, who would later preside over Napoleon’s captivity on Saint Helena as the island’s governor.
