5, 10, and 28 for the book asks!!
5: What was your relationship with books like as a child? Oh, I devoured them. like, right from the beginning I was in love with books!! all the home videos show me with books before I could even actually read them. I also taught myself to read - one evening my mother was reading to me and I just took the book off of her and took over. I hoarded whatever books I could get - most of them were from op shops or old library sales or second hand and so they were all a bit worse for wear and I rarely had a full set of anything, but I loved them so much. my shelves were stacked two rows deep and I had precarious piles all over the floor. I read fast and I read a LOT.
10: Bookmarks, dog ears or leaving the novel open and face down to keep your spot? Honestly a bit of everything! but also I usually will finish a book in one sitting - its rare that I have to leave a book for a long period of time, so either its face down, or just shut completely with no marker and I just flick back through. I have a collection of bookmarks (I love the book depository ones in particular) but I rarely actually use them. non-fiction books I’ll tend to read a bit slower so I’ll use bookmarks more in those. I love the look of dog eared books but I tend to dog ear mine more as a reference to a section I enjoy, not as a bookmark while reading!
28: Thoughts on adults reading YA? I fkn Love YA! I think the majority of what I read is YA, and I have no shame in that. I tend to read as an escape and a stress reliever, so. also because I like to read in one sitting, the length of YA is ideal - any time I try to read a longer book I will end up still awake at 5am and end up very frustrated with myself! I think its important to let people read whatever it is they enjoy. and theres a lot of really fantastic YA out there!
How do you know if a supernatural being is around? I apparently lived in a haunted house where multiple people - inducing my parents, one of our cats, and two of my friends - saw and felt some Weird Stuff but I never felt a damn thing. One friend was sleeping in my room with me and felt like she was being Stared At and that was the worst she felt, scissors would go missing and were found embedded in the wall behind the landlords' TV. But not once did I see or feel anything, not even unease.
Well, it’s complicated. Not so much because you need extra senses or clairvoyance to figure out if something is going on, but because supernatural and paranormal activity can be so varied. It’s a sliding scale roughly the size of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Fleeting glimpses and feelings of unease are, nine times out of ten, our brains playing tricks on us based on available light, time of day, temperature, outside stressors, and situational variables (i.e. are you alone in the house, have you watched or heard anything unsettling lately, etc).
And also, in certain circumstances, people just expect to be scared. When our brains detect that there might be something out of the ordinary, but can’t quite figure out what it is, the fight-or-flight reaction starts ramping up. There might be a threat or there might be no threat at all, but that ancestral DNA says it’s better to jump at a shadow than to ignore it and be eaten by a cave lion. (The feeling of Being Watched falls very heavily into this category.)
When this happens, we feel “creeped out.” And that can account for a LOT, especially when combined with other slightly-odd happenings that under any other circumstances would provoke nothing more than a momentary pause and perhaps a, “Huh. That’s weird.”
Household pets also react as much to what their humans are doing as to the environment around them. If their humans are jumpy and on-edge, then the animals will pick up on those cues. Because just maybe those weird two-legged food-givers are picking up on something they’ve missed.
All this being said, it’s entirely possible that you just missed every single supernatural thing that happened in your home, but it’s equally likely that everyone else was freaking themselves out.
Always look for mundane explanations first. Then look for things that absolutely cannot be explained through mundane means. The scissors bit does give me pause, since it’s very difficult to explain, but one single incident does not a haunting make.
If this happens again in your new home, try asking your family to document what they’re seeing and feeling. Have them write it down, if they’re willing. They don’t necessarily need to share it with each other or with you, at least not right away. Keep track of things for a few weeks or a month, then have them compare notes. If they’re saying the same things independently of each other, then investigate further.
And if you’re worried, you can always lay down a salt line, just in case.
Hope this helps!
18 for the fairy tale ask!
Which would be worse for you - if a loved one got transformed into a fawn and was thus vulnerable and mute, or if a splinter of a devilish mirror fell into their eye and made them cold and unfeeling?
Devilish mirror for sure--at least with the fawn I could keep it safe and teach it how to use a Speak-n-Spell or whatever.
🛋 Do you hoard stuff or are you a minimalist? 😊
Massive hoarder ! I also, have a bad habit of buying every color of the same clothing item :|
hugatiefling replied to your post “help, i want this stuffed yucca plant”
We sell these where I work and I can attest to their durability if that's something that concerns you. Also they're very soft and cute
it could dissolve in my hands on contact and i would still buy it
Sorry to bother you, but would you happen to know if the Green Witchcraft book series by Ann Moura is a reliable resource? If you'd rather not answer, that's cool, you probably get these questions a lot.
I really liked Moura’s Grimoire for the Green Witch and her Mansions of the Moon book as well. However, from what I read of her Green Witchcraft books, I did not like them. Our opinions on certain historical events differs very greatly.
But that’s just my opinion.
