Ruta Maya by Cerveceria Calavera

Ruta Maya is an Austin-based coffee roaster that works with small growers in Latin America. They have collaborated with Mexico City’s Cerveceria Calavera to create this Belgian Dark Ale infused with Mexican coffee. There’s not a whole lot of Belgian character here other than perhaps a Chimay-esque wine-like sweetness. This is basically a stout though...with a huge head! The coffee flavor is very strong and there are also hints of dark berries, dark bread, chocolate and vanilla. The balance is a little wonky but overall this is a good beer.

This was titled “Chibi Fish,” but I'm pretty sure that shaky lines and huge eyes don’t automatically make something a chibi.
