US president says his administration is going to ‘get along good’ with China, and reiterates that Xi Jinping has invited him to visit China.
There's not enough time. There's just not enough time!
Edward swore profusely as he banged his head onto a small table holding a map of Egypt in front of him. The papyrus was thickly woven and detailed, with small clay structures he commissioned from a local friendly jackal artisan (keeping in close touch and liking with the general populace was very important right about now) in place of the pyramids, houses, buildings, and other important places.
It's been 2 whole weeks since the dreadful promise from Fukayna. 2 weeks! That's half of their time gone, and still Edward has no damned idea what to do.
He had to admit- Fukayna was smart. He had every little detail hidden, every single contract tucked away, and mass searchings across all of the Nile for any suspicious activity or unmonitored buildings gave no more luck than usual.
But there was one thing that that old worker of his- whom they found out's name was Reneni- had told him that rooted deep seeds in his mind.
It was in another interrogation with Bastet. They were heavily involved with this one man now, and he seemed willing to spill practically anything he knew- especially now that he wasn't able to choke himself due to two guards on both sides preventing him from doing so at all times.
One thing Reneni had told them was the location of a site holding a ton of slaves.
A camp, hidden somewhere within the deepest parts of the desert, pinpointed exactly on the very map in front of him by Reneni himself. There was still a blot of grease from where he put his pudgy fingertip.
But Edward had that site checked a thousand different times. There was nothing to be seen there, and day and night, there was no activity from anywhere near the area. Occasionally people would come out of their houses to hunt there, or just go out there to take a trek, but all of the spotted people were heavily interrogated and searched, and none of them seemed to have any correlation with the issue.
It stumped him. It stumped him badly, especially because he knew Reneni was telling the truth. Reneni had never told a single lie before from what they knew- his information was consistent, and no matter how much he said he had an iffy memory, every single document they had him recall was on point down to the word.
It just... didn't make sense. Edward stood up from the table, moving over to examine the stain left closer as if the intricacies of it would give him some sort of revelation. He kneeled down to stare at it, his eyes sifting over every single weaving, error, and bump in the fibers.
After a long while of thought, he glanced up at the window in front of him in the temple's sandy, golden walls and noticed the glint of the sun hiding itself on the horizon. Edward sighed, uncrouching and beginning to step away from the table, thinking to fancy himself some supper before he went and gave his new orders to his guards- before his fingertip caught on the edge of the map, and he found himself tugging on it slightly accidentally.
Edward looked back at the map, a little annoyed, and shook the small string holding him off of his hand- just to realize something.
Seeing the dark, wooden underside of the sand-colored map made him think.
He had looked all over the skies and seas of Egypt. He tracked every grain of sand along the Nile and every blot along the borders out. He sent people out into the main Circus, even, to search for these mysterious places Fukayna might be hiding in.
He looked north, west, south, east, up and along... but never down.
The realization struck him like an arrow to the chest. He stared at the underside of the map just as the handmade clay structures slid down the side of it, teetering on the edge, about to fall off of Egypt...
It felt like... a metaphor. A sign.
The words engraved themselves in his mind the moment he thought them:
If I don't look below the surface, in the cracks, and between the lines, then Egypt will fall into nonexistence as quickly as it was created.
...
He unhooked himself from the map and darted out of the room, searching for the nearest guard. As soon as he found one, he barked:
GET SHOVELS AND ALL THE GUARDS YOU POSSIBLY CAN! WE LEAVE IN AN HOUR!
The man saluted, and ran off.
Edward didn't know he could yell like that. But his body shook with excitement, the epiphany making him feel like he was lighter than air. If he was right about this, then not only could he possibly free hundreds, maybe thousands of slaves in an instant- but he could uncover more of the secrets and mysteries of Fukayna's camps, and get more clues to ripping off the face of the facade.
They'd be one large step forward to stopping the course of Egypt's downfall.
Edward stared back into the map room for a moment. It looked like it was encouraging him, calling him to fight like he always wanted to. This was his chance to kill a damn king.
And as he rushed outside to group up the warriors, he felt himself with the scarab wings of the Gods on his shoulders, and the blessed marks of Apis along his body.
Today was the day they won.
