I love queer historical romance but i hate when authors take the easy way out and sanitise the setting of all the homophobia and difficulty the couple would realistically face. I don't WANT everyone in the book to be queer and outspoken about it, i don't WANT both parties to not even freak out a LITTLE at the idea of being queer, i don't WANT them to be accepted by everyone!!!

I want them to face adversity, i want them to have to hide and be angry at the injustice of it but not be able to fix it, i want them to battle their internalised homophobia, i want them to be scared of violence in case of discovery, i want them to feel isolated from their peers due to their sexuality, i want them to painfully carve out a little space for themselves in the world!!! i want them to have a bittersweet ending where they are together but can never be together in the way a straight couple would due to their identities!!!! give me the HISTORICAL in the historical gay romance! i don't want a contemporary novel in historical cosplay!!! washing away the struggle does a disservice to real life queer people throughout history who had to hide or fight tooth and nail to be who they were!!!!!!!!

I wish depression were an emergency. I wish someone could take one look at how sick I am and go “oh my god, we need to get you to a hospital!” and then when we get there I get rushed into surgery and the surgeons say “it’s a good thing you brought her here when you did, this is a seriously advanced case” and then they put me under and spend the next ten hours pulling metres of long, sticky black strands of gunk out of my body, throwing it immediately into an incinerator so that it can’t infect anyone else. And then they could stitch me back up and I could rest a few days, and when I leave the hospital everyone can see how much better I am and they congratulate me saying “well done, you’ve been so brave, I’m so glad you’re ok. I love you.”
