Writing to the Moon & Back - Generative Writing Class (Online)

Class Description: "The moon making a poem possible… what can we say about that?" – Mary Ruefle  Looking toward our moon (and other moons) anew, this generative class, open to all genres, features eclectic writing experiments inspired by scientific, esoteric, and mythological ideas, to jump-start our creativity and playfully upend clichés. Readings include: Neruda, Ruefle, Cheng, Lorca. SCRIBES Creative Writing Youth Camps - Summer 2022 - Online & In Person

Hugo House is running Scribes Creative Writing Camps for many different age groups again this summer 2022 -- with a return to some in-person camps as well as continuing to offer online camps.

This summer I’ll be co-teaching with Matt Gano the following Scribes sessions:

* 7th & 8th Grade Creative Writing Scribes, JULY 25th-29th, ONLINE. 10am-3pm PST, with a break for lunch 12-1pm PST. Description: In this exploratory camp, students will develop their creative writing abilities by experimenting in a wide variety of prose and poetry. Students will examine works from carefully curated authors and will participate in writing activities, craft exercises, and artistic experiences designed to inspire their imaginations. The week will culminate with an online reading celebration of student work. This camp is for students entering 7th & 8th grade in Fall 2022 and will take place online using Zoom and Google Classroom. July Community Write-ins Every Thurs 5:30 PST (Online)

I’ll be leading the Hugo House Community Write-In sessions for July, which happen every THURSDAY from 5:30-6:30 p.m. PST. Join writers from across the country and around the world every Thursday evening and get your words flowing in community. Write-in leaders rotate each month; I’ll be leading the sessions on July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29. After a healthy dose of inspiration, you’ll get time to write, and the opportunity to connect with other writers and option to share. Open to all kinds of writing response (journal, blog, poetry, prose, start something new or get some fresh ideas for a work-in-progress), this is an hour to jumpstart your creativity in community.

SCRIBES - Youth Creative Writing Camps

Registration is open for Scribes Creative Writing Camps offered through Hugo House this summer! I am excited to be co-teaching these two sessions, but there are lots of offerings available for a range of ages. 

Both of these camps will take place online via Zoom, so students can connect in from anywhere. Sliding scale tuition (no questions asked), and full scholarships also available (quick application, rolling).

9th-12th Grade - Creative Writing Scribes, w/ instructors Corinne Manning & Sierra Nelson, July 19th-23rd, 2021. (This camp will take place online using Zoom.) In this exploratory camp, students will develop their creative writing abilities by experimenting in a wide variety of prose and poetry. Students will examine works from carefully curated authors and will participate in writing activities, craft exercises, and artistic experiences designed to inspire their imaginations. 1) WRITING ALONG WITH MADNESS, RACK, AND HONEY: Reading & Generative Course 

8-Week Class, Sundays 9/20 - 11/08, 1:10-3:10 p.m (PST). Register. 

Class Description: Inspired by Mary Ruefle’s innovative book of essays Madness, Rack, and Honey, we’ll savor reading 1-2 chapters each week, then generate our own writing (poetry or prose) using in-class writing prompts that jump off Ruefle’s text. Whether you’ve read the book before or are coming to it new, you’ll leave this class with a passel of new drafts and some fresh creative approaches sparking off of Ruefle’s one-of-a-kind mind. Come curious and ready to experiment! Optional instructor conferences at end.

2) CRASH COURSE RAINBOW: Generative Workshop on Color & Poetry

2-Day Class, Sundays 12/06 & 12/13, 1:10 – 4:10 p.m. (PST). Register.  

Class Description: “A lane of Yellow led the eye…” -Emily Dickinson As the light lengthens its autumnal into winter slant, it’s the perfect time to reawaken color in our writing. Drawing from artistic, literary, and scientific texts for inspiration — as well as our own experiences and imagination — we’ll expand our synesthetic palette and experiment with a prismatic array of generative in-class prompts. Awaken your senses and writing life! Slanted toward poetry; all levels and all genres welcome.

Cross-Pollinating: Poetry & Prose Hugo House Class Online

This 6-week Hugo House class meeting via Zoom on Tuesday evenings 7-9pm, June 16th-July 21st, will get you generating new drafts in both genres and hybrid work.  Open to all levels of experience. 

Cross-Pollinating: Poetry & Prose Class Description: Exploring where poetry and prose can boldly intersect and enliven one another in unexpected ways, we will look at examples and write our own prose poems, haibun, lyrical short talks, and other hybrid forms in this fun and generative class. Drawing inspiration from writers such as Anne Carson, Gertrude Stein, Bashō, Elizabeth Bradfield, and Joy Williams, you will leave with a batch of new writing and a bushel of fresh approaches.
