I hope you aren’t disappointed by the direction I’m choosing to take this, but to be fair, there are only three possible ships for a song like this (and I’m not invested enough in Lisa/Tommy or Oubliette/Noh).

She’s not technically an ex. Loki is aware of that on a number of levels. He’s knows that there was sort of a chance for it, once upon a time before the child Loki had her sent thousands, maybe millions of years back. But the strength of their friendship (as much as Leah was in denial about it), was enough that he can understand why it could compete with the shallower connections that the other members of the “League of Evil Exes” had to the team.

(Well, he wasn’t sure that all those connections were shallow. A few of them, sure. The Ultimate Nullifier probably was, and nobody was sure what the Patri-not was.)

After they run into a younger Leah at the beginning of her exile, he starts to wonder.

(really though what’s the format? is it more a Nightvalian “one main narrator with occasional other contributions” or more “live rpg recording with a lot of people talking over each other”?)

I HAVE!! I’M GOING TO MAKE AN OBNOXIOUS AMOUNT OF SHITPOSTS ABOUT THIS BOOK FOR THE NEXT WEEK!!

asdfghjkkjh okay I got into this book because of Margaret’s dnd podcast (it’s called Spell Check, everyone should check it out if you haven’t already) which she does with a bunch of other authors (Emily Duncan, LL Mckinney, Adib Khorram, Laura Pohl, and Linsey Miller). I had already read Linsey’s book the Mask of Shadows and it’s sequel so when I heard that she was doing a dnd podcast I was like oh man I gotta get in on this shit.

And honestly I hadn’t heard of most of the other authors in the group at first except I think Adib and Emily, but I got into the podcast and then Margaret and LL came to my local independent bookstore together on tour and one of my best friends who also listens to Spell Check and I were like ok we have to go. My friend was cosplaying as Laura Pohl’s Spell Check character, and we made these Spell Check posters cobbled together from the podcasts’s official art for them to sign and by the end of the event my friend and I were both like OMG WE HAVE TO READ THE MERCIFUL CROW RIGHT NOW and I finally last night did the thing. (Reading in the fall/winter months is hard because like. so many new books come out between September-October so im trying to play catch-up on all my book fandoms right now)

IT’S SO GOOD THOUGH! the writing is so good, im always a slut for authors who give their characters distinct vernacular differences the way Fie has a different language pattern from Tavin and Jas. madcap uses they/them pronouns and i went feral I would die for them. THE PART WHERE TAVIN IS LIKE “YOU MAKE ME BELIEVE I CAN DO SOMETHING BETTER WITH MY LIFE THAN DIE”!!!!!!!!! IM GONNA LOSE IT!

I read this and am DELIGHTED by it and also not caught up so idk if this would make sense but you KNOW how people love making things casual in memes so it starts with just ‘the beholding’ but eventually it just becomes 'oh come on Jon Archivist coulda warned me’. Leave room for Jon.
