Jack looked at the girl a long time. She looked about his age. At least… the age he looked. And she didn’t have eyes that glowed so she wasn’t a Little Sister. And she didn’t look like him so the scientists weren’t replacing him for a better behaved experiment. She was just… a girl. A really, real girl. Giving him a really, real present.
He took the stuffed creature and hugged it close in the crook of his arm, a thumb finding it’s way between his lips as he tried to figure out the reality of this situation.
“I’m Jack.” He offered lamely, barely remembering to stop sucking his thumb before he spoke. “Thank you for the toy. I don’t have any toys to give you….” he felt bad for that. Here was a girl, a CHILD, giving him a toy and he had nothing to offer. “Do you know a lot of kids?” The boy asked softly, putting his thumb back in his mouth.
