9. Your muse wraps their hands tightly around my muse’s neck.
The day had finally come, a day that Diane McClintock thought would never arrive. The wheels squeaked softly as the nurse helped to roll her gurney down to the operating room. As the doors opened for them, she could see Dr. Steinman and another two nurses putting the final touches on organising their work station. When the surgeon deemed everything to his liking, he turned back to the wash bin, washing his hands and forearms vigourously and dipping them into a disinfecting bath. After another nurse helped pull his gloves on, Steinman pulled down his mask, leaning over Diane’s gurney.
“Ah, there you are. Good morning, Ms. McClintock! And how are we to-day? Excited, eh? A little nervous? Well, there’s nothing to fear. You’re in the best hands in the entire city...perhaps even the world.” He smiled charmingly at her, reaching down to pat one of her hands. Before he could turn away and let the anesthesiologist take over, Diane reached out, hooking her fingers on the collar of his surgical gown. She pulled him close, wrapping her hands around his throat.
“Steinman...my looks are all I have left down here. At least, it’s what it feels like. Do not mess this up, or...or you’ll be very sorry.” It was a lot for Diane. The attack had awoken a few long-dormant emotions inside her and first and foremost, it had told her not to take any sort of pain or abuse from anyone any more.
Steinman recoiled, staring down at her with both disbelief and a tinge of fear. Adjusting his collar and keeping his eyes locked on her, he cleared his throat. “...I assure you, there’s nothing to worry about. I wouldn’t be down here if you weren’t guaranteed the finest work in the world.” He pulled his mask back up, more than ready for her to be put under. Diane settled back as she watched the mask being lowered and fastened on her face. It wasn’t much, but she felt a warm sense of victory wash over her and suddenly, the operating seemed a lot less scary.
She’d been let down and used too much and it ended in that operating room, right there and right then.
