Spirit Work 101: Types of Spirits

Disclaimer: All my spirit work advice is from personal experience and what I have been taught by mentors. Everyone has different experiences and this is only what I suggest.

When it comes to spirit work, one of the most common questions I have seen is, “Who do I contact when starting out?” Personally, I divide spirits into four different categories: Human, Species, Nature, and Deities.

Deities

Yes, you read right. Deities are a type of spirit. However, they do have more energy and power, and therefore they tend to be a little easier to contact. Many times, I will recommend that when someone first starts out in spirit work, if you already have a deity you connect with, try working on communication with your deity/ies. This tends to be a “safer” route, as deities are less likely to manipulate or attack you with malice without being triggered in some way. Another reason is that deities have a larger amount of energy and power, so they can be easier to sense and hear. They have an easier time manipulating divination tools for communication. Finally, as you already will have a bond with the deity, the bonds you have will only strengthen and make it even easier for communication.

Nature

In my experience, most anything that is alive will have some sort of spirit. All animals and plants, perhaps even fungi. I have found most rivers and lakes and other bodies of water will have a sort of spirit as well. Certain natural landmarks like mountains. These spirits are a little more on the neutral side. You can communicate as you would with any other spirit, but a bond with the land they are on is needed. To do this, offerings and time spent is what I recommend. Always show respect. Recycle/throw away trash you find left around. Helping the land and the nature in question tends to appease nature spirits and have a bond form with them. Once the bond forms, they will be more willing to speak with you.

Human

Human spirits can be trickier, as many times they are “stuck” to wander the earth and are not ready to pass on. Humans also can be anywhere on the greyscale of “good” and “evil”. They can manipulate and show malice. They can simply be upset with their situation and lash out. They can call for help. There are so many different personalities just as you would find with a physical, live human. Always take this into account, and get to know them carefully.

Species

When I say species, this is where I mean the “mythological creatures.” Just like humans, all demons, vampires, werewolves, fae, and so forth have a greyscale of “good” and “evil”. I have seen “good” demons. I have seen “evil” angels. But those terms are moot in my opinion. They all have personalities, goals, passions, and so forth. Now, certain species will seem to be more malicious due to their moralities being different than with humans. This specifically pertains to demons and fae most commonly. It is always something to keep in mind, that they will have different rules in their societies, therefore some things may seem malicious to us but not to them. And some things can seem malicious to them that are okay with us. Point being, with every species you encounter, read up on mythology, keep an open mind, and definitely be careful. Species are the trickiest because of this, and I recommend being fairly confident in your abilities before reaching out to them, or work with an expert.

TLDR; start with deities and nature spirits, always show respect, and take the time to form bonds.

Types of Hauntings

The following are the types of spirits which haunt places. A haunting means that the spirit is typically bound to one area due to traumatic death and sometimes, they are unaware that they are even dead. All of these are thus human spirits, even the strongly malevolent ones. Contrary to what many people believe, demons do not actually haunt places and typically do not seek to harm people (as they have been the object of many misconceptions); malevolent human spirits are usually the actual “demons”.

Wraiths:

A Wraith is a typical, lingering human spirit. These remain behind after death since they are unable to move on from their traumatic death; sometimes unaware that they had died. Sometimes, they might even be stuck in a time-loop of their own death as it plays over and over; though they lose their memory each time it restarts. Some spirits are in fact aware of their deaths and will remain stuck in this location, often causing them to go insane. On rarer occasions, a spirit will refuse to move on due to having a very strong bond to a loved one, even choosing to remain on Earth together after death. In these cases, the spirits tend to remain peaceful and don’t usually make themselves known to the living. When Wraiths manifest, they tend to appear as transparent apparitions or as orbs; they may sometimes be attracted to people who they believe can free them to the afterlife.  

Poltergeists:

A Poltergeist is what a Wraith becomes if they go insane; this causes them to have more strength to influence the physical plane, allowing them to take out their rage on their surroundings. These spirits are less common than normal Wraiths thankfully, since they have more capacity to harm people. Some Poltergeists have been known to throw things at people or even push them down stairs, sometimes killing them. When a spirit reaches this state, there is not much one can do to free them unless the building they are stuck in is rapidly destroyed (since quick destruction tears the bond their consciousness made to the location at death).  

Khaibits (Shadow People):  

Khaibits are the spirits of humans who were malevolent during their lives and died in ways that caused them to remain bound to Earth. These spirits appear as black humanoids, darker than shadows, and have the ability to latch onto people who come across them. They are always dangerous and are much more likely to try to kill people than Wraiths or Poltergeists. These are human spirits who, during life, had allowed their Khaibit (shadow aspect, their darker self) to become who they are. They are people who had given into their destructive habits, hatred, and sadism; causing their Khaibit to become all that’s left of their spirit, which ends up lingering after having a traumatic death. Khabits are chaotic spirits who present different types of maliciousness; some are moreso destructive while others might be very lustful (these are the spirits known to touch people inappropriately).

Tar Spirits:

While not all tar spirits are human in origin (some of them are from different spirit races of many types), the majority of these are human, so they will be included here. They are also different from the other three categories since they are not true hauntings due to being free to roam wherever they like; both on Earth and in the spirit realm. When a human becomes evil in their life and fully gives into their corruption, allowing it to twist them and destroy their sense of morality, they end up going insane and become a tar spirit when they die. Their difference from the Khaibits is that the Khaibits have not gone insane, have less power, and have some moral limits, though they are still very malevolent. The tar spirits, however, are likely the most evil beings to exist due to their absolute surrender to their impulses. This makes tar spirits (whose majority comes from humans) the true “demons”. They appear as either giant leech-like creatures made of tar and with many mouths full of sharp teeth, or as strange humanoid figures of moving tar.  

These beings are the ones responsible for possessions and utilize possession in order to ruin lives since they hate all of life. They roam through places on Earth, seeking individuals who allowed their minds to become weakened from trauma, as these are the only types of people a spirit can possess. Once they possess this person, it is not obvious that they are possessed (as media portrays), instead, the individual takes on the characteristics of a tar spirit and becomes malevolent. The individual who has been possessed does not even realize that this has happened. They usually give into the hatred that the tar spirit feeds them with, but an exceptionally strong individual can fight against these impulses with will-power. Though if a person does give in (which they usually do), their spirit becomes covered with tar and they cannot turn back.  

In order to recognize if a tar spirit is around you, pay attention to how they make you feel or what they look like. Though usually, they disguise themselves as deities or other beings in order to subtly harm someone’s psychology, or to seduce the person into breeding with them in the astral. In order to to recognize a tar spirit trying to disguise as something different, pay attention to the following tactics they use:

A supposed deity, demon, angel, etc. tries to convince you to marry or have sex with them when you hardly even know them. Tar spirits routinely manipulate unsuspecting humans into reproducing for them, or even forcing themselves upon others.

They tell you that you are very special and not like other people (they may say you’re a god, you have a special destiny above others, you are their own prophet, etc.)

They don’t let you speak/work with other spirits 

They may try to convince you to leave your close friends or lie about friends trying to betray you

They try to convince you that your negative habits/emotions should be embraced

They are toxic and manipulative towards you in general

In order to banish a tar spirit, you can either attack them in the astral by projecting yourself at them, you can call upon a deity for aid, or you can listen to specific spiritual chants that are sung at certain vibrancies that tar spirits hate. Here is an example of such a chant, be sure to play it loud and out in the open (not through headphones).

Today was crazyyy!! Just a heads up, this is going to be a long post, so feel free to scroll.

So I went over to my buddy’s house, to help him out. While I was gone, he had finally re-embraced his inherited abilities, and began to do spirit work again. But in doing so, he accidentally invited some spirits into his home and he was having some problems. He asked me to come over and help, so come over I did.

He actually bought some sage, and he had only cleansed one room in the house so far, but man it actually felt amazing in there. I kinda really want to buy some now lol ANYWAYS

The plan was that I was going to confront any spirits that were in the house. Next, I would do an energetic cleanse for each room. Then we would make some protective sigils to place in each room, since he doesn’t really have any protection currently.

So we went up to his room to prepare. He wasn’t really going to do anything, but I wanted him in the same room while I was doing it because I was curious if he was going to feel or sense anything. I entered a meditative state, and began.

I went up into void space, and I called out to any nearby spirits to come out. I saw this very small, shy spirit come out. It was very timid, and... nice. I spoke to it. I gave it a small gift of energy, and it was less scared. I got the sense that this might actually be like a house spirit (maybe even a brownie??) but regardless I decided to ask them to leave, since I was doing a total cleanse. They agreed, and left.

I then did a cleanse of the room. I channeled some pure, healing energy, and put it into an orb, and put that in the center of the room. Then I channeled more energy into it, causing it to expand, further and further, slowly filling up the space of the entire room, and pushing any and all negative and bad energies out of the room. 

Once I was finished, I asked my friend if he had picked anything up. Just a note, I hadn’t told him exactly how I was going to do anything, just that I was going to speak to some spirits and do a cleanse. Anyways, he asked me if I had made some energy and pushed it into and out of the room, and if I had made it pulse. I was surprised because that’s exactly what I did!! And he picked it up and sensed it!! He also said that he saw me almost surrounded in like a cone of flame, which would be when I was channeling energy lol. I’m very impressed.

I did this to the rest of the house. I came across another spirit, a large, long, ghastly (like a gas) spirit with a long, wispy black tail. I confronted it and asked what it was doing here and it was sheepish, and I immediately sensed that it did not belong. I asked it to leave, and it in return asked me what I would do if I didn’t. In response, I armored up, and it got scared and agreed to leave. I made it leave immediately lol.

The other rooms of the house had some pretty dense energy; I had a really hard time doing my cleanse and pushing the energy out. I did a cleanse on the whole house, even the other rooms. I channeled soo much energy through me. I haven’t done this big of energy work in a long time. I’m feeling pretty drained, and I know that I’m going to sleep very well tonight.

Finally... I went into his guest bedroom. He’s asked me in the past if the energy in the room felt off, and it kind of did. But I went in there this time, and immediately the energy felt... different. I again went into void space and asked if there were any spirits around, and immediately one came up and sat across from me. They had an older feel, but I wasn’t really able to get a lot of physical details. I tried speaking with them, and realized that I was having a really hard time hearing anything at all. But I was feeling like emotions and energy as a response instead of words, and it clicked... a human! 

I’ve only interacted with a couple of human spirits, but for whatever reason I can’t communicate with them directly as I can with other spirits. It’s all with emotions and energy rather than words. I realized that it might be a human spirit, and I asked to see them properly, and I was able to pick up more details. They were older, maybe like around 60′s, with a wrinkled brow and forehead. Tan skin. I was having a hard time picking anything else up. 

I asked them why they were there, and I was met with confusion. I asked them if they wanted to leave, and they pondered on it. I asked if there was something that they needed to do before they left, and they nodded. But when I asked what it was, I was met with static. I had the thought that maybe my friend needed to talk to her, and she nodded. 

I told her that I would arrange it, and then I asked if it was okay to cleanse the room, and I got a nod. I tried to, but I was unable to. At this point, I could feel their energy throughout the room, and it was very strong. I couldn’t push it out, it was very sturdy. But I realized that I didn’t really need to do a cleanse on the room; even though the energy is different, this spirit was actually protecting the room...

I went downstairs to talk to my friend, but... I was having a hard time disconnecting from the spirit. She kept nudging me, and then it got stronger. I got the impression that she wanted me to tell my friend. I showed him my notes, and he thought it was interesting. But I still couldn’t disconnect. I asked what she wanted... and she said “you need to talk to me” to my friend. After a little while, I was finally able to disconnect.

It was such a surreal feeling. Like... their presence was extremely strong; I was much more present in the astral then in the physical during that time. I had a hard time focusing or talking even. I ended up typing and showing it to my friend instead of talking. So weird.

After that, we spelled out some terms for the protection spell and designed a sigil. I charged it for him, and then we made copies for each room in his house, so that it can all be protected. After that, we hung out because I was totally wiped lol.

So yeah! That’s pretty much it. An insane experience!! Lots of energy work and spirit work. But a big experience with human spirits, for sure.

Greeting the (Human) Dead - Bronwyn's Guide

I struggled, especially in the very beginning, to contact any human spirit I wished to speak with. It was an intimidating meeting for me, but I did eventually learn the best way for me personally to feel secure and comfortable, while maintaining the same balance for the spirit in question. These are things I find to work well, but not everyone speaks to the dead in this way. Some may find this works wonders, while others may run into a road block. Remember that everyone's practice is different, and if this doesn't work for you, that's okay! Keep trying until you are happy with your method.

Below I have listed a basic 'starter's kit' for greeting the dead. These things can be changed, nixed, or otherwise disregarded if it works best for you. These are merely suggestions.

What You'll Need:

An offering plate/offering (food, art, poetry, water, trinkets, coins, etc. Non physical offerings are excellent as well: playing an instrument if you know they liked music in their life, sending energy, and even reading a book they enjoyed)

Protective wards/stones (I use a few of each. Black tourmaline is my go-to crystal)

A divination method or two (I tend to go with cartomancy, stichomancy, scrying, and pendulum)

Something scented (completely optional. I just find that attractive smells make spirits more likely to want to sit with me)

A quiet place where you won't be disturbed

Gather all the supplies you wish to, and settle in. Arrange your wards/stones if you have them. Light any candles, incense, or turn on a diffuser if you choose to do so. This first step I am about to explain was the hardest for me to master; calling the spirit.

It takes time, and sometimes, the don't show up. Spirits have no obligation to visit with us, but some do if they're interested or need help. Be patient while you wait, maybe have some kind of soft music playing. If you play this music every time you want them to come visit you, they may be more likely to recognize that you are calling to them. Announce at this point that their is an offering waiting for them if they choose to take it.

You can speak out loud and ask them to come to you, or repeat their name silently in your head (if you know it). If you are not looking for any particular spirit, you may be able to say something simple, such as, "If the spirit of a deceased human lingers, they are welcome to visit me". You can use any sensitive abilities you have to decipher if they have arrived, or go for a more direct answer by using any of the divination methods you like. Some people use a flashlight that a spirit can turn on or off in response to a question, so that's always an option. Candle flames and their movements are also very useful for spirit communication.

When you feel a spirit hasn't arrived, and you have waited a fairly long time, announce that the invitation has been closed for now, so they don't come by unannounced. Laying down these simple boundaries, especially at first, can lead to a smoother relationship in the long run. Even if there isn't a spirit around, it won't hurt anything to say this.

If you do feel they have arrived, you can introduce yourself and give them their offering. It can be a small greeting, but enough to let them know your intentions and who you are (vaguely). Ex:

"Hello, my name is Bronwyn. I am looking for a human spirit to talk to and divine the future with. This is for you, either way. Are you interested in a conversation with me?"

Give them the offering, and after a minute or so, see if they have a response as to whether or not they want to be a part of your conversation. If yes, continue to ask questions, wait, and divine. This is how you can communicate, for the first time, and every time after if you like it. Simply say thank you and goodbye when you are ready to end the session, and tell them that you were glad to have met them, and will contact them again if you needed to.

I suggest learning a name, or at least a nickname or initials, so you can contact them directly if you don't already have this information. Ask them about what they like, who they are, and their favourite things. Just get to know them as you converse.

This is my method, and something I really love to do. Feel free to try it yourself, and let me know if you have success with it, or if you don't so I may be able to offer ideas or advice.

An extra tip from me is to remember that being nervous is okay, and so is being uncertain. Everyone can be at times, and spirit work is no different. Allow yourself to be awkward, but try your best. Don't force a fake personality, because many spirits can recognize it, or won't understand why you acted different from the first time you met to the next.
