& Today is also International #WorldHumanitarianDay World Humanitarian Day (#WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in #humanitarianservice, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. A few sad & troubling trends to think of this year: 2018 WHD campaign: #NotATarget This World Humanitarian Day we continue to bring attention to the millions of civilians affected by armed conflict every day. People in cities and towns struggle to find food, water, and safe shelter, while fighting drives millions from their homes. Children are recruited and used to fight, and their schools are destroyed. Women are abused and humiliated. As humanitarian workers deliver aid, and medical workers treat the wounded and sick, they are directly targeted, treated as threats, and prevented from bringing relief and care to those in desperate need. The humanitarian concerns described here can’t possibly capture the lives of all those affected by conflict around the world. From people with disabilities, to the elderly, migrants, and journalists, all civilians caught in conflict need to be protected. Join the #NotATarget movement and demand world leaders to do everything in their power to protect all civilians in conflict. P.S On a personal note it's been an interesting year engaging, exploring and applying the use of remote sensing #technologies, such as #satellite and #drone #imagery, as part of #humanitarianoperations. I have focused my time, resources and expertise to manage, design, develop and utilize remote sensing #platforms during both #naturaldisasters and #conflict related #emergencies. With the increasing frequency of #naturaldisasters, #conflicts and #crisis, it has become more urgent and mission critical to apply rapidly evolving technologies and #remotesensing for #humanitarianresponse, and for simplifying the process of analyzing #data from both satellites and from #unmannedAerialVehicles (UAVs) in real-world-situations. There is only so much we can do, we need a change of #politicalwill, responsible/ethical #leadership and the very least of humanity/human decency toward each other
