The thing that hurts most about Keeper is that the whole overpopulation issue- where there’s too many enlightened species and not enough land for all of them- could probably be easily resolved, or at least diffused, if the elves just had smaller houses? Like the characters act like this is some huge mystery that they’ll have to scour to find the solution to, and then go home to their 100 floor mansions with rooms the size of an entire floor of a human‘s house. Like boy I wonder what could help.
honestly the whole structure of the elven world sounds both like a nightmare and paradise at the same time. on the one hand, everyone is so spread out and in completely different places (and time zones, but Shannon's just decided that part isn't important. one of those "I just need you to believe me here to get to the rest of the story" things, which is fine) and taking up so much space in the world, it just seems so inefficient. but on the other hand I don't enjoy being around other people and would absolutely love to live completely isolated and by myself with the people of my choosing
not only would smaller houses be nice, but like...what if they actually lived closer to other people. for the smaller house thing: those rooms are going to waste. i absolutely do not believe that they are being used, they just exist to show off prestige and property and the things you own and have collected over centuries. there's legit just no way a single family of three (as most elven families are) can ever use an entire mansion. it's a waste and I hate them for it. so please can they downsize. and then move closer together. I'm not saying they need to live in like an apartment style situation and share walls, but hey, maybe have a neighbor within idk, the next 50 miles (80km) or something. honestly it's like current locations were decided by randomly throwing darts at a map and everyone ended up as isolated as possible.
the elves: hey the humans are taking up too much space and overpopulating the planet. where are we supposed to go? also the elves: *try and spread out as much as physically possible.*
I would also like to point out that on top of them being unable to comprehend the concept of neighbors, they're not taking advantage of their abilities enough. hello? they have an entire city underwater? is there any reason they can't just...do it again? they could possibly create an entire host of cities underwater, effectively expanding their domain along the entire ocean. The only inconvenient part about this right now would be the transportation, but i think they could figure something out.
Like, the intelligent species are out here claiming to be intelligent yet are limiting themselves to the land.
idk, I just think there's a lot of solutions to this problem that don't involve putting humans in a designated spot on the planet (or space) like the plot of Home or The Mitchells vs the Machines. There's so much more I could say on their blatant flaunting of wealth and how it just...doesn't mean anything at this point anymore and doesn't show superiority but they can't let it go, but I'll stop here for now.
this is an absolutely fascinating insight on the series and how the different species interact, so thank you for sharing the topic!
