Initially, I thought it would be an impossible task to teach Asia and Farida successfully because of the language barrier, but, to my surprise, they were so patient and never gave up on me. We adapted and learned so much from each other. I truly believe I learned more from them then they have learned from me. Even with the language barrier they managed to make me laugh every class, and bring a smile to my face. They came to class everyday eager to learn anything and everything they could, and I am grateful I had the privilege of teaching them. “On our last day in Sop Chem, our incredible guide, Phon, sang a song that showed the gratitude and appreciation for both our cultures meeting. It was a way for us to say say thank you to our amazing students, and a way for them to say goodbye to us in a fun way. It was a classic sing along, which turned out to be much more emotional than the ones we know from our childhood. We all sang together right in front of the school sitting in the grass with all our the teachers and students. “Moira, a friend that I made here, said something that I’ll never forget. We worked on these projects together, built these relationships and had so much fun throughout our time here. All of these friendships and beautiful moments, at their root, are because of something catastrophic. We’re here because an earthquake took homes, lives and important pieces of the culture, like the temples and traditional style homes that were destroyed. But what she said next really made me remember the bigger picture of this thing we call life. That even though what happened in Nepal was heartbreaking, the regrowth process is a painfully beautiful one. No one asked for this to happen and I’m sure if it could have never happened, that would be preferred by everyone. He has added so much value to our program with his connection with the community. When he brings out the guitar in the classroom, there are guaranteed smiles all around. Everyone say hi to trekking extraordinaire and lover of hugs, Dolma! 🤩 . Dolma is a member of the Mundu community, which is the village right next to Langtang! She's so sweet, caring and is always making the volunteers smile and laugh. If you hear someone singing through the Himalayas, it's probably Dolma, she loves to sing! . Having her bright and smiley energy is the perfect supplement for the volunteers when they do the big summit in Langtang. You can catch Dolma pushing you up the summit as a friendly face, a hand to hold and always stocked up with cookies and juice to keep your spirits high as the mountains she hikes! . She also organizes a cultural dinner for our volunteers in Mundu! They get the chance to enjoy a Tibetan meal while staying in a cozy traditional home. Having Dolma's warm & inviting personality on our Tibetan frontier trips assures that every volunteer will walk away with a new friend that they will never forget. .
