it is from jasper’s mother that he received his black hair, massive blue eyes, and most plausibly the 𝐬𝐚𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. only nineteen years old when jasper and his brother were born, lucy was rarely in any condition to actually serve as a caretaker for her children. as far back as he can remember, his mother suffered "spells", days and weeks where she would scarcely move, barely blink, when she was unable to respond to touch or sounds. still, she was left as the boys' primary parent while his father worked (and drank) in the bar, and still, jasper preferred her vastly over his physically abusive father. when she was well, lucy was a loving and childlike parent, and the stretches of time when she was home rather than in the care of the state psychiatric hospital remain some of the best memories of jasper's life even today.
unfortunately, those memories have a strict cap at age eight, when lucy's care became unmanageable at home and she was placed into an assisted living facility on recommendation of the state. he would continue visiting his mother as often as possible as a teenager and young adult after the death of his father at seventeen, though she was frequently unresponsive during these visits. jasper's sense of responsibility for his infirm mother became a 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 between he and his brother and contributed greatly to why the two no longer speak. this became a moot point but a grudge nonetheless when eventually, lucy would contract a secondary infection while fighting the flu and succumb to her illness during the winter of jasper's twenty second year.
