Adding onto the "why did ed use a sword arm" convo it might've also been as simple as being able to extend his reach - kid's tiny, if anyone held him at arm's length he'd just be pinwheeling without managing to contact them so the extra 6 or so inches he gets with the blade are probably worth it to him haha (might also be why when he transmutes his own weapons he goes for spears most times)
OH this is another really good point!! This makes a lot of sense, it helps protect him while also giving him farther range. It reminds me of that one post that goes into depth about Ed’s fighting style and how he uses his legs a lot to get more reach. It’s so cool the amount of thought arakawa put into this!
