In Regards to Hunter nin Masks

So I was browsing the Naruto wiki recently and in several articles I saw the round, flat faced mask first seen worn by Haku referred to as ‘Mist ANBU masks’.

Now that puzzled me. For the years that I’ve been familiar with Naruto, I have always been acting under the assumption that those masks were specifically used by Hunter nin, and by Hunter nin alone, not Mist’s ANBU. Where did I get the idea to begin with?

Oh right, it’s because the masks were the identifying feature of hunter nin. Kakashi instantly recognizes what Haku is impersonating by his mask.

Not only that, but the vast majority of characters we’re seen wearing the masks are either explicitly or implicitly identified as hunter nin. For example:

Haku’s mask is stated to be a hunter nin’s mask.

All of Kakashi’s imagined images/memories of hunter nin include the masks.

Raiga isn’t ever explicitly stated to be a hunter nin, but he states that he was sent out on a mission to find and kill a particular person hiding among civilians. It’s pretty easy to assume he was acting as a hunter nin.

Tsurugi and his crew from Utakata’s filler are explicitly identified as hunter nin. They all wear the masks. They were also sent to either capture Utakata alive or persuade him to return with them peacefully.

The crew sent to retrieve Isobu when it was placed in Rin isn’t ever explicitly stated to be hunter nin, but considering that hunter nin as a whole are trained in retrieval it isn’t implausible to think that it was a hunter nin group that was deployed to intercept and capture Rin during the emergency.

The only character who wears the mask we don’t have any hints either way as to whether he was a hunter nin or not would be, of course, Kushimaru. But I honestly I feel safe assuming that at one point he was indeed a hunter nin.

Of course maybe the mask has been retconned to being the mask of general use Mist ANBU but honestly I refuse to accept that. I’m right, end of story.

tl;dr anyone who wears that style of mask is actually a hunter nin and canon supports this

ps: I know we’re never shown Ao wearing a mask and he indeed was a hunter nin but I believe we’re just shown his face in the flashback for ease of understanding.
