The first manhwa I’ve ever reviewed and this one is by the infamous Hwang Mi Ri. Her works are easy to find in my country, but I don’t know whether this one is already available or not. I rarely check bookstores anyway.
If you are familiar with Hwang Mi Ri’s works, you can imagine her plot in general. A strong heroine who doesn’t hesitate to speak up and stand up for herself and those who are close to her. There’s even bullying issue too. The author has created manhwas involving this issue quite often, right? Like Chunja Chunja something, Idol Shopping, Hot Blooded Women, and so on. And this one isn’t that different from her typical works. But, among her many works, World, Bring it On! has left a deep impression on me.
World, Bring it On! is a story about Hyoyi whose life is quite hard. Her parents left her with her brother in an orphanage and they have to live a hard life after leaving that place. Hyoyi’s lil bro, Hyojae, is a boy with special needs. When they leave the orphanage, they enter the same high school through scholarship and live in a very small rented-house.
In that school, both of them go through the extreme case of bullying. That kind of making me wonder, is that really happened in South K? I mean, that harsh bullying is not only just a fictional thing? I know that some bullying cases are downright frightening and even lead to suicidal attempt or something. But still, I couldn’t imagine having that kind of life in high school.
Alright, on with the review. Even though both of them had it tough at school, they have people who are willing to stay and support them. Hyoyi has a best friend named Jung Eun, while Hyojae has a reliable friend, Dong Hwae, whose nickname is Superman which is bestowed by him due to his heroic act and such. Unfortunately, despite all those supports they’ve received from their close friends, Hyoyi and Hyojae still have uneasy lives #sob.
Then a certain misunderstanding leads Hyoyi to meet our hero, Han Minha. He’s not a prince-like hero with all that gentlemanly acts. Let’s say he’s imperfect in a sense of personality or even something related to his physical being. He’s silent-type character with frightening aura if you cross the line.
Minha has a calculative side that is showing when he wants something from someone, in this case Hyoyi. But in the end, he has a genuine feeling for the girl even though he still acts harsh towards her. After all he just wants her to pay attention to him. He has that jealousy and possessive side as well. That’s pretty interesting to see, you know.
Did I tell you that Minha is not a perfect hero you will easily find in shoujo manga or manhwa? Sure he has looks and money, but there’s something he lacks of….find out more in the manwa, okay? #wink. All in all, both the hero and heroine have many issues to deal with, especially the latter. She has to face many tragic events that have managed to make me cry a lot. Even I still remember the feelings when I remember them.
But I’m going to give you a little hint: someone who is meant so much for Hyoyi is dead due to a certain accident. After that, she has her black moment to the point of trying to commit suicide. Fortunately, someone stops her just in time. Bullying scene is nothing compared to the time when I think about that sad moment and the unfortunate person. It’s as if I could feel her emotions altogether.
Putting the sad moments aside, there are sometimes when I wish for Hyoyi to just shut her mouth. I mean, sure she has guts, but you need to mind more about PTO. It’s sometimes annoying, but yeahh that’s typical Hwang Mi Ri’s heroine, I mean mostly. Not that you can’t stand them…at least they are bearable….in my stance tho.
Ohhh yeah there are three men who are in love with the heroine *such a lucky lady, isn’t she?*. The first is ‘course Minha, followed by the Superman I’ve mentioned above who is in fact Minha’s little brother *from different mother tho*, and the last one is Hyoyi’s and Hyojae’s friend during their orphanage day named Kal Yoo.
Overall, this manhwa is very good. In spite of all those horrible things that happen to the leads and Hyojae, I’m happy that everything goes well in the end. Hyoyi can solve the difficulties that have come her way, including the issue about her parents. In short, she has her happy and sweet ending with a little miracle here and there….not gonna tell about the miracle tho ^^v.
Alrite, on a scale of 1 to 10, I think 9 is pretty good, right? The reasons I don’t give it the perfect score are because…the bullying things are too much for my fragile heart and the fact that someone has to die to make it even more tragic #sigh. Well, that’s needed to create even more heart-wrenching moment. See ya ^^
