Red River: Where Shadows Meet the Sun
This is a fanfiction based on the manga "Anatolia Story" (Red River) by Chie Shinohara. The main character Samantha is an original female character. This story explores an alternate universe where Zannanza and Tito survive, and a mysterious organization intervenes in the ancient world.
Chapter 13: The Mountain Within the Capital
Before dawn, Zannanza rides with Samantha toward Hattusa. The capital blazes with banners and celebration—his brother Kail will be crowned king. From a platform of earth Samantha raises in the city's heart, Zannanza watches the ceremony unfold: Kail in crimson and gold, Yuri radiant beside him, the crowd roaring their new king's name. Joy floods his heart, but grief follows close behind. He is a ghost watching the living celebrate a life he can no longer claim.
When the ceremony ends, Samantha leads him through silent corridors to his father's tomb. There, alone in the darkness, he kneels before the sarcophagus and speaks words meant for no living ear—of guilt, of longing, of the strange woman who pulled him from death. No answer comes, but something in his chest loosens. Outside, Samantha waits without a word. He understands: silence, too, is a way of sharing.
They ride back through the desert night. For the first time, he takes the reins. Her back rests against his chest, the stars vast above. He realizes loneliness is not being alone—it is fearing to face oneself. Dawn will come again. And he is not yet done living.
A king is crowned. A ghost finds his way home. Some things are only beginning.
This work contains:
Violence and bloodshed (canon-typical for Red River/ancient setting)
Themes of death, grief, and trauma
Supernatural/magical elements
Complex emotional dynamics and moral ambiguity
Mild horror-tinged imagery
Nothing explicit, nothing gratuitous—just a story about people (and those who used to be people) finding their way through darkness. Read at your own comfort level.
Additional note: Samantha is an original female character. The story respects the canon while exploring what happens when the dead refuse to stay dead.
