not sure how interesting this might sound but do you have any headcannons about demon physiology and genetics? e.g nero's only part demon, the twins are half demons, trish is a demon etc I'd love to hear them if you do!

This is incredibly interesting and I do have a few! I love having the chance to ruminate over the possibilities of where science and magic could meet, and theorize over how the circumstances around those ideas could culminate into a functional operation. I’ll try to keep this from being an entire essay, so I’m going to filter some thoughts out for the sake of clarity. Anyway, thank you so much for your request. I really appreciate you! P.S. Demon Physiology and Genetics

There are some demons who have the power to shape-shift or take a “second form” to blend in with humans. It’s how quite a few of them have gone through unnoticed to amass cult-like followings, to hunt inconspicuously, and, occasionally, to become a seamless part of the Human Realm.

Side note: Few require “possession” but rather manifest their own form in a way similar to Trish or Sparda. This ability, however, is found typically in higher ranking demons.

While humans and demons are genetically compatible, as we’ve seen, the human blood dilutes demonic energy – or, perhaps, vice versa – which can cause a disconnect between the two sides. Dante, for example, isn’t able to Devil Trigger until he’s 19~ years old, where circumstances allowed Vergil to align the pieces sooner.

This implies, for me, two things:

That demonic energy, being primarily magic-based, requires a level of acceptance in order to open the human mind to advancing a hybrid’s abilities.

That there isn’t a distinguishable demon side and a human side in terms of personality, or even entity. (E.g. “Demon side manifesting a literal voice separate from the human.”) It’s a coexistence of two opposing mindsets. > Humans, typically, are morally aligned in some capacity, where demons by default are driven by instinct.

In the twins, we can see they each favor a “side” and are at odds because of this, but we’ve also come to see that when they accept both halves as equally a part of themselves, they become more powerful. Arguably, the most powerful beings in existence.

An interesting thing to consider.

The further we get from one side, the more unstable the combination. Nero, being approximately 1/4th demon – as DNA doesn’t stack in equal fractions – wasn’t able to Devil Trigger until he was 25~ but prior had triggered slightly due to injuries sustained to his arm, which was likely an anatomical reaction to keep him alive. However, it seems that because he was unaware of his heritage, he was unable to awaken the demonic part of himself any further.

In fact, it’s noteworthy to say that he only triggers after he’s told Vergil is his father. Another form of awareness and acceptance?

I also find it worth mentioning that the twins demonic forms more closely resemble Sparda in how humanoid they are. Nero’s is far more humanoid, aligning closer to his human heritage.

A few additional details:

I subscribe to the idea that demons run hotter due to an adaptation from their climate (Hell) but are less affected by the cold, for example. Along that thought, demons also have better hypothalamic regulation, giving them superior control over energy distribution and maintenance in the body. They require less sleep and less water, and can go survive far longer without food than a human.

Likewise, due to their superior healing, they are not susceptible to human illness. Dante and Vergil seldom get sick, if at all, and Nero gets over colds/the flu much quicker than an average human.
