Wishlist - Sony DSC-HX9V

HD영상 촬영을 위해서 파나소닉의 GH1 구입을 고려했었습니다. 확실히 GH2나 오두막을 위시한 vdslr들은 지나치게 비싼 느낌이고 그렇다고 소니의 CX시리즈나 파나소닉의 tm시리즈는 절대, slr들 보다 더 들고다니지 않을 것이 분명했기 때문에 완전한 업무용으로 구입을 하게 되면 모를까 그렇지 않다면 구입의 메리트가 없다고 결론 내렸습니다. 

그런 이유로 최종결정한 제품이 HX9V 입니다. 컴팩트 카메라면서도 1080 60p의 풀HD 촬영이 가능한 모델입니다.

위 영상은 비메오에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 HX9V의 영상 중 하나입니다. 비메오에서 특히 HX9V의 테스트영상들을 많이 찾아 볼 수 있더군요. 어쨌든, 테스트영상들로만 본다면 오두막 이하의 초중급 vdslr이나 CX560정도 까지는 충분히 잡을 수 있을만한 성능을 보여주더군요. 물론 컴팩트라 수동기능에 한계가 있어서 영상을 촬영하는 중에 포커스를 자유롭게 이동시키는 것은 어렵습니다. 따라서 vdslr등으로 촬영되는 포커스를 이용하는 촬영은 힘들지만 HX9V의 결과물로도 충분히 다큐멘터리도 찍을 수 있을만큼의 품질이 되는 것 같습니다. 

신품 40만원대, 중고 30만원 중후반대의 가격으로 이정도의 품질은 아직까지는 구현하기 쉽지 않다고 생각됩니다. 소니가 몇해 전 부터 꽤 좋은 모델들을 출시해오고 있는데 HX9V에서 컴팩트 카메라의 최종판을 보여주는 듯 합니다. 

이미 스마트폰으로도 HD영상을 촬영할 수 있는 시대이기는 하지만 컴팩트로 이정도의 품질을 보여주는 것 또한 나름의 의미는 있다고 보여집니다. 뭐... 이러다가 아이폰5에서 1080 24p라도 촬영 가능해 진다면 상당히 애매해 지는 상황이 되어버리긴 하지만요 ㅎ

New camera - Sony Cybershot HX9V

I'm not a very good photographer and only know the absolute basics.  My philosophy is to take as many photos as possible in the hope that at least some will turn out well!  However, I've decided to invest in a new digital camera for my JMT trip.  My old compact (Samsung M310W) has lasted for a few years now and has taken some good photos, but I feel that it wouldn't really be able to do justice capturing a once in a life time trip such as the JMT.  After much deliberation and reading of reviews, I opted for the Sony Cybershot HX9V.  The HX9V is middle of the range digital compact and is regarded as a good all rounder.  The essential criteria I set myself when buying the new camera were: the ability to take better quality pictures than the Samsung (obvious), take HD video, take panorama shots, have a reasonable zoom, and ideally be lightweight.  The HX9V meets all of these criteria and is quite reasonably priced at the moment because of the introduction of the HX10v.  The HX10v is very similar in features but is more expensive with discussions on the web saying the upgrade is not significant and probably not worth the extra money at the moment.

Out of the box the camera weighs 246g without a case.  It has a number of different modes that can be controlled using the dial on top of the camera.  Tweaking of these modes can be done through the menu system so pretty much the same as any other digital compact.  The modes are:

Program auto - auto exposure with adjustable settings

Superior auto - automatic reduction of blur and noise

Intelligent auto - Exposure adjustment with automatic settings

Background defocus - blurs the background

Scene - allows you to choose from a range of preset settings depending on the subject and environment

3D - shoots 3D photos

Movie - changeable between MP4 and AVCHD at different resolutions (1080p, 720p, VGA).

Sweep Panorama - for panoramic shots

Memory recall mode - not sure about this yet!

Manual mode - where you can freely adjust shutter speed and aperture value.

Burst mode - takes multiple shots very quickly

I was pleased with it's performance on a recent Beinn Bhuidhe trip and the difference in quality between my old camera and this was clear.  The one thing that stood out above all other things though is the zoom.  It has 16x stabilised optical zoom lens which works very well indeed.  Here is short example of the zoom used in movie mode.  The video was taken when on the summit of Beinn Bhuidhe.  The camera has a wind reduction algorithm which was not activated when recording this clip.  Note: YouTube defaults to 360p for video playback quality so it would be worth changing this to 1080p.

So that's my new camera, I've still got loads to try and understand about the settings and photography in order to try and improve my shots.  So far, I've been finding the series of videos by Graham Houghton useful.
