‘do you remember?’ voice drawled, more than usual; strained. chest heaved, every breath followed a hoarse wheeze. seemed that he was about to punch in his ticket & death had been more than patient. even in this state, when he was drowning in pain, feeling life slip from him, he smiled as if all was going to be okay. he was trying to recall the time they had first met, she probably didn’t remember much but he remembered clearly. /to Ninafrom soft angst starters, let’s suffer, have a dying nic :)

         When his brows arched, hers furrowed. He was a taciturn man, and not without reason, so when it came time for him to speak like this, he certainly couldn’t have minced words. “Don’t repeat it. You make me sound like a dummy.” Her fingers crossed. “It’s really sinister, okay? It’s totally sinister.” How well could he read lips? If she launched into a full tirade, would he keep up? She rolled her eyes. Her arms alternated between crossing and resting with her fists on her hips. Her lips puckered as she tapped her toe. There had to be an elegant way to say it.

        “It’s the sample people.” Cherry huffed. “They’re so insidious!”

        She locked eyes with him to make sure he was on the same wavelength. “See, it starts off real simple, right? Why not try a bite of the product? It’s there for the tasting! It’s free real estate—there’s no law saying you can’t walk off with every sample on the tray! But it is frowned upon. That’s not the point.”

       A thumb and forefinger pinched between her brows. “Anyway, it’s a trap. You think you’re home free, so slick, got to try a new product, or maybe even a food you already like and you just wanted another taste. But it’s no good at that point, no sir! They got you hooked. You’re in their domain now. Any power you had is gone. G-O-N-E. Those sample people, they’re a smart bunch. They know you’re human and that you’re capable of feeling guilt. That’s what they bank on.” She waggled a finger.

       “Now that you ate something, you gotta buy something or else you look bad. No one wants to be the ass that stands there munching samples and asks about the product, then just walks off. That’s a surefire way to make the workers hate you. And you know what happens if they hate you, right? The news, it spreads. Soon enough, that cashier you were so buddy-buddy with, the one that occasionally gives you coupons or hooks you up with discounts, she decides that you’re above all that. Surely you’ve got money, you can pay full price. Why not, right? You saved all that money not buying samples. So now you’ve lost your insider! You’re just like any other customer—you got nothing.” Even if he can’t hear her tone of voice, it’s clear from her posture and the red tint to her skin that she’s ready to blow up.

      “That’s why these sample ladies and sample gents are so sinister. You think you’re getting away with stealing, but really you’re destroying the web of connections you made around the market. So that’s why we don’t eat samples. Got it, Nic?”

Thoughts twisting and the cogwheels in his mind churning, his features weren’t that of peaceful yet neither carried his constance of negativity either. Onyx eyes dazed, he probably wouldn’t of even noticed had something been mere inches away from his face– they were glossy and had a distant look to them, as if he was dancing in another realm.Unexpecting of the gruff tone that scratched at his ears, eyelids blinking several times before Ray’s head snapped towards the older man. Despite a small frown tugging at his lips, it still wasn’t near the same kind of displeasure he’d usually sport. Good?

“Just.. wishful thinking.” He muttered before bringing a hand up to wipe at his forehead, ultimately brushing the long strands of hair that covers nearly the whole left side of his face. It was a quiet time– yet THINKING was dangerous and not something the likes of them could really enjoy much of. “Nicolas.” The boy stated, using the others’ name to gain attention, albeit unnecessarily so. “Is there anything you WISHED to do before your time is up?”Although he didn’t act like it a good chunk of the time, Ray was still but a child — a teenager. Yet, the ever flooding thought of DEATH was imminent and something that plagued his mind, being someone who had a shorter lifespan than regulars. His mind soon turning sour and his typical scowl placed forward instead as he rose up and gave Nico a small bump to the gut with his elbow. “Nevermind, that was a stupid question.”

    she’s been silently tailing this man for a little while now. The smell of food , whatever he was carrying , smelled good. To rely on her nose , that was her whole means for survival. Truthfully , there was no reason not to follow him , and maybe that was just because she was hungry. Whatever was in that garbage she was picking through before she picked up the scent , turned up empty. The first thing she realizes was this man was tall , and people didn’t walk near him. 

it’s before he turns a corner , that’s when small now clawed hands try to grab that good smelling bag.
