A Small Biz Saturday Guide to Hyattsville

I had been planning to make a “hey, if you’re local you should stop by my brick-and-mortar this Saturday!” post. But I decided to expand its scope a bit, because I am lucky to have my store in a neighborhood full of awesome independent businesses, and when you add us all up I feel like there’s a pretty compelling case for hanging out here. 

So if you’re in the DC area, and you haven’t made your post-turkey shopping plans yet, please consider the following:

First of all, I’m the owner of Suffragette City Vintage. We have vintage clothing, jewelry, and accessories for all genders from the 1880s to the 1980s, and we have plus-size options up to at least a modern 18-20. I also have a smaller selection of vintage home goods, art, and ephemera, and my own handmade assemblage jewelry.

I share my storefront with two other businesses: 

Tanglewood Works offers handmade and fair trade goods, beautiful painted furniture, and supplies and kits for DIY projects. My Dead Aunt’s Books is a used bookstore with a pretty deep SF section, and they have vinyl records too. We’re at 5132 Baltimore Ave, right in the middle of the Hyattsville Arts District.

Also, our building looks cool.

We have great neighbors. Three Little Birds Sewing Co. is a fabric store with tons of beautiful prints. Every time I go in there I have to physically restrain myself from buying dinosaur-print fabric, because I am not good enough at sewing to make the Miss Frizzle dress of my heart. They offer sewing classes, so I could fix that, but tbh I have enough hobbies already.

Sangfroid Distilling is our other next-door neighbor. They make whiskey, Dutch-style gin, and fruit brandies from locally sourced ingredients.

Across the street, Franklin’s has been the neighborhood anchor for like 20 years. They’re a brewpub where I have never had a bad meal (please get the onion rings, they are giant and dusted with Old Bay and I don’t even like onions), and they also have a store that sells beer & wine, novelties, and toys. Including board games! Apparently there is a Game of Thrones version of Settlers of Catan, and I only know this because they have it.

Streetcar82 Brewing Co. and Maryland Meadworks are also within walking distance, although I feel like by the end of that circuit you might have trouble walking in a straight line.

Some more of our neighbors:

Pyramid Atlantic is a nonprofit art center for printmaking, papermaking and book arts. They have a shop with work from local artists, studios, and galleries.

Arrow Bicycle is our friendly local bike shop.

Artist & Craftsman Supply is an employee-owned art supply store and an active danger to my budget.

Cookie Wear has lots of nerdy pop-culture gifts and accessories, and fun fashion and home goods.

Vigilante Coffee makes our whole block smell good on an ongoing basis, which I appreciate.

Green Owl Design has locally made, carefully curated home goods, jewelry, clothing and accessories.

This just covers the businesses within about a half-mile radius of my own shop (and most of them are within a couple of blocks) but there’s a more comprehensive guide to the Route 1 corridor here.

I know a lot of folks in DC and Virginia have a hard time getting out to Maryland, and I get it: the distance feels far, even though we’re only two miles from the DC line, and I’m totally guilty of treating the Potomac River like it’s made of lava. But if you can make the trip, I promise you’ll have an awesome time.
