So, Mimpy and Son of Crom on the gamemaker discord have been incredibly helpful, and because of them, I'm now able to set flags in dialogue!!!!!!!
This is a huge game-changer for me, because it means I can ACTUALLY TRUFAX have choices that change something other than what the characters say to each other!
Things like "locked doors that unlock if you have the key", "changing the music mid-conversation", or best of all, "MULTIPLE ENDINGS THAT AREN'T HACKY AND BAD".
My school game has effectively become a jam game because I'm bad at time management. Thankfully... I'm very, very good at crunch. I don't like it, but I'm good at it.

"Funny" glitch from Hydeaway dev yesterday.
Text in GameMaker 2 is apparently inordinately hard to wrangle. As are collisions. And coding. And everything else.
If I win the game lottery I am hiring someone else to do all my coding, so help me gods.
I'm making some good progress on Hydeaway-- my student project, a Jekyll-and-Hyde horror adventure game-- but I'm still a wee bit behind, and I have to work on Bright Young Things to boot.
Apparently, Gamemaker hates erasing text once you've put it on the screen. Who knew?
The struggle is eternal. But I love this game and want to make it happen as well as I can.
