The Hyde Street Pier at San Francisco’s National Maritime National Park bears the signage of US Route 101 because before the Gold Gate Bridge opened the way that the fledging automobiles got from San Francisco to town of Sausalito in Marin County across the San Francisco Bay was via ferryboat, thus the ferry was literally part o the Route 101 and Route 40. When I was at the Maritime Museum that my sweet west coast damsel had taken me to in February after visiting and boarding the historic vessels on the way out, we stopped at the ferry pier because being raised in New Jersey just across from New York City and loving history, I have always been fascinated by the many ferries that connected New Jersey and the outer boroughs with the island of Manhattan. The Hyde Street Pier was preserved and literally the center of the Maritime Museum. We ventured across through the pier portal and boarded the Eureka 1890 Steam Paddlewheel Ferry which can be seen in this image I captured on that day dear west coast damsel that originally carried trains but after World War I was retrofitted to become a passenger and automobile ferry. There a twin ferry slip to the east or left of this slip which I saw in the Maritime Museum located across the street which took automobiles to Berkley that obviously is no longer there.
