As is tradition, we always end the month with the horse prompt. Here, I have combined one with a hydnora, a parasitic plant. What a majestic and cursed beast!

Do you know what kind of bug lands on a water flower to drink nectar, gets trapped inside it all day, then comes out when the flower opens up at night? I saw it on a nature documentary once and I can’t remember what kind of bug it was.

I don't know the specific bug or plant, but pollination traps have evolved quite a few times!

Hydnora africana, De Doorns | ヒドノラ・アフリカナ

E. mauritanica に寄生するというのは本当だった（Euphorbia Journal Ⅰ, 47）。

異臭をたどって発見。したというわけではなく、ものすごく目立っていたから。「わたしを食べて」と言わんばかりの赤。

アフリカーンスでJakkalskos、つまりジャッカルフードとも呼ばれる。Joseph SimcoxのBIZARRE EDIBLE PLANTSでエディブルと知っていたものの、食べるべきか逡巡。どこから食べるか黙考。結局、味を想像。日暮れが近くて急いでいたし・・。

帰国後、果実は地中に成り、動物たちは掘り出して食すと知った。わざわざ掘ってまで食べたいなんてよほど美味しいに違いない。

Hydnora africana

According to some, this plant is also known as ‘Gidnora’, however when I try to search the term, I can’t find any official literature, just pictures. There is only one species in this genus.

Also- not a mushroom. It’s a parasitic plant. And it produces a fruit that apparently tastes like a potato.

EDIT: I have been bamboozled! Actually jk I’m just a ding dong, but friendly neighborhood botanist TreeMigration was kind enough to point it out. Hydnora africana is NOT monotypic, and actually has several equally weird related species. Please check out his write-up here.

Hydnora hydnora africana

A parasitic plant that leeches off other plants from the roots and grows underground besides the flower that releases a feces-like smell to attract beetles and traps them inside (not killing them) and releases them once the flower has matured. It grows in the southern parts of Africa.
