A new German development surprises with its innovation in hydroelectric energy: it is the cableKites technology, which harnesses the power of the sea.

This is a power generation system based on underwater “kites” that converts water currents into clean energy without the need for dams.

The model mimics the operation of a ski lift, although in reverse.

The prototype was designed by researchers from the Hochschule München together with the Technical University of Munich and the company Enrope GmbH.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three hydro-electric projects in Himachal Pradesh

India adds 1,732 MW of hydro-power capacity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three hydro-electric projects in Himachal Pradesh, representing 1,732 MW of generating capacity, to the nation today.

The biggest of the three is NTPC’s Koldam, which has four generating units of 200 MW each. The second biggest was Parbati Stage-III, which comprises 4 units of 130 MW each and is operated by NHPC. The third one, Rampur hydro-electric project, has 6 units of 68.67 MW each and is operated by SJVN.

All were built with generating equipment supplied and commissioned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

The generation from Hydro projects results in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and helps in achieving a low carbon path.

The Government is contemplating inclusion of Large Hydro Projects in the fold of Renewable Energy to provide an impetus to these projects.

BHEL having an experience in hydro electric projects, have contracted more than 500 hydro generating sets with a cumulative capacity of more than 29,000 MW of various ratings in India and abroad.

BHEL’s hydro installations are working in India and across the world including Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Malaysia, Nepal, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Rwanda and Vietnam.

The company is presently executing Hydro Electric Projects of around 3,300 MW in the country which are under various stages of implementation, in addition to major hydro power projects in DR Congo and Bhutan.
