Day 126#: Hydrotherosaurus alexandrae

Today's animal of the day is Hydrotherosaurus alexandrae!

This species of plesiosaur lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now California. Its species name means "fisherman lizard", while its species name honors famous naturalist, paleontologist, and philanthropist Annie Montage Alexander. Hydrotherosaurus was around 26 ft long and had the longest neck to body ratio amongst the other members of Elasmosauridae. Like its relatives, it is thought that Hydrotherosaurus was an active pursuit predator that used its long neck and small head to make it seem much less threatening to its prey, so it could more easily sneak up on schools of fish and capture prey using its mouth full of sharp, needle-like teeth.

I’ve been itching to redraw an old piece I made in 2013. It was an idea that didn’t seem to want to leave my head. I lacked the skills at the time, but I’m so happy that I was finally able to create this image as I had originally imagined it. This is my imagination, my world, and my creation! I’m so happy.
