Some Observations about Episode 1 & 2
Okay, so, I rewatched episodes 1 and 2 of Beatbreak to see what is actually going on with dear Asuka. And oh boy, I have observations. And a theory: Asuka did cause Gekkomon to appear.
And also: someone - possibly Genjo - put the Hyemon on the two brothers' tail.
Let me go through it.
First off, there is a noticable thing in episode 1. Episode 1 of course actually starts with Glowing Dawn fighting Fanbeemon/Waspmon, but Kyo is not there and only comes in last minute to safe the day. When Reina asks where Kyo has been, Kyo goes: "Oh, I was hungry, I just got something to eat."
Given our knowledge of later episodes one could assume that he was with the baby Digimon, but I do not think so actually. Because those "disappearances" of him were announced and Reina and Makoto knew "oh, Kyo is gonna be away for two days, he does that every other week". And here it was just him being "late". And this is almost instantly paralleled.
We go after this into the normal world, and to Tomoro. Something noticable here is: we get almost directly the information that the Sapotama 16 is out. And the first two episodes do draw a ton of attention to this. We see several advertisements and even dialogue about it. That definitely has to do with the Digimon in some way.
But yeah, we go to Tomoro, who accidentally catches Hitomi's Sapotama, and how it glitches afterwards. Then Tomoro gets home and here is the next interesting thing: Asuka has put a note onto the fridge saying he is home late, and for Tomoro to eat his veggies. The story also puts emphasis on the fact that Asuka misspells broccoli. Whatever that might mean.
We then get a quick view of the picture of Tomoro's family, and the information that Tomoro lives with Asuka. Then there is fade to black and then... we see Asuka coming home and waking Tomoro, who has fallen asleep on the kitchen table, his own Sapotama being on the table.
Then Asuka leaves, telling Tomoro to stay inside, no matter what happens. And here Asuka clearly knows that someone is after them - and from the scene later we know that he is very aware of the Digimon. We also learn that Hitomi is in hospital with Cold Heart, which Tomoro almost instantly relates to him having caused it with his e-Pulse.
Obviously as Tomoro is alone, Gekkomon appears.
It should be noted that during this scene we also see Tomoro's e-Pulse for a short moment circling through several iterations. And one of those is actually surprisingly quite even.
Obviously, Gekkomon first sucking Tomoro's e-Pulse, then swallowing the Sapotama and then running away, leading Tomoro to follow them, despite what Asuka had said. But he does not get far as almost instantly one of the Hyemon is waiting for him. And the Hyemon makes it quite clear they had been looking for him, trying to find him by his scent. Tomoro flees, and Gekkomon tries - so far unsuccessfully - to protect him.
And then, obviously, Asuka appears, trying to save Tomoro. And here there is the other interesting thing: Asuka tells Tomoro that the Hyemon are Digimon, and says he will explain later.
Obviously the flight does not go anywhere, as one of the Hyemon bites Asuka and gives him Cold Heart, before Asuka falls down.
Notable are the two things he says here. First: "Digimon are too strong for humans to fight." This feels so much like a setup for something. And then: "Your e-Pulse will shake the world."
Obviously after this the actual fight happens. It should be noted that indeed it is clear from the dialogue that even Reina and Makoto were very much informed here who Tomoro was, and that they were here trying to save him and fetch him. And they do recognize Asuka, when they find his comatose body, meaning the two have at least seen a picture of him.
There is however something noticable about how Asuka is found. And this is something that I have not seen anyone yet talk about. Before, when Asuka falls, he falls into water. We see a clear splash and generally the ground floor of this old shopping mall was covered in water. However, as Reina and Makoto find Asuka, his hair is clearly wet, but there is no longer water covering the ground.
Originally I thought the water on the ground was just related to the general flooding. But rewatching the episode... No, there is something else going on. It also was clearly not an animation error/animation inconsistency, because... otherwise they would not have drawn Asuka's hair dripping with water.
Obviously then there is the fight. The show draws attention to how Gekkomon's words mirror Asuka's last words (like, it shows us a flashback, despite the scene with Asuka being just 4 minutes ago, so this is clearly gonna be important) of Tomoro's pulse shaking the world. And then the fight starts, with Gekkomon wrecking the Hyemon until the second Hyemon appears.
And there is a very interesting thing in when the Hyemon speaks. One goes: "I do not remember the people I ate." The other goes: "I do. The last one was called Hitomi." With us getting a flashback. And there is something other interesting. We see a Sapotama fall to the ground as Hitomi faints. And that Sapotama is green.
It does not quite look like the faked Sapotama in episode 9/10, but... After defeating Fangmon in episode 3, the gorup returns Hitomi's Sapotama to her and iwth that cures her Cold Heart. So... What Sapotama is this one here? Is it a plant (presumably by Genjo)? Is it just an animation error?
Either way. Obviously the fight switches when Gokuwmon appears and kills the one Hyemon, stealing its Sapotama.
At this Gekkomon wants to attack Gokuwmon but is stopped by Kyo, who confirms that he does not know Gokuwmon and tries to reason with them, but Gokuwmon disappears, to which Kyo prioritizes saving Tomoro rather than following Gokuwmon.
So, here is the things I am thinking about right now:
What is up with the Sapotama that falls down as Hitomi is sucked dry by Hyemon? Because green, and also because it is clearly not hers.
What was Asuka doing before he returned home in episode 1? He comes home and directly draws attention to the Hitomi situation, as if he knows more about what is going on there. As if he has some clear understanding of that situation. And that is quite suspicious, isn't it?
When Kyo was late, was he meeting up with Asuka because of whatever was going on?
Who does Hyemon belong to? Because the two of them were almost certainly sent by Genjo from what we know now?
What the hell is even up with Genjo? Why does Kyo not know Gokuwmon? Since when does Genjo fill the position of Gold Star?
Why is Gokuwmon after this specific Sapotama? Is Genjo after Asuka's e-Pulse specifically? If so, why?
What does the release of the new edition of the Sapotama have to do with all of this?
I lov you hyemon, fucked up what you did to that kids brother tho
Hyemon
Level: Rookie/Child
Type: Beast
Attribute:
.Curse Bite
・Release Howling
Profile
A Beast Digimon with sharp fangs and claws. It boasts a large, powerful physique, unusual for most Rookie Digimon. Hyemon tend to live in groups, and many hunt in packs to secure food efficiently. They relentlessly pursue their prey using their cunning and high stamina, making packs of Hyemon highly effective hunters. A Hyemon's jaw is so powerful it is able to chew and consume things even as hard as metal. One of its special moves is Curse Bite, a gnawing attack that makes use of its powerful jaws and sharp fangs. And when using Release Howling, a Hyemon lets out a ferocious roar that temporarily heightens the physical abilities of nearby Hyemon. This means that a pack howling in unison will amplify the effect and grant them enormous power.
Digimon Beatbreak Episode 2 Review - Quit Your Job And Join My Band Of Fugitives
This episode destroys a lot of my theories that I concocted in the previous episode and I’m fine with that. The best part about storytelling is when things don’t go the way you expect. I also love forming new theories as a story goes, so I’m fine if things don’t go how I thought it’d be. It’d be boring to be able to get every prediction correct, after all. This episode is a bit slower in pacing due to all the world building, but it’s fine because it actually explains a lot without giving out too much. The main three focuses are Cold Heart, Cleaners, and how Digimon are formed.
