The Trouble Remains

Ah, as you might notice, I am super hesitant of posting this stuff, even though I know I really gotta, because yeah. Troubles.

As noted a month ago, I (trans, disabled) still have issues with my money. Basically it is just a bunch of stuff coming together.

Basically I always had a "backup penny", but then I lost two wages last year due to being hospitalized for two months. Then I had trouble with my then-roommate, who to this day owes me 1300€. Then my laptop broke and I needed a new one earlier this year. And now... Well, I am through all backup money and stuff. I had to borrow money from my new roommate to pay for the next semester of university. And... yeah, I just need help.

AAAAAAALSO... it is my birthday today. So, yeah.

It still keeps the issue that if you judge and punish someone you say that violence in some form is permitteable. Because robbing someone of their freedom is violence. Like, punishment also does not make things better at large. It does not stop people from d9ing stuff and usually does not help the victim of violence. What helps victims more is to have their pain acknowledged by both the perpetrator and their community at large.

Like. There has been a study done specifically on rape victims (given that sexual violence sadly goes very rarely into actual charges right now) and for a lot of victims it was found that going through arbitration was actually more helpful than having the perpetrator punished.

A system does not resolve disputes. People do. Having a specific class of people who have always the final say in disputes and hence hold power over everyone else will make the system vulnerable to exploitation and tyranny.

Solar punk is just an aesthetic, nothing more and nothing less, but I think the way people react to it is an important case study on how we construct revolution.

Those who show uncritical support with little material or theoretical backing end up spiralling into green capitalism, or an individualist dream of self sustenance.

Those who rail so hard against it end up showing their belief on revolution is not only unimaginative but complicit in the thinking of how modern states and capital are organised.

Though the anti SP argument there is often the fetishisation of "violent revolution", calling solar punk a weak, passive, unable to defend itself and unrealistic. I agree revolution is inherently violent, it is self defence from those who oppress us, but the fetishisation of violence, the executions, the machismo, is of course a dangerous path to go down. A path that centres retribution instead of building. A path that is perfect for oppertunism (look at crimethInk's Against the Logic of the Guillotine).

Revolution is just as much about prefiguration as it is about violence. Making your whole political perspective around this gritty "your just too unrealistic" capitalist-realist bullshit is embarrassing. its antithetical to true revolutionary action, why be a revolutionary if you don't even want something better?

A synthesis of solar punk and anarchism can be made. Ecology must be a central fight in anarchism, that imagination of a better future gives us something to fight for and to not recreate the same systems we're trying to destroy.

Honestly, the people who hate solar punk are the same people who babel on about "pragmatism", it's a thought terminating cliché, destined to reinforce systems of oppression. Not to say that solar punk is this important revolutionary idea, its just the example I'd like to use. If you don’t have imagination for a better future, then what the fuck are you doing?

It is not an aesthetic. It is a literary genre and movement that at some point as a word got assigned by tumblr people to a specific aesthetic, but that is not how it started out and it is not the core of it. The term has literally been appropriated by tumblrites to describe an aesthetic, and now tumblrites like you try to claim that this is the meaning of the term and has been all along. Which it was not. Stop spreading misinformation.

I mean, if anything, the Solarpunk manifesto is very fucking easy to find online. That one was made later than the term originated, but if you actually track down the use of the term before it it was also not used for the aesthetic.

The aesthetic association comes from a now defunct tumblr gimmick blog from the early 2010s.

Let's do this quickly again: yes, rainbow capitalism sucks because all capitalism sucks, and most companies who between about 2014 and 2023 did do their little icon changes and sold you some cheap rainbow themed apparel, while still obviously being shitty towards queer employees and what not, were hypocritical and what not.

BUT...

It is still not good that this has been happening less and less over the least three years, and people should be upset about this, because it is scary.

The companies who did their annual one months of rainbow logos did not do it largely for queer people. They did it because with it they were signaling to the society that they were good companies. And it was seen by society at large as a good thing to change your logos to rainbows during pride, because supporting queer people was seen as a good thing by a majority of people.

The fact that many of the companies are no longer doing it is an indicator that now it is seen as a negative by a majority of people to support queer folks. And that is very, very scary, and is a signal of how much Epstein and his ilk had managed to use the culture war to flip people against minorities. (And yes, a lot of this is indeed to be traced back to Epstein and his ilk as we now know from the emails.)

And before someone goes "well, actually" here: yes, I am aware a lot of the people who before saw this positive also were very performative in it, and often would be callous about queer folks. BUT it is still better than the outright hostility that is getting normalized now once more.

I am wondering... If we have different levels of tolerance for different kinds of media when it comes to all these discussions around dark fiction.

Would the same standards we apply to fanfiction be applied to published books? What about animation? What about movies? Series and tv shows?

Because I feel like fanfiction holds a specific place in this genre, where people write and read what they like and go searching for the same... It is kind of bound within the fandom space and fictional world, and most level headed people would never try to connect it to reality. As I see it, fanfiction is the most contained of media for the freakiest of thoughts.

But I kinda wonder if it escapes that containment the farther you go. Books and movies have been critical to both shaping society and reflecting it... which is why we fight so hard for queer representation in the media in the first place... because somewhere along that scale things have more impact on the real world than simply being "fiction".

Idk if I'm making any sense btw. Just have a lot of thoughts about the perception of taboo and dark topics in fiction. What are your thoughts? Do you think the same rules of "don't like don't read" "thought crimes are not real" also apply to other forms of media? Would a movie involving a questionable age gap/underage sex etc. weigh equally to a fic in terms of morality?

personally I don’t care if it’s fanfics or published books or movies. fiction is fiction. period. I don’t care how taboo or graphic or messed up or morally wrong a movie or a book is, if it’s fiction then it’s just harmless fantasy.

it’s the audiences’ job to separate fiction from reality, it’s parents’ job to teach their kids that bad things can be glorified and/or romanticized in fiction because it’s fiction.

I also will once more note that all those people complaining about "dark fiction", somehow do not complain about any fiction where the main driver of everything is to injure and murder a lot of people - which tends to be the majority of big name stuff released today. Because action, crime, mystery, adventure etc. are all genre that focus their plot largely on violence - and other than most dark ficiton people complain about - actually do idealize it and support it as the main solution to a bunch of different situations.

The reason puritans are up in arms about sexuality related stuff is just that they are puritans and want to make people suffer for being sexual - especially if the sexual people are women or queer.
