The bright light of the morning sun seeped through the blinds as you slept comfortably, causing you to twitch in your sleep. Groaning at the sudden intrusion of light, you rolled around, pulling the comforter over your head before a certain noise caught your attention. The faint sound of laughter from below awoke you from your somnolent state. You knew it wasn’t a school day so who the hell was at your house this early in the morning? Reaching for your phone by your bedside, you unplugged it from the charger, checking the time.
8:12 am.
“You have 5 notifications from ‘jju🐢’”
[7:28 am]
jju🐢: hey i’m coming over in a bit, your mom invited me for breakfast again lol
[7:36 am]
jju🐢: im otw to ur house now
Jju: no way youre still not awake yet
[7:43 am]
jju🐢: your mom let me in
jju🐢: come down when you wake up loser
The soft patter of your footsteps alerted your mom and juhoon of your presence as you walked into the kitchen, settling yourself into a seat at the kitchen island.
“Wow, good morning sleeping beauty,” he grinned. “Nice hair by the way.”
“Shut up,” you responded, rolling your eyes. “It takes a lot of work to look this good in the morning.” to which Juhoon snickered at your response. “Righttt.”
“Good morning my love,” your mom greeted you with a smile. “I wanted to invite Juhoon over for breakfast before I headed off to work as a thank you for putting up with you all the time. He’s such a sweet boy, isn’t he?” she teased playfully and you couldn’t help but groan as Juhoon laughed at your discontent.
“I’m just kidding. Here is your plate,” she said before sliding it over, “Don’t forget to do the dishes later, I’m heading off now. Make sure you take care of Juhoon, treat him like a guest!” Her voice retreated throughout the house before the slamming of a door notified you of her absence.
“Guess it’s just me and you now. Wanna hang out today?” he asked as you mindlessly picked up a piece of egg off your plate.
You shrugged, “Yeah we could, I don’t think I’m doing anything today.” you said before a sudden ding! from your phone caught your attention. Grabbing your phone, you started to respond, unbeknownst to you Juhoon had also caught who the text came from.
“You have 1 notification from ‘hyeon🤍’”
[8:47 am]
hyeon🤍: hey r u doing anything today? wanna see you
You: hii i was gonna hang out with juhoon today ! do you want to come ?
hyeon🤍: sure. see you in 30
“I’m gonna go get ready, seonghyeon’s coming with us too.” you said as you brought your plate to the sink.
“You’re still talking to him? I thought you said you didn’t like the mixed signals.” he questioned.
You paused momentarily, slightly caught off guard at the question.
Somewhere along the way, the line between friendship and romantic partners had blurred between the two of you, yet neither you or seonghyeon ever made the acknowledgement to correct it or set boundaries. You were his, and he was yours, exclusively, and no labels made it seem like less of a commitment, less serious.
“I don’t but–whatever, I’m just going to get ready. I’ll be quick, you can watch netflix if you want, you know where the remote is!” and with that you rushed upstairs.
Juhoon watched you go up the stairs before letting out a sigh, resting his elbows on the counter and dropping his head in hands.
Juhoon has liked you for as long as he could remember, dating back to the day you two first met.
It was the first day of Kindergarten and you had just been dropped off, hair done, wearing a sparkly pink dress, and carrying a princess Aurora backpack that was way too big for you.
While all the other kids were crying out for their parents, Juhoon being one of them, you went out of your way to comfort him before even introducing yourself. He cried in your arms for a solid 5 minutes while you reassured him that it would be okay and gave him gentle pats on the back.
Out of embarrassment Juhoon avoided you for the next couple of days, but you were persistent, greeting him every morning, sitting next to him at lunch, and inviting him to play at recess. Since then, Juhoon has always been by your side, your classmates knew you guys as one, always asking where the other one was if not present.
He was there for your first heartbreak back in middle school when you had been rejected by your crush. Seeing how much a silly boy had affected you, he stuck around the whole time and provided a shoulder for you to cry on when you needed and bought you endless snacks to help with the healing process, claiming that boys were “stupid” and that it would be his loss.
He was there for your first F in school when you were struggling with chemistry. Knowing how much you prided yourself in academics, Juhoon would come over and stay late hours after school to help tutor you, putting aside his own work to make sure you understood the content well enough to do the work on your own.
He was there for you when you guys had your first argument. It was stupid, really. You had stood Juhoon up at a tutoring session to go hang out with a boy and when he confronted you about it, it ended with you heading home crying and a frustrated Juhoon left behind wondering how you out of all people would choose a boy over academics. You guys didn’t talk for three days after the incident and Juhoon decided he had enough of the radio silence so he went to the store and bought a basket full of your favorite snacks and items as a way to apologize to you. (you forgave him immediately.)
Throughout it all, he stayed. He stayed because he loved your caring and outgoing personality. He loved the way you carried yourself, confident yet humble.
He loved the way you laughed with your whole body at something even the slightest bit funny, or how you’d smack him while laughing.
He loved how attentive to detail you were, taking down notes of his interests and hobbies because you had the memory of a goldfish.
He loved the way you’d play with your hair or mess with your necklace when you were anxious.
He loved late night walks and conversations with you, even if they were about the stupidest possible thing in mankind or simply being in each other’s presence in silence.
He loved how you would always put everyone first, even at the cost of yourself. You were selfless and always willing to help, that was something Juhoon admired about you a lot.
Over time, Juhoon’s feelings for you grew during those years and it didn’t stop. In fact, his feelings for you developed even further the older you two got. Seeing how you had matured into a beautiful, resilient woman, how could he not fall for you?
Juhoon never built up the courage to confess though, despite the numerous times his friend Martin would encourage him to do so. In his defense, he never really had the opportunity to. You were always either a. crushing on others (to which he had to hear all of unfortunately) or b. preoccupied with yourself in your “boys ain’t shit” phase. It wasn’t like he never thought about it, the timing just never really worked out.
More importantly, Juhoon didn’t want to confess and risk the chance of ruining the bond you guys had created over the years. He didn’t want unrequited feelings to be the reason you two would experience an awkward shift in dynamics. Sure, you guys have had disagreements in the past, but none of them as devastating or serious as this would be. So to play it safe, Juhoon vowed he would never confess his feelings for you unless you did first, even if it meant hurting himself. Martin called him stupid, but he didn’t care because to him, you were home, and it didn’t matter if you didn’t feel the same, all he needed was you.
The sound of your rushed footsteps broke him out of his trance, “Hyeon just texted me,” you said while putting on your coat. “He’s waiting outside. Let’s go.” You said with a grin as you nodded your head towards the door. Juhoon couldn’t help but let out a small smile before following in your footsteps.
The autumn air was cool and smelt of crisp musty leaves. It had been getting colder lately and you were starting to regret wearing such a thin top.
Seonghyeon stood outside, one earbud in his ear, scrolling on his phone before looking up, acknowledging your presence.
“Hi lovey.” he said with a smile, pulling you into a hug before locking eyes with Juhoon.
He cleared his throat, standing up straight again and gave Juhoon a slight nod.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
Seonghyeon turned his attention back to you, “So where do you wanna go?”
“I don’t really feel like doing much today, maybe a walk in the park? We can get food after?”
“Whatever you want beautiful, let’s go.”
Seonghyeon interlaced your fingers together as you guys began to walk, Juhoon positioned himself on your right, causing you to be sandwiched in between the two.
A breeze had brushed by, causing you to shiver slightly, leaving goosebumps on your bare skin. Both of them noticed, of course.
“Are you cold? Here,” Juhoon started to take his jacket off before Seonghyeon cut him off. Removing his jacket just as fast, Seonghyeon didn’t wait for an answer before draping his jacket over you, still warm from his body heat.
“Thank you.” you smiled at seonghyeon and Juhoon watched the whole interaction. Fixing his own jacket, he made eye contact with Seonghyeon who just gave him a slight smirk before continuing to walk, “My clothes always look better on you anyways.”
The walk to the park wasn’t long, and once you had reached your destination, you settled upon a bench. Juhoon sat on your left and Seonghyeon on your right.
For a while, no one had said anything. Occasional breezes passed by and you observed the environment around you, kids running around, people taking strolls and walking their dogs, geese swimming gracefully in the pond.
You sighed, taking it all in, before your olfactory nerves caught the scent of something warm and sweet. Cinnamon and apple cider. You perched up immediately, eyes jumping everywhere to find the source of the smell.
Seonghyeon and Juhoon’s eyes followed you.
Following the smell, your eyes narrowed on a small food vendor selling snacks in the distance.
“Do you guys want to get apple cider? I could really go for something warm right now.”
“I’ll go get it.” Seonghyeon and Juhoon said at the same time, standing up.
A beat had passed and neither of them moved. If you didn’t notice the tension then, you could clearly see it now.
The way they both refused to break eye contact.
The way they were subtly trying to size each other up.
The way their body language shifted.
“Orrr I could just go.” You said, preparing to get up.
“No.” They both turned to you.
“Oookay.” You sat back down immediately.
Juhoon ended up caving and sat back down, to which Seonghyeon beamed in glee at his surrender, taking in his victory as he went off to order drinks for the three of you.
“Are you still cold?” Juhoon asked
“A little, but not as much as before. Why?”
Without saying anything more, Juhoon removed his scarf and placed it on you, wrapping it around your neck securely to ensure your warmth.
“Oh thank you,” you said in response to the heartwarming action. “What about you? Won’t you be cold?”
“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to get sick.”
“I am sure,” he chuckled. “Just wear it, you have the immune system of a peanut.”
“Wow, you remembered I get sick easily. I’m touched.” You feigned a crying expression before the two of you bursted out in laughter.
“Of course I remember,” he said quietly.
The two of you sat in comfortable silence for a bit before Juhoon broke it,
“Does he make you happy?” Juhoon asked, staring straight ahead.
You turned towards Juhoon. “Sorry?”
“I asked if he makes you happy.” He repeated, still looking in front of him.
You looked down at your hands, “Yeah,” you said softly. “Yeah, he does make me happy.”
Juhoon didn’t look at you, “Okay. If you’re happy, I’m happy.”
You turned to him once more, confused, “What is that supposed to mean?”
“I-”
“What are you two talking about?” Seonghyeon came back, a drink tray in hand as he sipped on his hot vanilla latte.
“Nothing important, thank you.” You took the drink from the tray he nudged towards you, taking a small sip from it before letting out a sigh of content.
Almost immediately Seonghyeon clocked the scarf that was now wrapped around your neck. His eyes narrowed, recognizing it as Juhoon’s, his gaze shifted.
“I didn’t know what you wanted so I just got you apple cider as well.” he said mindlessly, leaving the tray next to Juhoon before returning to his spot next to you on the bench.
“Thank you.” he said, picking it up and letting it rest in his hands before going quiet again.
The three of you sat in silence once more, sipping on your drinks every now and then before deciding to leave.
The air was thick and tense on the way home. This time, Seonghyeon stood on your left and Juhoon trailed behind.
Juhoon walked slowly with his head down and hands in his pockets, absentmindedly, almost like he was lost in thoughts, only ever looking up when you turned around to check up on him.
Out of concern you kept looking back, even waving him over to walk next to you as there was still enough space remaining for the three of you to walk in-line with each other, but all he did was shake his head and give you a small smile before mouthing, “You two go ahead.” Which you only responded to with a frown and nod.
A million thoughts raced through his head and the sight of you and Seonghyeon holding hands in front of him didn’t help either.
It was unfair.
It was unfair that Seonghyeon, whom you have only known for three years, got to be the one holding your hands.
It was unfair that Seonghyeon, whom you have only known for three years, got to be the one who said “goodnight” to you on the phone every night.
It was unfair that Seonghyeon, whom you have only known for three years, got to be the one giving you hugs and kisses when he couldn’t.
It was unfair that Seonghyeon, whom you have only known for three years, got to be the one to have you when he couldn’t even ask you out officially.
It was unfair that Seonghyeon, whom you have only known for three years, got to be the one you called “home” when he was there for you all those years.
Juhoon held back tears as he could hear the two of you conversing ahead of him. Your laugh, that he grew to love, rang in his ears and all he could do was push down his emotions before he made the decision to do something impulsive and extremely stupid.
He refused to look up, he couldn’t.
Not when you were smiling at someone else that wasn’t him.
Not when you were interlocking fingers with someone else that wasn’t him.
Not when you were talking about the randomest thing on earth to someone else with such interest and passion that wasn’t him.
It was supposed to be him.
It was supposed to be him, and the fact that it wasn’t broke his heart into a million different pieces beyond fixing.
As you approached your house, Juhoon spoke up.
“Hey I’m going to head home now, I’ll text you later. Tell your mom I said thank you for breakfast.” He shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other, giving Seonghyeon a wave goodbye.
“Oh you’re leaving already? Yeah of course, my mom loves having you over. Get home safe, text me when you get home.” You gave Juhoon a hug which he reciprocated half-heartedly before walking off.
You watched as he walked down the block, his figure progressively getting smaller in the distance, before he turned the corner and was out of your vision completely.
“Hey,” Seonghyeon said before pulling you into a hug. You heard him inhale and exhale deeply before letting you go, walking you to your door.
“I had fun with you today. It’s a shame we weren’t alone though.”
“Huh? Oh yeah,” you said softly. “I had fun too.”
“You know he likes you right?”
“What are you talking about?” Seonghyeon let out an amused chuckle at your response.
“I’m saying it’s obvious Juhoon likes you,” he started. “I mean, I don’t blame him. Anyone would be lucky to have you.”
“Plus, I don’t mind the competition. I know that I’m the better fit for you anyways.” he said, giving you a kiss on the cheek.
“Call me beautiful. I’ll be waiting for your text.” Seonghyeon said, giving you a smile before walking off.
