Chapter 2 — Getting Used to You
By the end of my first day, I was exhausted. Not the kind of exhausted where you wanted to sleep for twelve hours, but the kind where your brain simply couldn’t process anything anymore. There had been schedules to organize, files to sort, translations to check, and approximately a million names and faces I was trying to remember. Somehow, though, the part of the day I kept thinking about wasn’t the work. It was them. All five of them.
I was sitting at my desk, staring at my laptop screen, when someone suddenly dropped into the chair beside me.
“You’re still here?”
I looked up.
Keonho.
I smiled. “Apparently.”
He looked at the clock.
“It’s almost seven.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because I have work.”
He stared at me for a second before nodding seriously.
“That’s unfortunate.”
I laughed. “You’re supposed to be working too.”
“I finished.”
“You finished everything?”
“No.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“I finished enough.”
Before I could answer, Seonghyeon walked past us and stopped.
“Keonho, stop bothering her.”
“I’m not bothering her.”
“You are.”
Keonho looked at me.
“Am I bothering you?”
I shook my head. “Not really.”
He smiled proudly.
“See?”
Seonghyeon sighed and walked away.
“You’re going to regret saying that.”
“Probably.”
Keonho leaned closer to my desk.
“So… do you like it here?”
I thought about it.
“Yeah. I think so.”
“Even though you’ve only been here one day?”
“Everyone’s been really nice.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
Then he looked over my shoulder.
“You’re working on Martin’s schedule?”
I glanced at the screen.
“Yeah.”
Keonho’s expression immediately changed.
“Oh.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Why are you smiling?”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
He stood up.
“I have to go.”
“Keonho.”
He was already walking away.
“Bye!”
I shook my head, trying not to laugh.
A few minutes later, I heard footsteps approaching.
I didn’t look up at first.
“Are you still working?”
I knew the voice immediately.
Martin.
I looked up.
He was standing on the other side of my desk, holding two drinks.
“Apparently.”
He smiled.
“I thought you’d gone home.”
“I was going to.”
He placed one of the drinks on my desk.
“Here.”
I stared at it.
“What’s this?”
“Iced tea.”
“For me?”
He nodded.
“You looked tired.”
I looked at the drink, then back at him.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
He pulled the chair beside me out and sat down.
“But I wanted to.”
My heart did that stupid little thing again.
I quickly looked back at my laptop.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
For a while, we just sat there.
It wasn’t awkward.
That surprised me.
Usually silence with someone I’d just met made me nervous, but with Martin it felt strangely comfortable.
He looked at my screen.
“You’re almost finished.”
“Yeah.”
“You’ve been working too much.”
“It’s my first day. I don’t want to mess anything up.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
He smiled.
“I do.”
I looked at him.
“How?”
“Because you’re already checking everything three times.”
I laughed softly.
“Maybe I’m just paranoid.”
“Maybe.”
He took a sip of his drink.
“But you’re doing well.”
Something about hearing that made me smile.
“Thanks.”
He looked at me for a moment before turning his attention back to his drink.
“So, what do you usually do when you’re not working?”
I blinked.
“Why?”
He shrugged.
“Just curious.”
I smiled.
“Nothing exciting. I watch movies, listen to music, go out with friends sometimes.”
“What kind of music?”
“Pretty much everything.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is.”
“No, it’s not.”
I laughed.
“Okay. I listen to pop, R&B, indie… depends on my mood.”
He nodded thoughtfully.
“What’s your favorite song right now?”
I told him.
His eyes widened slightly.
“Really?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“I like that song too.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Maybe your taste isn’t terrible.”
I gasped.
“Excuse me?”
He laughed.
“I’m joking.”
“You better be.”
He laughed again, and I realized I was smiling too.
For a moment, I forgot that he was someone I’d only met yesterday.
Then the studio door opened.
James walked in.
He looked at Martin.
Then at me.
Then at the two drinks on my desk.
His expression immediately became amused.
“Interesting.”
Martin frowned.
“What?”
James pointed at the drink.
“You bought her one?”
Martin shrugged.
“She looked tired.”
James nodded slowly.
“Of course.”
Martin rolled his eyes.
“Don’t start.”
“I’m not saying anything.”
“You don’t have to.”
James laughed before looking at me.
“Don’t worry. He does this with everyone.”
Martin immediately looked at him.
“I do not.”
James smiled.
“Sure.”
He walked away.
I looked at Martin.
“Does he always tease you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he enjoys annoying me.”
From across the room, James shouted, “Correct!”
I laughed.
Martin covered his face with one hand.
“I can’t stand them.”
“Yes, you can.”
He looked at me.
“Unfortunately.”
I smiled.
There was a short silence.
Then he asked quietly, “Are you coming tomorrow?”
I looked at him.
“Of course.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
I wasn’t sure why that one word made me feel so warm.
Maybe because I knew exactly what he meant.
He wanted to see me again.
At least, that’s what I hoped he meant.
The next morning, I arrived earlier than usual.
I told myself it was because I didn’t want to be late again.
That was definitely the reason.
It had nothing to do with the fact that I was secretly hoping to see Martin.
Nothing at all.
I walked into the building and made my way toward the studio. The door was slightly open, and I could hear voices inside.
“You can’t just eat mine.”
“I thought it was mine.”
“How does that even make sense?”
I smiled.
They were already arguing.
I pushed the door open.
“Good morning.”
All five heads turned toward me.
Keonho immediately smiled.
“Y/N!”
James waved.
“Morning.”
Juhoon nodded.
“Good morning.”
Seonghyeon smiled.
“You’re early.”
Then I noticed Martin.
He was sitting on the floor beside the couch, looking through his phone.
The second he saw me, his face lit up.
“Morning.”
I smiled.
“Morning.”
Keonho looked between us.
Then he looked at James.
Then back at us.
I narrowed my eyes.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s always nothing.”
James laughed.
“Don’t worry about him.”
I put my bag down.
“What’s going on?”
“We’re deciding what to eat later,” Juhoon explained.
Keonho raised his hand.
“Pizza.”
James shook his head.
“Again?”
“Pizza is never a bad idea.”
Seonghyeon sighed.
“You said that yesterday.”
“And?”
I laughed.
Martin stood up.
“What do you want?”
I looked at him.
“For lunch?”
He nodded.
“Yeah.”
I thought for a second.
“I don’t really mind.”
“Then you choose.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’re new.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It does to me.”
I smiled.
“Fine.”
Everyone started throwing out suggestions.

CORTIS |Martin|
Chapter 1 — The Beginning
I had always believed that some days were supposed to change your life. You just never knew which ones. Sometimes it was a birthday, sometimes it was the day you moved to a new city, and sometimes it was the day you met someone who would eventually become one of the most important people in your life. For me, it was a completely ordinary Tuesday. At least, that’s what I thought.
I stood outside the building with one hand wrapped tightly around the strap of my bag, staring up at the enormous glass entrance in front of me. My stomach felt like it had been tied into ten different knots. “Okay,” I whispered to myself. “You can do this.” I took a deep breath before walking inside.
This was my first day working with the production team. It wasn’t supposed to be anything huge. I was going to help with content, translations, schedules and whatever else they needed. Simple. Easy. Nothing to be nervous about.
Except for one tiny detail.
The project involved CORTIS.
I had obviously heard of them before. It was pretty much impossible not to. I had seen their videos, their interviews, their performances and countless clips online, but seeing them through a phone screen was completely different from standing inside the building where they actually worked.
I checked my phone and immediately felt my stomach drop.
10:04 AM.
I was already four minutes late.
“Perfect,” I muttered under my breath. “First day and I’m already late.”
I hurried down the hallway, trying to figure out where I was supposed to go. I looked down at the message on my phone for just a second, and that was enough.
I turned the corner and suddenly crashed straight into someone.
“Ah—I’m sorry!”
My bag slipped off my shoulder and landed on the floor, sending my notebook, pens and a few papers everywhere.
“Are you okay?” a voice asked.
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Slowly, I looked up.
Martin was standing right in front of me.
He was wearing a black hoodie, his headphones hanging around his neck, and his hair looked slightly messy, like he’d been running around all morning. His expression was worried, and for a second I completely forgot how to speak.
“Are you hurt?” he asked again.
I blinked quickly. “No. I’m okay.”
My voice came out much quieter than I wanted.
“Good.”
He smiled before immediately crouching down to help me pick everything up. I quickly knelt down too.
“I’m really sorry,” I said.
“No, it’s my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
“You were probably busy.”
“So were you.”
I looked at him and noticed the small smile on his face. It wasn’t the kind of smile I’d seen in interviews or videos. It wasn’t meant for a camera. It was just a normal smile, warm and genuine, and somehow that made my heart beat a little faster.
He picked up my notebook and handed it to me.
“Here.”
“Thanks.”
Our fingers touched for half a second when I took it from him, and I immediately pulled my hand back. Martin noticed. I could tell from the tiny smile that appeared on his face.
“You just started?” he asked.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“First day?”
“Is it that obvious?”
He laughed softly. “A little.”
“Great.”
“Don’t worry. Everyone looks terrified on their first day.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Even you?”
“Especially me.”
I couldn’t help smiling.
Before I could say anything else, someone shouted from down the hallway.
“Martin!”
We both turned around.
James was standing there with his arms crossed, looking slightly annoyed.
“You said you’d only be gone for five minutes.”
Martin looked down at his phone and his eyes widened.
“That was five minutes?”
James stared at him.
“That was fifteen.”
Martin blinked.
“Oh.”
I covered my mouth to hide my laugh, but James had already noticed me. His eyes moved toward me curiously.
“Who’s this?”
Martin opened his mouth, but before he could answer, Juhoon, Seonghyeon and Keonho appeared behind James.
Keonho immediately looked at me with an amused expression.
“New person?”
James nodded. “Apparently.”
Seonghyeon looked at Martin.
“Did you introduce yourself?”
Martin frowned. “Why would I need to introduce myself?”
“Because you’ve been standing here for fifteen minutes.”
“I haven’t been here for fifteen minutes.”
James gave him a look.
“You literally have.”
Martin sighed. “I just bumped into her.”
Keonho grinned.
“Literally?”
Martin stared at him.
“Yes.”
“Smooth.”
“Can you all stop?”
I couldn’t help it.
I laughed.
All five of them looked at me, and I immediately felt my cheeks getting warm.
“Sorry.”
Seonghyeon smiled. “Don’t apologize. That was funny.”
James stepped forward and held out his hand.
“I’m James.”
I shook his hand. “I’m Y/N.”
“Nice to meet you.”
Juhoon introduced himself next, followed by Seonghyeon and Keonho. They were all surprisingly easy to talk to. I had expected them to be intimidating, but within a few minutes, the nervous feeling in my stomach had started to disappear.
They were loud, playful and clearly very close with each other. It felt like I had accidentally walked into a group of friends rather than a workplace.
Martin looked at me.
“You’re supposed to be with the production team, right?”
“Yeah.”
“I can show you where to go.”
James immediately raised an eyebrow.
“We’re going that way anyway.”
Martin ignored him.
“I’ll show her.”
Keonho looked at Seonghyeon. Seonghyeon looked back at him. They both smiled like they knew something I didn’t.
I frowned slightly but decided not to ask.
“Okay,” I said.
Martin nodded toward the hallway.
“Come on.”
I followed him, trying not to think about how weird it felt walking next to someone I’d only just met but already somehow felt comfortable around.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Martin glanced at me.
“So…”
“So?”
“Are you nervous?”
I hesitated.
“A little.”
“About working here?”
“Mostly.”
He nodded.
“I was nervous too when I first started.”
I looked at him.
“You?”
He laughed.
“Yeah.”
“You don’t seem nervous.”
“That’s because I’m pretending.”
I smiled.
“You’re not very convincing.”
He looked at me in fake disbelief.
“Wow.”
I laughed. “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay.”
He smiled again.
We continued walking until we reached a large studio. Martin opened the door and stepped aside so I could walk in first.
There were cameras, chairs, tables covered with notebooks and bottles of water, and equipment scattered around the room. Music was playing quietly from a speaker in the corner.
“This is where we spend most of our time,” Martin explained.
I looked around.
“It looks chaotic.”
“It is.”
I laughed.
“Usually James is the organized one.”
From somewhere behind us, James shouted, “I HEARD THAT!”
Martin laughed.
“And usually Keonho steals everyone’s food.”
“I HEARD THAT TOO!” Keonho shouted from the hallway.
I laughed again, and Martin turned toward me.
“You laugh a lot.”
I stopped smiling for a second.
“Is that bad?”
“No.”
His voice was quieter this time.
He looked at me for a moment before smiling.
“I like it.”
My heart skipped.
I looked away, pretending to be interested in one of the cameras.
“Thanks.”
Martin walked over to a table and picked up a notebook.
“You’ll get used to everyone.”
“I hope so.”
“You will.”
He looked at me.
“I’ll make sure.”
Something about the way he said it made my chest feel warm.
Before I could answer, the door opened and James walked inside.
“Martin.”
Martin sighed.
“What?”
“We need you.”
“Coming.”
James looked at me.
“Don’t let him bother you too much.”
Martin stared at him.
“Why are you saying that?”
“Because I know you.”
“I literally haven’t done anything.”
James shrugged.
“Exactly.”
He walked away, and Martin shook his head.
“He’s annoying.”
I smiled.
“You seem close.”
Martin nodded.
“We are. They’re basically my family.”
I looked toward the hallway where the others had disappeared.
“I can tell.”
He looked back at me.
“And now you’re part of the team.”
I smiled.
“Guess I am.”
Martin started walking toward the door, but just before he left, he stopped.
He turned around and looked at me one more time.
“See you later, Y/N.”
Hearing my name from him felt strangely different. I didn’t know why. Maybe it was because he said it so naturally, like he’d already gotten used to saying it.
I smiled.
“See you, Martin.”
He smiled back before finally leaving.
I stood there for a few seconds, staring at the doorway. Then I shook my head and quietly laughed at myself.
“Get it together.”
It was my first day. I had just met five members of CORTIS, and somehow one thing was already stuck in my mind: the way Martin had looked at me.
I told myself it meant nothing.
He was just being friendly.
He was probably like that with everyone.
There was no reason for my heart to beat faster just because he’d smiled at me.
At least, that’s what I told myself.
What I didn’t know was that, somewhere down the hallway, Martin was walking back toward the others with the smallest smile on his face.
And when Keonho looked at him and immediately asked, “Why are you smiling like that?”
Martin’s smile disappeared.
“I’m not.”
Keonho raised an eyebrow.
“You definitely are.”
“I’m not.”
James looked over from his phone.
“He is.”
Seonghyeon laughed.
“It’s because of Y/N.”
Martin’s eyes widened.
“What? No.”
Juhoon smirked.
“You were gone for fifteen minutes.”
“Because I bumped into her.”
Keonho laughed.
“Sure.”
Martin rolled his eyes and walked ahead of them, trying to hide the smile that was slowly returning to his face.
He didn’t know why he had noticed her so quickly. He didn’t know why he remembered the sound of her laugh already. And he definitely didn’t know why he was hoping he’d see her again later.
But maybe some things weren’t supposed to make sense at the beginning.
Maybe some people simply appeared in your life at exactly the right moment.
And maybe that ordinary Tuesday wasn’t going to be ordinary after all.
