Preventive Measures for Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Cats and humans have many similarities – some are good and some not-so-good. Out of the many not-so-good similarities thyroid related problem is one. For many pet owners, particularly new, it could be a shocking revelation.

Since thyroxine, the primary hormone secreted by thyroid gland, located in front of the neck, below the larynx (voice box), regulates a number of metabolic activities, or calling it just, the life-sustaining processes from digestion and absorption to excretion, its inadequate (hypothyroidism) or excess production (hyperthyroidism) disturbs these processes and make the pet sick.

Since both are different scenarios marked by their own set of symptoms and health issues, it would be better to discuss them separately. In this post, we are confining ourselves to hyperthyroidism in cats. Find top 5 preventive measures to check or control hyperthyroidism in cats.

1 Avoid feeding fish-flavored cat foods

This includes all types: canned, non-canned and raw fish. The protein-rich fish diet triggers the secretion of thyroxine. However, there is one more reason to avoid canned food – the lining of the container usually contains Bisphenol A (BPA), which is suspected to cause hyperthyroidism.

If your cat is highly dependent on commercial food, take note of the ingredients present in it before buying. If there is any doubt, prefer consulting your veterinarian.

2. Be a good friend to your pet

In the busy life, most of the pet owners might find it difficult to spend time with their pets, but it’s highly recommended. Spending time with your pet helps you understand its behavior and observe symptoms related to the disease, if any, and take immediate measures to prevent it from becoming alarming.

3. Serve your cat with a highly digestible diet

The percentage of a foodstuff taken into the digestive tract that is absorbed into the body. That’s how Merriam-Webster describes digestion. A healthy digestion help your cat’s body to gain the nutrition it needs which, in turn, regulates the functioning of the hormones. Hence, give appropriate diets or supplements, which are easy to digest, to your cat.

4. Take your cat to a veterinarian annually

Take your cat to a vet twice a year as part of a health check-up program. Conducting routine blood and urine tests is beneficial as it helps you identify any thyroid hormonal disorder well in time.

5. Take pet medications with care

Certain pet medications are also known to trigger the secretion of thyroid directly or indirectly. Hence, if your cat is already having a history of thyroid problem, you should observe extra precaution when it comes to treating other diseases as some pet medicines for cats can lead to thyroid hormonal disorder.

The Bottom Line

What makes thyroid in cats a severe health concern? The problem remains undiagnosed or wrongly addressed because of the lack of understanding due to the surfacing of a number of secondary symptoms and, this further worsens the situation and triggers other diseases.

Most of the pet owners would be little worried if their cats drink or urinate frequently. If the pet doesn’t play or eat well, they are likely to see a vet, but not if it stays hyperactive or overeats. They will take it as a good sign. They could be right, but if the symptoms go beyond a certain level, then it’s a cause of concern.

Never risk giving cat hyperthyroidism medication to your pet without consulting your vet.

Picking up Peaches from Purrfect Pals (from The Critter Room)

Foster Dad John has a new foster—meet Peaches Chutney. She is not a kitten but a beautiful elder calico. At thirteen she (along with four other older cats) was surrendered to a shelter. All five cats have hyperthyroidism, a common condition for older cats that requires treatment.

Adopted by a community

Foster Dad John’s shelter, Purrfect Pals, rescued these five seniors from being euthanized as the other shelter could no longer keep them. Members of the Kitten Cam community raised over three thousand dollars in just a few days to secure medical treatment for these cats.

And now Peaches Chutney (aka “Granny”) has won the kitty jackpot being placed in the home of Foster Dad John. John has a special affection for seniors as several of his own cats fit into this category.

Do cats really sleep 16 hours per day?

It’s funny watching the chat that goes along with the live Granny cam: “O! She moved.” “Cute meow!” Obviously not a lot of action from a senior. Cats are reported to sleep some sixteen hours a day. We’re getting a first hand look with Lady Peaches.

Growing mellow with age

Peaches is a cat that I instantly want to scoop up into my arms. Senior cats can be so loving and affectionate. I remember my Noah, standoffish and grouchy most of his life until he hit fifteen; then he turned into a total love. Bacci was a senior I adopted from my late mother’s nursing home and I lost my heart to him the day he tapped me on the arm with his giant mitten paw.

Calling for John

And I love how Foster Dad John’s “Granny cam” brings that point home. This Granny cam is such a wonderful way to promote the idea of adopting senior pets. They have a lot of love to give and want all the love you can give in return.

Old is scary.

Old is good but old is also scary. You take risks getting attached to seniors. They have health problems. They suffer and sometimes they get crabby because they hurt. And they pass away and break the heart you gave so freely to them.

Taking a chance with the heart

Elderly cats. Elderly people. My best friend just turned eighty and I am fifty-nine. Jackie is deep as a well, gentle, loving, funny and empathetic. I can’t imagine my life without her but I know that time will be coming sooner rather than later. I know it’s risky to give my heart away so totally to her but I can’t help it. It’s worth my heart being busted to pieces just so I can be a part of Jackie’s life, even for a short time.
