basics:
name: utp age: utp (21+) gender identity (pronouns): masc-presenting, trans-masc suggested (utp) occupation: drug dealer other: not straight, probably
aesthetics & personality:
worn out converse sneakers, cigarette butts, writing obscene messages in the bathroom stalls, disheveled clothing, loud laughter, eye drops, motorcycles, fresh tattoos, the smell of febreze masking marijuana, skateboards, baggy pants. i wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face, and it never feels out of place.. hypnos is exactly where he wants to be. you've never met someone who could be so happy spending his days in bed and his nights running down streetlight lit streets. he wakes up everyday unsure of what he'll do that day, but he never lives a dull day.
bio:
utp.
connections:
hermes: you grew up with hermes, spending every day getting into some sort of trouble together. and honestly you kind of resent him for getting an office job and leaving you to your own devices. at least until 5pm hits and you're back together having the night of your life.. every night. maybe you're too attached to him.. but, when you've known someone for so long, it's hard to imagine life without them.. that's all it is.. zeus: no one cares about weed these days, not really. i mean, they might not want their politicians getting buying pot from some 'lazy delinquent' everyday.. but they'd definitely prefer that to what zeus if buying from you, the lazy delinquent, everyday. hecate: there isn't much to say about your relationship with hecate.. she buys weed, you buy shrooms. it's a perfect example of symbiotic relationship, very mutually beneficial.

CODEX
Dear Hypnos was born laughing, and they never learned to stop. His gaiety may sound like a flash in the pan, but it cuts through the gloom in the House of Hades - and defies both Fate & Chaos. For Hypnos’ auguries, like so many in Tartarus, predicted nothing but darkness. In an ill-omened union, their parents resisted Hades’ rule... and danced to the same grave that swallows all his enemies. It was Nyx who took them in, as she did for so many children of the old world. Perhaps it was lingering guilt for the part she had to play in Hades’ ascent. Perhaps it was guilt for other things - whatever the sin, Hypnos inherited none of it.
Indeed, the sprightly kid seems a stranger to blame. Or grief. Or deceit, greed, and violence. Come to think of it, they are impervious to everything that makes Tartarus what it is. The blood that seeps through the very stones has no course to reach them. Until now, I thought the name their friends gave them - firefly, or fire beetle, depending who you ask - came on account of their white hair. But now I suspect there’s another reason for it. Maybe the Asphodel squad, as they ‘ironically’ call themselves, glimpsed what Hades had not: that Hypnos’ strength laid in their nonchalance. For fixers and Furies abound in the depths, but a purity of nature - a distance taken from misery & tedium - are rare things to find.
Perhaps the Underworld’s King should’ve fostered that spark. Hypnos’ tinkering mind led them from security puzzles to card tables, from casino operations to the deep outreaches of the kitchen. They bored of everything too quickly. Once Nyx allowed them to shadow her, they copied Thanatos’ lead, always lagging a step behind - and staying in the light.
Nyx protected the firefly for as long as she could, but even she had to admit no one wanted a second Zagreus on their hands. Hypnos was to do his part to help Tartarus. ‘The child has been sponging off of us long enough’, Hades rumbled. ‘They’ll be a fixer, like they should’ve gone from the start.’ I couldn’t think of anything worse for the kid - he was always so forgetful as it was. But I avoided to make my case. Few people can speak up in the House of Hades.
In odd ways, I suppose Hades’ threat worked. The horror of becoming a fixer - and following in Thanatos’ grim, unyielding steps - spurred them on. It led to the creation of Somnus: a potent, addictive substance that mellows the mind and heightens the senses. After weeks of laboring over chemical reactions, they found the perfect mix of weakness and power. It was ideally suited to Tartarus’ many services, and a strategic counterpart to Ambrosia’s effects. They all knew they’d stumbled upon gold - Hypnos, Nyx, even Hades.
The trick of an epiphany is that it seldom leaves you freer than before. Now, Hypnos finds themself busy working to keep up with demand - not only in Tartarus, but the whole of Gaia. For Hades has plans to extend Khton beyond his bleak domain... even if he has to go against Arcadia’s laws to do it. Hypnos says nothing about this... but I know it must eat at them. They are not a creature of survival, but one of enjoyment. The fact that all their friends seem caught in three-part tragedies only makes matters worse. Could salvation come from venturesome Dionysus? It is rumoured the couturier offered them a place on his team. Or are they an event planner now? One truly cannot keep up. One thing is certain: Hypnos’ ticket is almost printed out. Will they be brave enough to reach out for it?
CONNECTIONS
Familial connections: Thanatos (siblings of fate, the better half). Nyx (mentor, mother... but don’t let her hear).
Professional connections: Hades (employer... for now). Dionysus (business offer, perhaps the first risk worth taking?).
Social connections: Zagreus (old pal on the road to good & evil). Dusa (veteran Asphodel sidekick, recently too stressed). Eurydice (a light was there, and now it’s missing). Orpheus (departed Asphodel member, gone to better shores). Megara, Alecto, Tisiphone (the rest of the Asphodel squad, best harbingers of doom). Minotaur (guards the laboratories sometimes, thrilling company... without Theseus in tow).

describe how your muse's perfect "everyday" day would be like ( for hypnos )
whispers from shades || question time!
It'd be easy to say the 'perfect everyday' day would be managing to sleep through the whole of it, but if we're being super ideal, it would be:
No one in line to get the welcome and orientation into Hades
He sees his brother and gets to spend time with him
He can see his mother and she is willing to talk to him
Zagreus drops by for a conversation
He gets to talk to just about anyone without being ignored
Hades doesn't yell at him or wake him abruptly after falling asleep
He can spend time with mortals in their dreams and help them/join in with whatever it is that theyr're up to
That is probably a bit of an ask, so he's willing to settle. As long as he can cruise through without conflict or tension, he'll be happy.
Curious anon here, for any three random of your muses, what would you say is a quality they are drawn to in other people? Or, if it’s easier, a quality they absolutely loathe or do not vibe with in someone else?
thank you so much for this and? this is a million years late but I’ve been thinking about this one for a while- about how to write this and who to write this ask for. I’ve decided on hypnos, s0 and neuro.......
Hypnos
drawn to: the new and novel, sweet and soft, cozy and warm, art and creativity, depression and illness, stress and tension repelled by: aggression, confrontation, too muchness
What? What are negative aspects doing in the drawn to section? Well Hypnos has a natural inclination to help others and sleep often finds himself in the presence of people who desperately seek him like the sick, the sad and the ones that seek an escape. Escape from reality and responsibilities. He loves it when he receives rare kindness and consideration but he is definitely used to dealing with a lot of the bad things that mortals go through. He doesn’t understand it himself, but he hears that it’s good to adopt a positive outlook to overcome difficulties.
He is easily intimidated by high tension and high energy. He is a low energy kind of guy and finds himself at a loss when it comes to big personalities and overwhelming egos.
Number S0: Utopic Zexal
drawn to: sincerity, courage, determination, strength of will repelled by: cowardice, selfish behaviour
No surprise here that Shine is a fan of the virtues. It is honor that he will admire most, and if you’re someone who embodies such qualities, you will be gravitated towards. Let’s say, you’re known for indulging in the vices, you will likely disappear from his minds eye in such a case. Shine admires changes for the better, as he understands the strength required to create change within one’s self and strives to be the best and greatest in every conceivable way. He wishes to bask in the lights of others and share his strength to support those who he believes deserves it most.
Being someone chaotically aligned isn’t enough to land anyone in his bad books though, S0 is reasonably open minded outside his duties to Astral World, but people who seek to gain things from the suffering of others are irredeemable scum in his eyes and will meet with the Number’s harsh nature. Did you know that banishment is the most popular sentence in Astral World? Now you do. Death is the next best thing.
Brain Eater Neuro
drawn to: intelligence, novelty, non conformity, malice, adaptability repelled by: cowardice, predictability
No one is surprised that shitty demon bird man will happily insert himself among the absolute dregs or read and research the worst of the just soak in their shitty attitudes as a learning experience. Use what he learns of terrible human behaviour for later (trying to understand humans/using his knowledge to pester Yako later for laughs). Honestly it’s entertaining to mess with humans, especially if they’re likely to react in exciting ways like getting extremely offended or trying to pull a weapon on him because lmao how silly how interesting. Look at this garbage immoral criminal suffer wow what fun.
Joking, japes and mischief aside, he likes the opposite kind of person he usually deals with. Neuro wants only the most capable and loyal humans in his company. He is big on trust and won’t get involved with anything that will waste his time and energy for no good reason. Top tier people only. Like Yako. But don’t tell her. Surely by now she knows that he sees her on his level. Watching a lower creature become more greater? Subverting expectations?
Admirable. Wonderful. Yes, let him see how incredible humans can be.
Let me share some of my favourite bits. BypnosMythology long post coming right up. Source is theoi.
Nonnus, Dionysiaca 35. 262 ff : "[During the Indian War of Dionysos :] Zeus awoke on the peaks of Kaukasos (Caucasus) and threw of the wing of Sleep (Hypnos) . . . He understood the beguiling trick of Hera the mischiefmaker when he saw the Seilenoi (Silens) [ in the army of Dionysos] in flight, when he saw the Bakkhante (Bacchante) women hurrying in herds from the threeways and the walls, and behind them the Indian chieftain Deriades, cutting down Satyroi (Satyrs) and mowing down women . . . Then Zeus disclosed Hera's mischievous contrivance, and reproached his deceitful consort with stinging words. And now indeed he would have imprisoned Hypnos (Sleep) in the darksome pit of gloom to dwell along with murky Iapetos, but for the prayers of Nyx (Night) the vanquisher of gods and men. So Zeus calmed his savage resentment with difficulty."
Aelian, Historical Miscellany 2. 34 (trans. Wilson) (Greek rhetorician C2nd to 3rd A.D.) : "At the end of his life, having reached a very great age, Gorgias of Leontini was overcome by weakness and lay gradually slipping away into sleep. When one of his friends came to see him and asked how he was, Gorgias said : ‘Hypnos (Sleep) is now beginning to hand me over to his brother [i.e. Thanatos, Death].’"
Licymnius, Fragment 771 (from Athenaeus, Scholars at Dinner) (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric V) (Greek lyric C4th B.C.) : "[Endymion was a handsome youth loved by the moon-goddess Selene. He was granted immortality in a state of eternal slumber :] Likymnios of Khios (Licymnius of Chios) says the Hypnos (Sleep) loves Endymion and does not close they eyes of his beloved boy even while he is asleep, but lulls him to rest with eyes wide open so that he may without interruption enjoy the pleasure of gazing at them. His words are ‘And Hypnos (Sleep), rejoicing in the rays of his eyes, would lull the boy to rest with eyes wide open.’"
Homer, Iliad 14. 231 ff (trans. Lattimore) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) : "There [in Lemnos] she [Hera] encountered Hypnos (Sleep), the brother of Thanatos (Death). She clung fast to his hand and spoke a word and called him by name : ‘Hypnos, lord over all mortal men and all gods, if ever before now you listened to word of mine, so now also do as I ask; and all my days I shall know gratitude. Put to sleep the shining eyes of Zeus under his brows as soon as I have lain beside him in love. I will give you gifts; a lovely throne, imperishable forever, of gold. My own son, he of the strong arms, Hephaistos, shall make it with careful skill and make for your feet a footstool on which you can rest your shining feet when you take your pleasure.’ Then Hypnos the still and soft spoke to her in answer : ‘Hera, honoured goddess and daughter of mighty Kronos (Cronus), any other one of the gods, whose race is immortal, I would lightly put to sleep, even the stream of that River Okeanos (Oceanus), whence is risen the seed of all the immortals. But I would not come too close to Zeus, the son of Kronos, nor put him to sleep, unless he himself were to tell me. Before now, it was a favour to you that taught me wisdom, on the day Herakles (Heracles), the high-hearted son of Zeus, was sailing from Ilion, when he had utterly sacked the city of the Trojans. That time I laid to sleep the brain in Zeus of the aegis and drifted upon him still and soft, but your mind was devising evil, and you raised along the sea the blasts of the racking winds, and on these swept him away to Kos, the strong-founded, with all his friends lost, but Zeus awakened in anger and beat the gods up and down his house, looking beyond all others for me, and would have sunk me out of sight in the sea from the bright sky had not Nyx (Night) who has power over gods and men rescued me. I reached her in my flight, and Zeus let be, though he was angry, in awe of doing anything to swift Nyx' displeasure. Now you ask me to do this other impossible thing for you.’
Statius, Silvae 5. 4. 1 (trans. Mozley) (Roman poetry C1st A.D.) : "[Prayer of an insomniac to Somnus the god of Sleep :] O youthful Somnus (Sleep) [Hypnos], gentlest of the gods, by what crime or error of mine have I deserved that I alone should lack thy bounty? Silent are all the cattle, and the wild beasts and the birds, and the curved mountain summits have the semblance of weary slumber, nor do the raging torrents roar as they were wont; the ruffled waves have sunk to rest, and the sea leans against earth's bosom and is still. Seven times now hath the returning moon beheld my fixed and ailing eyes; so often have the lights of Oeta and Paphos [i.e. the morning & evening star] revisited me, so oft hath Tithonia [Aurora-Eos, the Dawn] passed by my groans, and pitying sprinkled me with her cool whip [the whip with which she chases away the stars]. Ah! how may I endure? Not if I had the thousand eyes of sacred Argus, which he kept but in alternate watchfulness, nor even waked in all his frame at once. But now--ah, me!--if some lover through the long hours of night is clasping a girl's entwining arms, and of his own will drives thee from him, come thence, O Somnus! Nor do I bid thee shower all the influence of thy wings upon my eyes--that be the prayer of happier folk!--touch me but with thy wand's extremest tip--'tis enough--or pass over me with lightly hovering step."
A curious shade asked : do you have a modern verse for Hypnos?
Yes! I do, I just I don't advertise my AUs much. I usually have like a number of AUs for my muses? Some more than others. I wrote a bit about it yesterday actually I'll link it here. If anyone is interested in hearing about my millions of AU ideas please do I sit and stew on these. And yes he is still a God in modern AU. I like my magic and mythology very much.
Boop and boop.
