turning your head to the side, the teeth cartoonishly shining back at you leave you enamored. if your gaze wandered slightly up, you would see kai’s puffed up red nose. it’s not like you’re appalled by it. in fact, it made his face cuter in your eyes. if he wasn’t sick, you would never get in this position: sitting close enough for your thighs to touch, devices secured in both hands. the screen in front of kai dimmed, the scene different from the bright light shining onto his skin a second ago.
“yn, come sit by the fire!” he called. the sight in front of you left you in a reverie, thus forgetting about the game. while the boy next to you urged you to play the horror game, you reluctantly agreed. the two options were either a picnic game or this one, and his squinted eyes as he smiled so easily convinced you to settle on the latter.
as your character rushes to the fire, the game’s audio emits crackling noises the closer you near. nevertheless, you can barely hear it over the lovely giggling leaving kai’s lips once you sit next to him. like a mirrored image, you’re snuggling in both the game and in real life.
“hyuka…” you trail off, elbowing him yet keeping your gaze frozen on the screen, “what is that?” finally taking your eyes off the screen, you look at his wide ones, curious. why is he so shocked? giving into your prying urges to find the reason for his expression, you turn your head back to its original state, your screen being your only focus.
while kai was already running– following the instruction given after the mysterious creature appeared on top of the campfire– you were barely leaving your seat, confused on how long the objective had been up. if it had been up for too long, then you definitely were not going to finish the task in time.
your state was a major contrast to the boy next to you: panicked. the joystick was pushed all the way up, yet your character wouldn’t run any faster. finally, the cave was just in sight. but then, why couldn’t you move? the character’s feet swung in a repetitive motion, similar to when walking, but it wouldn’t move.
then, like a horror movie’s jump scare, the creature from earlier appeared behind you, the health bar dropping from 100 to zero quickly.
instead of using words, you settled with clinging to kai’s arm, linking it with your own as you watched him play on. the next scene had rain, and the next had tents. but even if your character wasn’t there for it, you had kai and that’s all you needed.

휴닝카이 "i love you" fluff drabble 250 word count masterlist
i love you, and i’ll tell you in three words, show you in a million ways.
the atmosphere filled with the hot breath of children, huening kai’s cousin’s, the stories of cereals and orange juice floating in it. there could be a list, scroll, or even walls filled with black expo markers listing how you feel for this man, yet none would capture the truth.
love isn’t delivered in the form of words limited to one or two syllables, but if not, then what way? indents on the colorful mat as a result of the table lying on it stay even after you move the furniture, moving a chair to replace its place.
love is felt in the way of associating the smallest of gestures or objects with someone, to your love. in the way of focusing your eyes on the spotlight, the boy’s smile as the blanket stays up from under the two items. dust remains in the air as the imaginary light feels too real, every other area illegal for your eyes to come to.
in the way of embracing the color of his ears grow as his warm hands leave your skin lingering in its wake. even with shoes made with velcro opposed to laces thrown on the ground; with teasing and playful yells coming from around; with fabric of bright colors containing logos of cartoon animals, you don’t fail to notice his reaction when you let out the words repeating in your head.
"i love you."

soundtrack: seasons by wave to earth
Kai is easily sunshine — in every single aspect. He warms you up, never fails to make you feel better even by text alone, and excluding the existence of gravity, he reels you in in orbit.
It’s the same reason that why now that he’s finally here with you after only four but very long months, it feels like you’re experiencing the first day without rain.
A gentle squeeze to your hand has you returning to Earth, thumb rubbing over your knuckles. Kai swings your intertwined hand back and forth as he continues telling you about one night after a certain stop during their tour. It’s so funny that he can’t seem to get through it, stopping to laugh and apologize for laughing, bringing your squeezed fingers to use them to move his bangs. He could have easily used his other hand, but he’s too busy rubbing circles mindlessly into your tummy. You can’t help yourself either. His smile and laughter is so contagious; it feels like you haven’t laughed or smiled this much since the last time he was here physically.
The soft bump in his nose is so beautiful, the sweet eye crinkles that reflect the sweetness that blossoms from his beam, that beauty mark on the right side of his warm neck, his light, clean, citrus scent mixed with his freshly washed clothes — it’s all here right in front of you. After so long. It seems silly in hindsight considering you’ve endured longer without being able to see each other. As years go by, you both have learned it gets harder saying goodbye every time.
Your boyfriend and the boys landed right before noon, and you’d waited for their arrival at their dorm, feeling like an obnoxious puppy with the way you anxiously paced for him. It was pure joy and love at first turn of the door knob. Kai had practically lifted you in his arms with all the endorphin driven adrenaline and momentum at his overwhelming happiness of being reunited with you. The boys simply chuckled and watched in amusement before FOMO hit. Such a reunion should have wrought tears and half-humiliated kisses, but instead, you two were grinning ear to ear, holding hands, being quietly lovey dovey.
Evening has taken over of the day you’d been waiting for for so long, and now, in the dorms, it’s just you and him. The boys had said they were heading over to play basketball, Yeonjun throwing you a wink, to which you both had whined in unison, making synchronized laughter of different accents and textures ring through the air.
There is no space between you, such a word doesn’t exist in this here. Why should it? You’d missed an entire season with him, and time persevered nonetheless. Impossibly, you wanted to make back all the time you’d missed with each other. He felt the ache of lost time, felt the ache of missing you, and even if more time like this was to be lost again, here and now outweighed everything else. Now with the way your legs are crossed into each other, your hand that’s molded with his, his hand on your tummy, your hand on his chest, playing with the string of his sweatshirt, on the living room sofa like it’s your own little world. It feels like it. It always does when it comes to him.
Now, that reality has settled, the dust of his arrival no longer flurries in the air, you feel like such a thing, such a moment as precious as here and now, can’t be. Not when you had shared some broken phone calls, yearning through the digital medium, showing half your faces through FaceTime, not when you’d worked your ass off everyday in hopes of making time go by faster with it being occupied, not when you’d prayed for his things to go smoothly throughout the tour and especially for him to comeback soon, even if it meant time were to skip and the universe would be tipped on its side. You were willing for anything if it guaranteed your Hyuka would be back.
And here he is. Laughing so big and contagious, the frequencies of it bring you effervescent warmth, his wide but love shaped body pressing into yours to ignite it even further. Even if the story reads Typical Tubatu, you’re smiling so big and laughing too, even if you get only part of the story because of his interrupting giggles. Maybe such untapped expressions explain why stray tears from what you thought were laughing too hard snowball into endless streams and a smile that turns into a frown.
“And Beomgyu hyung just kept going! Soobin hyung wasn’t having it, but it was still! — s-so — oh… Y/N?” A hiccup of a sob escapes your curled lips when he stops, leaning in and his own eyes glazing over at acknowledgement of your emotion. He’s still smiling, it’s softer now, the sunlight in his eyes still bright but again, softer now with brief overcast of his sensitivity towards your tears. His hand drops from your tummy and comes to catch the tears that keep flowing.
“‘M-I’m sorry!” You laugh, sniffling, or sniffle, laughing, really, you’re a mess of it all. Kai coos, shaking his head, so delicate in the way he holds your face, other hand still squeezing yours. You use your sleeve to rub at the rest of your face. He keeps shaking his head to your apologies, closing in to pepper kisses on your cheeks when you don’t let up, when you keep crying.
“Y/N,” he asks with a tone that suggest he’s pleading but for what, you don’t know. Your lips shake. Kai chuckles wetly, your heart squeezing at the thought of him even crying over this sudden slip up of emotion of yours. “I’m sorry,” you say not for the last time, he sighs against your salty lips. He places his forehead against yours, slotting his body closer against yours.
“I just — Kai, I missed you so much. I-I’m so happy, I can’t — I can’t help it! I missed you so much it hurts and I-I can’t…I’m so lucky you’re here. It’s too good to be real!” You cry brokenly, trailing off to giggle at yourself for being so taken, and Kai mirrors your expression entirely, nose reddening, sniffling, and giggling, too. He kisses your the column of your nose, nosing your own once he pecks your mouth a bit clumsily. He does so with purpose, it looks like.
“I’m sorry that I had to leave, I really am, but I swear, I’m here now. And I too am so, so, stupidly happy to be here with you,” Kai steals a few but meaningful kisses from you, keen on trailing the side of your face with his hand, as if to commit it to memory, to mind, to muscle, to heart. He steals your breaths from you, recycling them, when oxygen returns to your lungs slowly but surely — a sheepish laugh leaving your mouth against his because of it all. Kai brings your intertwined hands to his lips, kissing your knuckles, the backside of your palm, your phalanges, and your thumb.
“I missed you so much, my sweet. Feels like one of the many, many dreams I’d have all those lonely nights without you while I was abroad. All throughout the day, I’d think, ‘the alarm should go off any minute now…’ and it never does. I hope it never does. I wanna stay here forever with you.” You’re going to cry again, moving in to kiss him, and he meets you halfway. Lips against the other, your smiles all but mold together. “I love you, Y/N.” He whispers and you hear it twice: through your ears and the burning skin of your lips.
“I love you more.” You say, and his laugh comes out muffled.
It’s a long moment of closeness being fulfilled, soft kisses filling the air every now and then, before you pull away, cheeks red and tear streaked. You lean away, as he lays his head against the top of the sofa, your fingers brushing some of his trimmed fringe back. He cut his hair. He’s so handsome, it somehow makes him look all the more charming and adorable.
“I interrupted your story, Kai. Please continue for me, if you can. I want to hear every single thing you have to say.” Your fingers brush the warmth of his flesh, and he flutters his eyes shut almost in reverence. He nods, opening them, and pecking at your pulse point. Such an easygoing smile graces his lips, so gentle and serene, and yet the repercussions are enormous. Your heart falls back into place. Everything does. Now, that your Kai is back.
“If you say so.” He laughs and sighs after a brief pause, eyes meeting yours. “Thank you for waiting for me.”
You gasp, mouth forming a pout at that.
“Come on, Hyuka. You know me!” Your tone eases up especially when you reposition yourself on him, closer in on him, both of your hands flattening across the width of his chest to lean on him, legs curled with his, your face nuzzling against his shoulder. “I’d wait a thousand years and more just for you.” You whisper, cheeks hot at the shyness of your confession.
Practically swooning and sweating with how speechless you left him, Kai just sputters out an awkward, little, “thank you” before practically deflating and silently whining when you start laughing at him, quickly turning such a heartfelt moment back to the lighthearted scene that the boys had left, who now return to tease at the lovey dovey-ness. You peel off of Kai, back to hand holding, back to listening to his story telling — aided by the others who make it all the more funnier and real — and let the feeling home overtake you, stealing one last glance at your boyfriend, your eyes and his melting and closing like honey.
Kai may be your sunshine, but unbeknownst to you, you’re his entire life, you’re his seasons, and he’d trade everything for you within a heartbeat.
author’s note: an old drabble i revamped; clearing out my drafts ^^
Cool winter rain falls and hits the roof of the apartment. Outside, people hurry to take shelter against the sudden torrents of droplets. It’s still cold, but now less arid, more muggy. Inside, however, it’s warm with a hint of chill, the outside seeping in, so much so you feel the need to wrap yourself in a blanket as you catch up on your favorite drama.
You took the day off, as did your boyfriend. You hadn’t done anything productive, not in the societal sense of things, but you managed to clean out your closet and prepare for the upcoming events you had scheduled. Kai had gone out to get lunch, his treat, he said.
You’re halfway through the episode when he returns, white carry out bags in hand. The shoulders of his denim jacket are speckled with water, and his hair has morphed from a contained mess to an uncontained one.
“Hi, handsome,” you call, a smile etched on your face as Kai begins to unpack the bags on this kitchen island.
“Handsome?” he asks, fake confusion on his face. “With this hair?”
You nod. “The most handsome.”
Kai’s laugh fills the room as he makes his way over to you. The two of you sit side by side on the couch, silently eating lunch while watching the drama unfold. The next episode’s just begun when you two finish, and Kai offers to take the dishes back to the kitchen.
When he reappears, it isn’t beside you, but rather directly above you, leaning over the back of the couch.
“Hi,” he calls gently, smile on his face and stars in his eyes. “I’ve missed you.”
“You walked to the kitchen like two minutes ago, Hyuka,” you remind, reaching up to boop his nose.
“Okay, then I’ve missed this,” he restates, leaning down to rest his head in the crook of your neck. His voice murmured against your skin. “Eating with you and spending time with you and just being with you, you know?”
“I know,” you reply, voice soft and relaxed. When Kai turns to look at you, you lean over and press a gentle kiss to his lips. You feel him sigh, then smile.
When you pull back, attention returning to the drama, Kai steps over the back of the couch to sit beside you once more. He pulls the blanket you had discarded before lunch back around the two of you, snuggling into your side.
“I missed that the most,” he says. “I missed your kisses most of all.”
You ruffle his hair with your hand, press a kiss against his temple. “You know you can always ask for more, right?”
Kai smiles, eyes filled with softness and love. He kisses the bottom of your chin. “I know.”
An: Fluff<33 honestly the only thing that inspired this was the fact that I have purple led’s on in my bedroom rn lmao, enjoy<3
2:28 am
It was late, you just got home from an after party being held by your company celebrating the new boss. However you didn’t drink, so you’re incredibly tired and just wanted to snuggle into Kai’s arms.
He was probably asleep by now, considering the fact that he had a schedule tomorrow morning for a photoshoot. But your thoughts were interrupted by someone walking on the floor from the bedroom to the living room where you were in making the floor creek.
“Hey honey” Kai’s voice sounded raspy and tired, you looked up to see him standing in shorts and a tshirt looking tired as ever, his face being slightly puffy and his eyes blinded by the lights.
“I thought you were asleep, don’t tell me you stayed up” you said, walking over to him and engulfing him in a warm hug and a peck on his warm lips.
“I was waiting for you, I only had a little nap until I heard the door open” he said, fidgeting with your hands. “Wanna go in and sleep?” You nodded tiredly and went in to brush your teeth and slip into night clothes and went directly into the comfy bed already feeling the sleepiness take you in.
“I love you” Kai said as he kissed your temple and snuggled you closer, whispering an I love you back to him, the only light visible being the purple led light from the big sign that you could see out of the window, so the room had a slight purple tint.
Kai loves you, and you love him, everything is perfect as long as you’re both by each others sides. As you both drifted off to sleep you couldn’t help but tangle your body’s together.

the sunlight was what woke you up. it was shining brightly on your face, warming it pleasantly (contrary to what was going on outside – snow, cold and ice).
you stretched your hands and you gasped when they met something. well, someone.
turning around you rose your head from kai’s shoulder and met his loving gaze.
“did i wake you up? sorry angel” you giggled. he started massaging his arm and you let out a sigh “sorry i fell asleep on you, you’re just a really good pillow. did you know that?”
kai chuckled and stretched his arms, wrapping them around you and pulling you back next to him with no effort.
“i realised, you know? it’s not the first time” kai hummed and his morning raspy voice caused a shiver to go down your spine “but don’t go…”
“i’m all yours. not going anywhere” you grinned and cupped his face, gently removing the messy hair that landed on his eyes. those beautiful, chocolate eyes that looked at you with a playful glint.
“will you give me a kiss though?” he asked and his much bigger hands rested on top of you, covering them.
“i can never say no to you” you smiled softly and leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss on his lips.
yeah, monday mornings with kai on your side didn’t seem so bad anymore.

the sting of rejection is not something that fades with time.
you’re no stranger to that fact of life, by any means. time and time again, you chase the one who holds your affections, all for your heart to be torn from your chest when all is said and done.
you’re not pretty enough, funny enough, smart enough for love to be on your side — at least, that is what the lack of interest from others thus far indicates to you.
you bring another scoop of ice cream from the carton in your lap to your lips, the sound of some shitty action movie streaming through the speakers of your laptop. it’s a ritual at this point: get rejected by whichever fellow college student who you are interested in, let the pathetic tears stream down your face on the way back to your apartment, crack open a tub of ice cream, and watch a movie that will keep your mind off of what happened (something that the traditional romcom could not do).
a knock at your front door pops your isolative bubble of self-pity. you flinch, but you don't bother to get up, too engrossed in the fight scene currently flitting across the screen in front of you. the hero sweeps the villain's legs from under him, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the dirt. you feel like the villain, and life, the hero. you don't particularly care that you sound overly dramatic.
whoever is at your door knocks again — louder and more insistent. your bloodshot eyes narrow as you emerge from your blanket cocoon, your sock-clad feet padding over to the door. the door creaks open to reveal your lanky best friend standing there with a grin on his face, a grin that fades as soon as he takes in your disheveled appearance.
“are you okay?” is the first thing that escapes his lips. when you shake your head, he pushes his way in, kicking the door shut behind him. his arms loop around your waist as your head settles against his warm chest. your sorrow thaws just a little. you missed this. you missed him. there’s a reason why you pursue other men — to avoid your blooming feelings for the boy now staring at you with concern shining in his widened eyes.
he guides you to your couch, sitting next to you so that you are turned to face each other. you stare down at your fingers in an attempt to avoid his gaze, but his fingers come up to grip your chin to force you to look at him.
“another guy?” he questions. this isn’t the first time that he has seen you in such a state. when you rasp out a soft ‘yeah,’ his lips briefly form a thin line. “who?”
you hesitate before responding. “jake.”
he stares at you for a moment, a frown overtaking his face. “he’s an ass. anyone would be lucky to date you.”
“you’re biased,” you breathe with a weak laugh. “i’m nothing special.”
“you’re special to me.”
the air surrounding you suddenly feels heavy, but you push those feelings rising up like bile in your throat down. “you are, too. we’re best friends, after all.”
“no, i don’t think you understand,” he starts, and you feel yourself grow tense as he moves closer. he grips your hands in his own, his fingers curling around your own like you’ve always wanted them to. “i get so angry whenever one of these worthless boys do not realize how amazing you are, how you’ll drop everything to help someone you love, how you are able to keep loving despite it all. i love the way you hide your face in my chest when we watch a scary move, the way you bring me comfort when i need it most.”
your breath stutters in your chest when he whispers his next words.
“i love you in a way that best friends shouldn’t.”
you stare and stare and stare, your brain going haywire with all of the thoughts swirling and colliding with each other. your very own best friend is confessing to you, serving his heart on a silver platter for you all for you to stare like a gaping fish at him. he looks at you hopefully, but that hope in him slowly dies the longer you do not speak.
and then you do the unthinkable.
you lean forward until your lips are pressed against his, a smile threatening to pull at your lips when he stiffens in pure shock before he relaxes into your touch. his fingers come to grip at your waist to pull you closer, giggles being pulled from your lips when he accidentally presses into the ticklish spot on your side. when you pull away, he’s glowing, his grin infectious as you mirror his expression.
“is it too early to assume that you feel the same?” he asks softly.
“not at all,” you reply, voice just a gentle. “you’re the one i’ve always waited for.”
