You have to stop looking at it as Aziraphale and Crowley's love story. Like the very best tragedies viewed for the first time, we didn't see it for what it was until it was too late. But I think this was always a tragedy for them because that was the cost of everything else existing with any sort of freedom.
They were never going to live happily ever after because their story is a tragedy. And their story had to be tragic because their choice to sacrifice themselves is the very thing that created a thousand other love stories that could have happy endings.
The astrophysicist and the bookshop assistant. Every single human AU we've ever written, read, imagined. That’s all real because of the tragedy.
More than that every single love story ever is possible because theirs wasn't. Without their love and their choice to lose it forever, no love would ever have existed at all.
When you view it through that lens, the readiness and bittersweetness that they walk straight into their tragic ending makes perfect sense and is an exceptional story of love for each other and for all of humanity. It’s heartbreakingly tragic. But also very beautiful.
