I have to speak my truth. I love Kpop Demon Hunters, but the more I think about it, the more I realise that I'm anti Jinu.

Firstly, we know from Jinu himself that he's the one who left his mother and sister behind while he was living it up in the palace. It's no surprise he ended up with Gwi-ma. And yeah, maybe he was willing to change, and I'm against the idea of eternal damnation (in most cases), but I feel like his chances of redemption was gone the moment he executed his plan.

Note that at the start of the film, Gwi-ma says,

"I know you, Jinu. In 400 years, you've never done a single thing that didn't serve yourself. What do you want?"

Let's also remember how Jinu helped Gwi-ma kill innocent people to rid himself of his own guilt, and was going to kill thousands more if it wasn't for Rumi. Jinu sacrificing himself wasn't a righteous act - it was an easy way out, if we're being fair. He wanted the voices gone, and he got it.

"But he didn't have a choice!" he did. Gwi-ma didn't force him to do anything. Yes, he was threatened with hearing the voices for eternity if he didn't continue to comply with the plan, but he's the one who came up with the plan, not Gwi-ma.

In addition, I can't get behind Rumi and Jinu. There was no chemistry, and the only thing they had in common was the fact that they're both demons. I didn't feel any connection between them besides that. Furthermore, he humiliated her on stage with her biggest source of shame, something she had hid her whole life... Jinu didn't deserve a happy ending after everything he did.

I think it's important to be friends with people who hate one of the things you like and it's important for you to be friends with people who like things you hate. nothing consequential, just people who go on and on about a book they said changed their life and you just think is dogshit.

people hating things you like shouldn't send your sense of self into upheaval. if someone hating a band you like feels tantamount to them hating you, I am sorry but you are making your identity equivalent to what you like and not who you are.

my very best friend and I have fundamentally different taste in books, often to the point of us being able to get a recommendation based on if the other hated it. and we're able to talk about the things we hate about it without it feeling like a personal attack on us as people.

but I fear we are in an age where we've all taken "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it all all" to such an extreme that anything besides rabid praise for something is not only shitting on the thing, but shitting on the people who like it. and that's foolish
