A little while ago I posted these, a bunch of out-of-context doodles for an AU that’s been in my head, and I figured I should probably give a base explanation :-] the moral of the story is to never trust anyone ever

I thought of this concept while looking at old febuwhump prompts so I just kinda… named it after that?? I didn’t want to think about it too hard. Introducing “Last Man Standing AU”

It’s a canon divergence AU that splits off during Vio and Green’s duel. Basically, the idea is that Vio failed at knocking Green out and instead had to settle for throwing his sword away and deeming him “too pitiful to fight.” Cause Vio failed at his plan, Green doesn’t know Vio is still on their side. He’s also not really seeing Vio as Vio either, more just this representation of evil who needs to be defeated in order to save Zelda. It’s mostly just instinct but Green is a hero and dealing with evil is basically his entire purpose

So. Vio sort of walks away from the encounter missing one of his eyes. Oops.

The aftermath is sort of the same as canon. Shadow teleports Vio away and Blue/Red grab Green and drag him somewhere safe. From there, everything is basically just a mess of complicated emotions that no one has the capacity to deal with. Literally no one has a good time in this. The ending would be around the same as canon (including shadow’s death sorry), it would just take a LOT longer to actually get there (IT GETS WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER)

Below is just some messy disjointed rambling about the links themselves

I have this belief that none of the links really handle being alone all too well, not necessarily because they don’t like but because they weren’t meant to function that way. They’re quarters of a whole, being separated from each other doesn’t end well. They’re like pack animals

This becomes a problem after the duel, because as much as I love Shadow, he would undoubtedly be a very shitty support system to someone who needs one in the best of circumstance. Vio’s going through just about the most traumatic experience of his entire life (losing his eye + the other parts of him thinking of him as a villain + they might also think he’s dead???? + LOSING HIS EYE) and Shadow… does not know how to handle it. Cause Vio didn’t “kill” Green, Shadow doesn’t think he’s capable enough to know about the dark mirror, so they’re just at a standstill. Vio keeps isolating himself cause he’s in the mental torment chamber and Shadow knows what’s wrong but has no idea how to fix it. He’s not exactly built for comfort.

Vio meanwhile is going through insanity for multiple reasons. He starts to develop this belief that everything that happened during the duel was solely his fault and that in order to make up for it, he needs to complete his original goal (finding Shadow/Vaati’s weakness and exploiting it). Anything less and the entire experience will have been for nothing.

They end up in the weird dynamic where Vio acts cold to Shadow (mainly cause of. you know) and Shadow becomes disinterested in him, only for Vio to realize and immediately pull some big gesture in order to reinstate their “friendship”. It’s just this cycle of Vio constantly reeling Shadow back in. This doesn’t mean their friendship is fully fake! As time goes on, Vio does slowly develop a real connection with him, something he quickly notices and immediately tries to stop. He doesn’t get very far in that though. At that point he’s too emotional exhausted to even try.

Green :) hurting Vio is definitely not something he’s proud of and he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about it since. There’s not a single part of him that doesn’t regret what he did but it was all instinct and he can’t take it back now. All they can really do is move forward. Or at least that’s what he tells himself

Both Red and Blue don’t function well without logic there to balance them out, and even if Green represents part of that, it’s not enough to stop them from having repeated breakdowns. This loops around in a circle as their outbursts cause Green even more distress, which makes him to shut down even further. His failure as a leader really takes a toll on him. Being a hero is his core, and attacking (potentially killing??) someone he considered an ally while they were already walking away??? That’s not something a hero would do. It’s really really not.

Green’s also similar to Vio cause he blames himself for the whole thing, but the main difference is that there’s nothing he can do to make it “worth it.” He’s just.. stuck knowing there’s nothing he can do to make it better.

Red and Blue actually end up bonding a lot! Which is sweet. Because of Plot Reasons that I’ll eventually get around to explaining, Red and Blue and up separate from Green. At first, they don’t have a set goal. More just wandering around trying to do good. They’re probably the most wholesome part of the entire AU

Blue’s anger issues get so much worse after the duel. Watching Green and Vio fight from the sidelines was probably one of the worst moments of his life. He’s mad at everyone; Vio for turning evil, Green for hurting Vio, Red for being useless, himself for not doing anything. Sort of angriest dog in the world type beat. He tries to avoid taking it out on Green and Red cause he’s not a complete asshole, but it’s harder than it looks. He does end up yelling at them a few times, Green especially.

I really like the headcanon of Blue being something of a healer, so that’s in here :-] it happens because Blue is sick of being unable to do anything. If he can’t fight, then he can make sure the others can take his place. It’s certainly not perfect but it settles some of the itches in his brain

Red is still his optimistic self but it’s way more of an act than it was before. He wholeheartedly believes that everything will eventually turn out okay, and since it’s apparent that no one else believes that, he pushes it to the max. Constantly trying to reassure the others, trying to lighten the mood, stuff like that. He inadvertently comes off as being really oblivious to reality when that isn’t actually the case. He knows that what he’s saying isn’t realistic but no one else is even trying so he has to. What’s the point of any of this if Link isn’t the end goal? They all need something to look forward to

After having dealt with Blue (and Green) for far longer than necessary, Red is actually the one to propose going back to death mountain to see if they can recuse Vio, whether he wants it or not. Green isnt there for Reasons so Red only gets to share this plan with Blue, who makes it very clear that he thinks it’s a horrible idea. Red however doesn’t listen to him and drags him along to death mountain because even if they can only find his corpse, they’re going to get Vio back. Nothing else matters, only Vio. Introducing the rescue team (name pending) :-]

So there’s a quick overview! I’ve had this in my head on and off for like a year and a half at this point and like. I don’t want it there anymore. It needs to be out in the world thank you for listening goodbye
