How far ahead do you plan your stories when you’re writing them? Do you come up with them as you go? Or add to the story a little but ahead, or way ahead or something?
Depends on the story! The Good Boy, Memoirs, and A Little Honey have everything planned out. Beginning, middle, and ending. Making a Monster and Bedside Manners have beginnings and endings, but I'm filling in the middle as I go. I try to plan at least 10 chapters ahead of time so that I don't get stuck. I don't always stick to it, but I still get to the destination I need.
It's always important to have an ending to your story so you can make sure that if you do get stuck that you can pivot to pushing yourself closer to that ending by coming up with something that helps you toward that goal.
I know exactly where MaM and BMaG are going to go and what "big" moments are going to happen throughout, but everything else I do fill in a bit later. This is due to their size. Those two are probably going to be my very big stories since neither are close to finishing.
Hope this helps!
