Hot take—Opinions on AI shouldn’t be all or nothing, and to be totally against it is a privileged stance to take.
I’m sorry you have the money for decent health insurance, or your parents do, but hell yes some people are using AI to figure out their health issues or to support their mental health. I’m sorry your brain may work right and you don’t need any editing when you write literally anything, or you have the clientele/income for expensive editors (emails, grocery lists, presentations, poetry, stories). I’m sorry you can come up with recipes rather than eat the same damn safe meal every day. I’m glad you can afford a personal assistant who helps you get organized each morning and sets goals for you to give you even a step up against an oppressive culture that gets poorer by the moment.
(Hint, I’m not actually sorry.)
Just make sure you turn off alllll your AI—your Alexa, your Siri, your rerouting maps, your scheduled timers, your Grammerly or Word editors, your “for you” lists on literally every social media and streaming service, your predictive text, etc etc etc.
AI has been around for decades, much longer than many realize. Only you will accept the ones you need. Even the early generative ones, like Google Translate or the predictive text or autocomplete you like on your phone that messes up your messages all the time.
No, the issue isn’t all or nothing, and I would argue it’s not even with technology advancements.
It’s with ethics.
We have a problem with the ethics humans use, who use technology.
One can use generative AI and not use stolen intellectual property. You can even focus on the stolen jobs, but they are just distracting you from the real ethical issue—we live in societies where the rich become richer and the cost of living has gone far beyond unethical, with people dying from lack of food, healthcare, shelter, education, etc etc etc.
People get caught up in the wrong arguments. You can avoid all AI because you are protesting the unethical use of intellectual property, or you can recognize that this kind of argument (slippery slope fallacy) is no different than prohibition was. Alcohol was not the problem. Dancing was not the problem. Sex is not the problem. Advancement is not the problem. Don’t be a boomer.
Unethical people and societies are the problem.
